So far there have been two times in your life where you have gotten the wind knocked out of you. The first was when you saw your favourite band in concert for the first time ever. The second is when you see Jeon Jeongguk across the room at your best friend’s party.

Standing in the corner of the room, you scan the crowd that has filled the house. As you continue your examination, your eyes catch a stranger across the room. He’s got a beer in one hand, and with the other, he is running a hand through his hair. To say you feel unsteady on your feet and can’t breathe would be an understatement. Immediately mesmerized by his smile, you find it hard to take your eyes off him. He catches your gaze across the room, and you immediately lower your eyes. Fidgeting with your phone, you leave from the crowded living room and make an escape for the front yard of Mina’s house, which is the only quiet place.

The night is silent, save for the sounds of crickets chirping into the distance somewhere. You amble quietly towards the tree in the yard, which is yours and Mina’s favourite spot. Dusting off the roots that protrude from the ground, you sit down and rest your head against the bark.

“I thought I saw someone heading in this direction” the nameless stranger from before makes an appearance, almost making you lose your balance even though you are sitting.

“Hi” you tuck a strand of hair behind your ear

“What are you doing out here leaving that awesome party?” he chuckles as he sits next to you, drawing his knees to his chest.

After the boy in your arms had finally calmed down, quiet sniffles the only sound coming from him as you kept telling him how much he meant to you, how deeply adored he was by you, you managed to get him back to the lab room.

Well in the room, you raised the hospital bed to as much as an upright position as you could. Jeongguk went to change into dry clothes and then came back to join you on the bed, leaning his head against your chest.

“You need moon water” you say, going to hand the slim black-haired boy beside you the jar of clear liquid you had kept outside overnight to absorb the energy of the full moon. Yoongi, who had been in the middle of burning herbs to add to the spell dismisses you with a flick of his hand.

“I already added rose water to the mixture.”

“You added rose water— to a protection spell?” You questioned. Yoongi shrugs, adding the burned herbs to a mortar and pestle to grind into ashes and completely ignoring you in the process. Annoyed, you wave your hand at the mortar and pestle sending it skidding across to the other end of the table, and he turns to you, equally as annoyed.

“What?”

“Are you dumb?”

On Monday evening, D-1, it was time to say goodbye, your plane rising earlier than the sun the morning after. Sure, you’d only be gone four days, but when you’d get back, you’d only have a few days left before Jeongguk would be released. 

Saying goodbye to the others had been easy, just a quick ‘bye, see you in a few days,’ and getting a ‘bye, have a safe flight’ in return when they left for the day. But parting from Jeongguk would be different, a practice run for when you’d have to do it for real.

Your footsteps crunch along the ground as you make your way back to the tower you’ve called your home for the past decade. Leaves crackle under the soles of your sandals, the sound entwining with the gentle rustle of the trees as the soothing cacophony of sounds eases your soul. A soft wind flitters past, the light gale wisping through your hair, causing a few strands to dance in the squall. It shouldn’t take you long to reach home - you’d only been out foraging and hunting for supper. A victorious smile creeping onto your face, your eyes glance down at the wicker basket nestled next to your hip, the handle resting in the crook of your elbow.

An array of mixed berries, fruits and vegetables sit in the basket, nestled next to the cloth-covered slab of boar meat - and a few different herbs stalks taking up the rest of the space. Your grin widens as you silently praise yourself over your success. The boar meat especially gets you excited - it’s Hoseok’s favourite. Once again, you internally cheer, as you imagine the inevitable look of excitement on your dragon’s face when you tell him about your catch. Boar meat was rare to come by - well, somewhat rare - considering it was a fool’s folly to hunt for one without someone to accompany you. However, today, you’d managed to stumble across an injured one and tried your luck - and as it turned out, your luck had won out. Though, you do chalk most of it down to Seokjin’s archery training. The elf had tried his hardest to impart onto you some of his skill; and apparently, he’d been successful, since you’d managed to skewer the boar with one, well placed shot to the head, consequently putting it out of its misery.

You continue your way back home, practically moving on muscle memory alone - you’d walked this same path more times than you could count - the trek ingrained into the soles of your feet. The dense thicket of trees, while almost identical to each other, doesn’t confuse you as they used to and you find yourself easily navigating through the forest. It doesn’t take you long to reach home, and moments later, you approach the giant tower nestled within the dense canopy of the enchanted forest.
