Jason was already shaking his head before Leslie had finished speaking. “They won’t work anyway, don’t you think I’ve tried!?” And that admittance held weight. Because Leslie knew how much he hated painkillers, and taking them. She knew the path it led Jason’s mother on, and the pain it had caused.

The fact that he had resorted to them…

But Jason did relent on offering her his arm. Actively drinking required more energy than he had right now, and he was fully aware that he needed fluids to prevent him from starting to feel even worse. “Do what you gotta, doc. Just no fucking painkillers…”

“Alright, okay.” She soothed, realising she wasn’t going to be able to suggest anything else that would work right now. Leslie hadn’t been sure if he would have tried, given how difficult the idea of taking them was for him, but the confession was telling to how bad the pain truly was. “No painkillers.”

She did, however, make quick work of fetching her bag from the living room and hooking Jason up with some fluids, glad she had the foresight to bring everything she needed. Given the pain he was in and Jason’s particular dislike for needles, she did her best to make it as bearable as she could, touching him as little as possible.

“You should let her in.” Leslie mused as she worked over him, going back to their previous subject partly to distract him but also because she wasn’t content to just drop the subject. “You deserve to be happy, Jason.”

Jason shrugged. Not all of his teachers liked him - some downright disliked him, always convinced he was up to no good. But there were teachers who seemed elated with his work and assignments. So it was alright, Jason could work with that.

But her college comment threw him off. “You’re talking to Dick?” Jason blurted it out before he could stop himself. Why was she still talking to Dick? He’d been Robin, he was Nightwing now, surely he didn’t need a green light from a therapist to do his job?! Did Bruce expect him to keep talking to her too!?

Leslie was careful not to react to Jason’s sudden outburst. At least at first. He sounded surprised. Betrayed? There was certainly something there. An edge to his words that gave something more than pleasantries away. 

After a pause, she nodded. Light and casual, with the slightest hint of fond scorn. “Of course. Not as often as I’d like, but he calls when he can.”

She observed him frowning to himself, trying to work something out for a moment longer before interjecting. “I’m curious. What it is about Dick and I talking, that surprises you?”

Arkham Asylum is such a funny concept to me. Like yes this is our comically on-the-nose haunted mansion/insane asylum we do absolutely nothing to counsel the criminally insane people in this asylum, at least three of our psychologists are also supervillains and we have the worst security you’ve ever seen. Last week Clayface broke out to watch a movie and we haven’t seen him since, and no one at Arkham thinks this is a red flag. I love it.
