⚔️: Now isn't the tim- 🪕: AAAAAH SHUT UP SHUT UP
The absolute joy of having a theater all to yourselves so you can react however you want to a movie. Went with three friends to go see Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves in theaters yesterday, and it was a grand time. The friend that doesn't typically enjoy fantasy loved it, other friends loved it, I loved it. We were laughing and clapping and yelling. I had more context than them from tumblr, and waiting for some scenes to happen to see their reactions was fun. I can only echo all the good sentiments I've heard about it. Edgin and Holga's platonic relationship and co-parenting gave me life. It was fun to see the shapeshifting sequences come to life on screen, and I liked the practical effects of the non-human characters. And Edgin's continuing belief in Simon was lovely. Also the fact that it was not bloody. It could have been so bloody, but they decided not to do that and I thank them for it because I am not great with the level of blood and gore in most fantasy media put out these days. Overall, ten out of ten movie, and I was glad I went to see it.
10/10 would watch again
So I just watched the D&D, and auhdgdgsj best thing I’ve ever watched.
Sorta but not really spoilers. I saw the daughter’s necklace and it’s literally the emerald necklace from Skyrim??? Also there was a portal gun. Also Hulga’s husband was literally shrunken in photoshop like it’s so jarring.
Photos for ref

I couldn’t find find any photos of Helga’s husband :(
I am happy to report that the D&D movie is:
1. Fun
2. Funny
3. Well-written, with an actual *plot*
4. Well-acted
5. Pretty; both the sets and CGI are believable, if not 100% realistic, which works fine with the tone of the movie
6. Clearly created by people who actually enjoy the genre
listen I expected literally Nothing from the D&D movie okay, like I can't make it clear enough that I expected the most soulless money grab with a good cgi budget imaginable, I went in having already gone through every stage of grief and landed on acceptance and LISTEN
I fucking CRIED during this dumb RPG movie. it wasn't just "not terrible" it was objectively good with a clever plot and compelling characters and sincere emotional beats. this movie loves D&D so fucking much and it NAILS the "a bunch of goobers try to be cool and accidentally discover The Power Of Friendship And Also Great Violence" classic D&D party vibe. their barbarian's last name is fucking Kilgore and my entire family cried in the theater.
I hope they make twelve of these motherfuckers.

Yes, AND! :D
I honestly think that these characters do even more than give the Paladin a good guy moment...
It's not just that the camera hangs on the happy reunion for a few beats longer than another director normally would (which emphasizes that this rescue MATTERS)...
Look at how the women next to the Tabaxi react to the rescue.
And how Jarnathan's coworkers react to him being hijacked.
This movie is showing that these aren't just curiosities or monsters who happen to be hanging around, like decorations for the story.
These folks are fully accepted parts of their respective communities.
There are people who CARE whether the Tabaxi is saved -- to the point of the women being familiar enough with the Tabaxi mother to touch and comfort the mother and child, and to react in joy and wonder in a way that is more than mere appreciative bystandership.
Coworkers who care about Jarnathan's dignity and safety enough to -- not just react in shock and worry at his distress -- but to brick up their only window in a dark, cold, high room; so as to prevent anyone from trying to take advantage of Jarnathan in that way ever again.
Each of these species -- and presumably every other species in the movie -- are fully accepted as sentient beings, and live their lives alongside others in a harmonious and perfectly normalized way.
It brings the world of the movie very vividly to life!
I ADORE IT SO MUCH!!! ✨💖🎊🥳🥳🥳🎊💖✨

man i love how quickly you get a sense for what emily's relationship with her mother is like. when she sees her she literally calls out "mother" rather than a more informal title and then the three expressions she goes through:

she goes from shock (what is my mother doing here?) to pleasant surprise (my mother is here!) to (at least to me, the last one is a little harder to read) disappointment (oh...she's probably here because she needs something) here's a still image of that last one since it's a little hard to catch in my shitty gif:

(also: shoutout to paget brewster for cycling through three expressions in a single second and communicating so much so quickly. love that)
xenk: okay, but what if we went to dinner not as friends this time?
edgin: AS ENEMIES?!
xenk:
xenk: when i woke up this morning, i meditated, did yoga, drank green tea, and went for a 30 minute walk
edgin: when i woke up, i spent an hour just waking up
To all my lovely nerds who wish Edgin and Xenk had kissed. Let me recommend a book:
Reforged by Seth Haddon.
Thank me later.

Here wait... I put both my fanarts of them on the same canvas. Just because.. just to see...
