Hey gang, it's once again time for me to read too deeply into the shit Izaya says.

So the way Izaya introduces Drrr SH vol 3 is…. Interesting. I actually really do enjoy how this introduction foreshadows the events of this volume and I know Narita didn't intend for this to be twisted into Shizaya but like…

Whenever Izaya talks about love and hate I always end up reading into it because what the fuck else am I going to do? Be normal about a piece of media? Nah.

“Some people can't help but detest humanity, and others say they have no interest. Funny thing about that is–both hatred and indifference are types of fanaticism.”

So right there, Izaya admits that hatred basically still equates to being passionate or heated about something. Which is funny considering how often he mentions he hates Shizuo. So he's saying he could be considered a Shizuo fanatic by that logic which honestly just feels so correct.

“In Japanese, the word fanaticism is written with the kanji for heat and madness. Do you see where I'm going with this?

To go mad over heat itself. To go mad when heat is applied.

And for one's own heat to go mad. All these interpretations are valid.

The heat one feels for humanity going out of control–that's me. Overheating and falling in love with humanity itself.”

Let's be real, Shizuo is humanity out of control. And of course the easy joke here is that Izaya finds that hot.

But then he starts talking about changing how one feels about something:

“It's much harder than you'd think for your emotions to be perpetually changing–did you know that?

Let's say you've hated a type of food since you were a child. If someone told you to simply get over it and change your opinion, it wouldn't be that easy, would it?”

So in the Izaya novels, he basically admits he lost to Shizuo because he failed to see the human side of him. It's almost like Izaya's opinion on Shizuo might be beginning to change. Like everyone close to Shizuo is telling him “get over it and change your opinion”. And he might even want to change that opinion at this point but as he explains here, it's very difficult to change those things quickly.

And then he devolves into his typical “I love humans” stuff, but with a bit of extra flare.

“I love humanity. Yes, I love it deeply.

I've been saying that for years, which is why I think humanity should be allowed to love me, too.

Mutual love with all humanity–what a wonderful thing.

It could be love that gently envelopes me.

It could be love that virulently insults me.

It could even be love that ignores me.

Do you really think love doesn't have a shape? Really?

Love has a shape; it's just always changing.

I want to prove that to everyone.”

Good Lord, this man just needs to be loved. SOMEONE LOVE HIM. HE'S SO FUCKING THIRSTY.

The line “love has a shape; it's just always changing” and then the examples that follow… it's not a stretch to say Izaya would consider even Shizuo fighting him as a form of love. After all, hatred is fanaticism, right Izaya? Do you see your fights with Shizuo as a way of “making love”?

“It's a good thing to be fanatical toward each other. Very good. Even if the law and society are against it, I will accept you. So don't worry–Go wild out there.

Love others; hate others; be perfectly indifferent.

Each of those choices is equal, and each has great value.”

“EVEN IF THE LAW AND SOCIETY ARE AGAINST IT”?????? Izaya, that's fucking GAY.
