“Love was unfair to us, wasn’t it?”

“God, Hobi, go to bed,” you groan, running your hand down your face and rubbing away your tired eyes. “It’s late. Now is not the time for this.”

“But we could have made it work, right? If I wasn’t such a fuck up we would have been good, huh?”

Through the receiver you can hear glass clinking against his countertop along with his slurred words.

“You’re drunk right now,” you bluntly state, pushing yourself up in bed.

He releases a garbled response which you can only take as a yes. “I guess that’s another one of my many, many flaws you just couldn’t love anymore,” he says bitterly. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry I was never good enough and I was never the man you wanted me to be.”

You can hear him sniffle through the line, struggling not to bawl like he did the last time he drunk dialed you.

“Hey,” you stop him from trying to put himself down. “It wasn’t all your fault, okay? You’re right, love was unfair and things just didn’t work out the way we wanted to, but don’t blame yourself for everything.”

“God, I wish you were here. I just want to hold you in my arms again,” he sighs, thinking of simpler times when both of you thought that your love would last.

You glance at the photo sitting on your nightstand of the two of you, smiling and looking so carefree. That was before, and this is reality. “Yeah, me too.”
