A Gender Politics Jamboree: Firefly and “Our Mrs. Reynolds”

So, OK, I see this “Joss Whedon–Feminist Or Misogynist?” conversation go round occasionally on my tumblr. No doubt this is an old debate to which I, as someone who has only ever seen one season of Buffy, The Vampire Slayer, have little new to contribute. Nevertheless, every time I see it pop up, I think to myself, “Self, are you ever going to write up that thing you were going to write up about how fascinating and yet ultimately fucked-up Firefly’s gender politics are?”

And tonight, I replied, “Self, I have some serious procrastinating to do, so let’s find a screencap of “Our Mrs. Reynolds” and let’s do this thing.”
