Oh fun! Thank you! Family first, then nightmares:

Farah doesn’t speak to her family often, but she does love them. (And contrary to popular belief amongst her students, she does have a family.) She has two pain-in-the-arse sisters and has spent 16+ years trying to fix the damage that was done to their relationships thanks to Rosalind’s meddling. Rosalind had tried to teach her that family were a distraction, a liability, a weakness, and for a while, Farah had believed it. By the time she realised it was wrong, she was willing to keep the distance between them in order to keep her family safe.

She’s not been alone, though. Far from it. Saul, Ben, Rose and - for a while - Andreas became her family. Even when she hadn’t wanted them to. How could she push them away, though, when she was partnered with Saul, suitemates with Rose, and on the same team with adorably sweet Ben. (Andreas could be charming, too, but she’d always been a little wary of him. He was charming but cocky with it, whereas Saul was more endearingly oblivious to his appeal.)

When the kids came along, first Sam and then Sky, then Terra, she found herself being drawn into the new family they made. She was wary of Sam and Sky at first, having never been around baby boys, but they both worked their way into her affections despite her best efforts. When Terra was born, though, she reminded Farah of her youngest sister, and brought back bittersweet memories. After Rose died, she helped Ben look after his two, then stepped up to help Saul with Sky when the little boy was orphaned.

Her family, both biological and adopted, feature heavily in her nightmares. She worries she won’t be able to protect them from the danger she senses is coming, worries that if there’s another war she’ll lose more people she cares about.

She has nightmares about Rosalind coming back, about her wanting revenge for what Farah did. She knows her former mentor will want to see her suffer and has spent 16 years honing her powers so she’ll be able to defend her loved ones and herself from the woman she once aspired to be.

Sometimes, she has nightmares that, in trying to be strong enough to take on Rosalind, she turns into her instead. She dreams about the satisfied, smug, almost proud smirk on Rosalind’s face as she’s praised for becoming the weapon, the monster, Rosalind always wanted her to be.

After, when the dust settles again, she dreams about dirt and being unable to breathe. She dreams about trying to claw her way to freedom, her magic failing her, the smell and weight and feel of the soil pressing down on her.

On those nights, she’s gently shaken awake, cocooned by familiar arms and familiar feelings, and remembers it’s ok, she can finally breathe again.
