It’s mentioned off hand by Mina when she’s looking for Lucy in the house and notices the front door is open. ‘The people of the house are good about locking up when they leave’ or something to that effect. ‘People of the house’ is a term that pops up in this era to describe servants a lot. So there are servants in witby, but they’re at home asleep when Lucy sleepwalks.
I don’t even think there’s any out of sight out of mind thing with mina feeling isolated and lonely but the servants are right there. I don’t think she knows these people AT ALL. They don’t stay at the house so the probably live in Witby and aren’t directly employed by Mrs. Westenra.
Can you imagine how awkward it would be if some random lady renting out the house you work at just started venting about how her fiancé was supposed to be back from a business trip almost a month ago but instead has gone completely radio silent and that both the people she’s staying at the house with have different health problems that they’re keeping secret from eachother and she’s caught in the middle of the two of them trying to pretend that everything’s fine while you’re just trying to dust a fireplace mantle or something like the Victorian equivalent of that guy in the drive through just trying to give someone their food
Genuine question - does anyone have any theories about where the servants are in Whitby?
I mean, is this just an "I'm so alone" (servant in the room tending the fire goes unmentioned) type ignoring the lower class and treating them as if they're invisible? That doesn't seem to fully jive with the events of today's entry, where Mina searched the house and would surely have asked a maid or someone if they were there (then again, it was 3am). They also are mentioned in other places in the novel so it's not like they are always invisible. I also feel like they might have gotten caught sneaking home at dawn if there were servants getting ready for the day, but it isn't mentioned. And maybe there's something with Mina being put in sole charge of keeping Lucy in at night as well...
But I can't believe Mrs. Westenra and Lucy are staying here for so long with no servants at all. So maybe only a few who don't live in the main apartment (?) or something and thus missed tonight's events?
This really funny thing happened at my church where the pastor just casually called out this homophobic couple in the middle of his sermon.
For context: A Gay man who'd been attending for years wanted to become a church elder, and this couple was of the opinion that Gay people should only be allowed into churches to be 'fixed'. They’d been cordial to him and his boyfriend for years, but him wanting to run for the position while still “choosing” to be gay crossed a line for them.
These two started to try and rally people to their side in the congregation, and didn’t seem to be getting the hint that it was literally only them who cared about this. Eventually the pastor just had enough and gave this whole sermon on the section of the bible that the couple kept citing as being proof that “being gay wasn’t christian”. He pointed out that it also listed “re-marrying when your spouse was still alive” as something christians weren’t supposed to do, and said something to the effect of “if go around telling people to abide by this section you should be following ALL of it.”
Both of the homophobes had divorced their previous spouses and married each-other.
They got up, left, and never came back.
Best fucking sermon ever.
I full understand that it is not appropriate as response to talking about the various roles of christianity in colonialism and Christofascism,
However as its own thing, I think its an interesting subject how the Bible is supposed to be the fundamental source of Christian doctrine, BUT most of the "traditional values" of christian conservatives and ideas that are powerfully associated with christianity...just Are Not In There, or are only mentioned as brief, isolated side notes amidst much longer and more detailed passages discussing something different
Whereas many ideas that are emphasized HUGELY in the Bible are just totally and completely ignored by these rightwing political folks
Much of Christianity is not actually based on the Bible, but instead on a bunch of traditions and later writers, but protestants have problems with admitting that.
And as someone who was raised very "sola scriptura" i don't even get why church tradition matters for anyone. Who cares what Augustine thought about abortion. He was literally just a guy
The Joker movie is a Batman themed creepy pasta written by an edgy 15 year old who read one psychology book and said “I can do that better”.
I hate hate HATE all those 2edgy 4me theories about kids shows. Like Angelica dreaming up the rugrats, or the ed, edd, and eddy children being ghosts, or literally anything that takes a lighthearted and fun kids show and has to turn it into some tragic take of rape or murder or misinformed mental illness. So you know what? From now on I’m gonna do the exact opposite. Every cool grim-dark show is now because of a bunch of children. To get us started: Game of Thrones: A middle-school DnD campaign with the most angry, vindictive DM who has promised to kill everyone’s player characters (and their family) by the end.
THIS. FUCKING THIS. This is how I’ve felt about people’s response to RWBY for YEARS.
RWBY started as an amateur project made by a team who had never done anything like it before (Monty's previous animations had been fight scenes for the sake of fight scenes with nothing resembling a plot, and using characters from pre-existing properties. RT's previous output had primarily been comedy machinima, so primarily focus was on the comedic character writing because character and location design were all provided by the medium they were already working within), and only grew in quality and scope as time went on
detractors have always been entitled whiners who never treated it fairly, whether it be over the initial awkward animation (which was because it had a very limited budget, and, again, amateur production), voice acting (amateur production), that there was voice acting at all and it wasn't just non-stop contextless fight scenes (which would've gotten unbelievably dull both to watch and to make - and these people clearly ignored the small narrative and character moments that Monty had included in his previous work), that it wasn't full of adult humour and a comedy show like every other RT property (god forbid creatives branch out) and that it was intruding on anime space by evoking an anime artstyle but not being 'good' (elitist "thing: japan" weebs who think they're the arbitrators of what is and isn't anime and treat their subjective opinions as fact) - who all congealed together into a homogenous mass of obnoxious complaining after Monty died because they could use his absence as a cudgel to attack the show and the team over any aspect of it they didn't like (while pretending like they weren't the ones pissing and moaning like the show was holding them hostage through the first two volumes)
RWBY has always been the punching bag because people abjectly refuse to meet it where it's coming from (an amateur production) and get shirty when it doesn't meet their expectations of what it was going to be (when those expectations weren't the show's fault and weren't ever promised) and they've spent a fucking decade responding to the mere mention of it with bizarrely intense vitriol even when being apparently reasonable on all other topics
