Growing beyond you;

You know the strangest thing about liking characters in a way that emulates love as a minor is growing beyond them. From loving every moment you spent with them in your head to slowly realising that these characters that once brought you comfort are now too far behind you, that comfort slowly turning into a nagging feeling as you quickly start leaving that point in your life is painful in a way that is hard to describe.

Perhaps it is not the characters themselves that pains me to leave behind, but, maybe it's the active bargaining that I am changing as a person and letting them go would mean letting go of who I was back then and having to face change. Whatever it may be, though, I feel loss whenever I think of them and of the stories and fics I read or wrote, especially the comfort when I was at my lowest. It almost feels like losing a love in a much smaller way but losing them nonetheless.

I wonder if I am the only one who thinks back to their memories of them where my eyes were stained red with tears and my chest tight, where the only comfort was the idea that someone has their arm around me telling me that everything was going to be okay, they kiss the top of my head and hold me a bit tighter as a light squeeze. I look back on them with nostalgia as a person I once knew, and when I look back upon them in their respective medias, I feel the same way I'd imagine someone would feel to gaze upon a childhood lover.

Maybe I just need to go touch grass 😔.
