I want to take a second to talk about murder.

I’ve read a few things about a tumblr member named @flipping-all-the-tables who committed a school stabbing recently and injured 9 people. Apparently this person has posted this type of stuff since January, talking about killing others.

Some tumblr bloggers are pretty pissed, and they’re lashing out at true crime blogs for allegedly normalizing and romanticizing murder because sometimes there are posts saying “killers are people just like us.”

1. Killers ARE people just like us.

But this doesn’t excuse their actions. Mental illness and childhood trauma are not reasons to hurt others. They can explain the DESIRE to do so, but saying that

• “[insert name here] was a victim of abuse, so OF COURSE he/she ended up lashing out,” or

• “[insert name here] was a really lonely and sad person”

doesn’t give them the right to hurt others. This type of behavior reinforces the stereotype of mentally ill people being violent, which is untrue for the most part.

2. Killing is not normal.

I will concede, and concur, that the media hypes up school shooters to a celebrity level, and it’s sickening. This isn’t the zombie apocalypse, so unless your survival is threatened, killing people is not an option.

Killing is not normal. If someone angers you, draw them on paper and violate the picture. Write something. Distract yourself. If you really, really, really wanna hurt someone,…this is going to sound really callous, and it is…turn the anger inward and hurt yourself. Doing yourself in will cause a hell of a lot less damage than killing others and hurting THEIR families.

3. True crime blogs aren’t to blame.

True crime blogs are there to inform, not to encourage. I think a lot of people simply find these killers’ psychology intriguing. A small group of people do admire and romanticize killers, but as long as they aren’t harming others, they have a right to feel that way.

I read a lot of true crime stuff like @bundyspooks’s blog. So do other people. Other people devour horror novels and gory movies and—strangely—never commit a single heinous crime. Imagine that! It’s almost like we can separate fantasy and reality!

In the end, committing a violent act is the perpetrator’s choice. @congenitaldisease @a-2394949
