BAN KOSA !!!

BAN KOSA !!!

I wanted to bring peoples attention to this since NO ONE has been talking about it.

In just 4 days, Congress will vote on a crucial bill known as KOSA, which poses a serious threat to the anime and manga community in the United States. Alongside the EARN IT act, this legislation has the potential to result in a complete ban on anime, manga, fanfics, and any mature content due to the vague classification of "gore and violence."

While the bill is being presented as a measure to protect minors, it is essential to understand that its implications go far beyond that. In reality, KOSA could lead to a blanket ban for all individuals, regardless of age. The bill claims to offer a way for adults to access content by confirming their age, but upon closer examination, it becomes evident that adult viewers will be at risk of having the content flagged and taken down.

This is an alarming development that requires immediate attention and action from the anime community. We cannot allow this bill to pass unnoticed, as it will undoubtedly have severe consequences for the freedom of expression and creativity within our community.

To make a difference, we urge you to take action and voice your opposition to KOSA. You can start by visiting the link provided: https://www.badinternetbills.com/. This website allows you to email your state representatives directly. Moreover, if you provide your phone number, you will receive a call that will conveniently connect you to all your representatives' offices. They will provide you with a script to read from, making it easy for you to express your concerns effectively.

It is crucial that we all unite and stand up against this threat. Last year, we narrowly escaped the passage of this bill, but it seems that Congress is making another attempt this year. By speaking up and making our voices heard, we can ensure that our rights to enjoy anime, manga, and creative works are protected.

PLEASE VOTE ON IT, it will take two seconds and it'll help. Thank you ya'll <3

If you can't vote, likes, reblogs, shares, ALL ARE APPRECIATED

CGI animators should unionize next. normally, their jobs would be too precarious to strike, since studios would replace them without a second thought, but if it's part of this larger general film strike, they might finally have meaningful power to better their working conditions

⚠️Hey, so this may be very (VERY) urgent:⚠️

So, I don’t normally do this, but something urgent came up, and I really need y’all to read this. There’s a TL;DR at the bottom of this post, but I strongly advise reading this post all the way through to gain more context on the situation at hand.

I don’t know all the details, but there’s this act floating around in the US called the “Kid’s Online Safety Act” - or KOSA , if you will. Here’s a description of it:

KOSA claims to make kids safer, but it’s really a dangerous censorship bill that would give the government unprecedented control over the internet. This would put youth in danger by preventing them from accessing potentially life-saving resources. Lawmakers concerned about online safety should reject KOSA and instead work to protect all internet users from abusive tech companies by passing a Federal data privacy law.
KOSA uses two methods to “protect” kids, and both of them are awful. First, KOSA would pressure platforms to install filters that would wipe the net of anything deemed “inappropriate” for minors. This = instructing platforms to censor, plain and simple. Places that already use content filters have restricted important information about suicide prevention and LGBTQ+ support groups, and KOSA would spread this kind of censorship to every corner of the internet. It’s no surprise that anti-rights zealots are excited about KOSA: it would let them shut down websites that cover topics like race, gender, and sexuality.

In summary, this law, if put in place, would aim to wipe out sites that could provide youth with life-saving resources, or even mention topics related to the LGBTQIA+ community and suicide prevention.

Now, obviously this is only a thing in America, so you’d think it wouldn’t affect the rest of the world, right?

Well, not exactly.

So you know how fandom sites such as Tumblr, AO3 and Wattpad provide an escape for many people across the world who are going through hard times (to put it simply)? I don’t mean to scare anyone, but if this law passes, these sites may be negatively affected globally.

Here’s a TikTok I found by a creator known as omarsbigsister that explains it better. It’s mainly about AO3 but Tumblr and Wattpad are mentioned too:

We all know why fandom is so important. Many people, as I’ve mentioned, use sites such as the ones previously listed to escape the troubles of their everyday life. In addition, fanfiction sites in particular provide creative outlets for writers across the globe. This law could possibly destroy this form of escapism and a creative outlet.

I’ve linked a link tree found in the above TikTok creator’s link tree at the bottom of this post. Please sign them regardless of where you’re from.

Also, y’all know I usually don’t ask for clicks, but interacting with this post in some way or even making a post of your own like this to spread the word would also be of great help!

We have to stop KOSA from being passed. The lives of America’s youth and future of fandom depend on it.

Thanks in advance!

- hpnewgen

TL;DR: KOSA is putting the lives of American youth and the future of fandom as a whole at risk and we need to act now.

🚨🚨updates🚨🚨on the other non-KOSA bills that gut encryption (Cooper-Davis, Stop CSAM, Earn IT, etc):

The Senate rn is working on passing the NDAA. This is a must pass bill. Every senator is trying to push through their amendments to the NDAA. These amendments get brought to the floor and added on a majority vote. So far, Cooper-Davis is being planned on being added. IDK what day. The Stop CSAM and Earn It might also be added but either way, all 3 are copy cats of each other in that;

a) they gut encryption

b) they gut parts of Section 230, the one thing that allows anyone to post online and birthed social media

c) they create an unelected commission with some already established govt body (DOJ, FTC, etc) that will include people from NCOSE or other conservative groups who will decide what is and isn't lawful to say

d) lead to mass censorship and surveillance because of the above

WHAT TO DO NEXT

1) Drive as many calls and emails to as many senators as possible. Yes still to Cantwell and Schumer but to your own senators as well and any you think would be influential (i.e., Padilla in Earn It, etc). Drive as many as you can, use all your emails, call everyday about these bills to end encryption.

2) Post on social media everywhere about this and about We are seriously counting on you.

On KOSA:

Continue to drive calls to Cantwell and Schumer opposing it and thank them for standing firm against bad bills that will only hurt more than help. Emphasize you are a member of Gen Z/Millenial and grew up on the internet and don't want this.

We need to make sure Cooper-Davis and the others are not added. Time is essential and we have so very little of it. Please please please do this. These bills are 1000x more dangerous than KOSA could be.
