There's this relatively recent guy whose work describes how literally all energies of the universe flow with astonishing precision. Based on their work, people theorised, and then based on those, discovered absolutely terrifying ways these flows can tear the space around them. If there's a calculation relating to practically any flow of energy - you need to consult their work, it's the best theory out there.
Also, there's another another guy, who, along with their collaborators, built the most complete guidebook on how to construct and interpret runic texts. Using the principles laid out in this guidebook mages have determined the ideal length of every stroke in the most basic of runes (like fire, soul and emptiness), discovered several absolutely new ones (who knew that thunder and lightning are actually separate entities?), and even proposed the mechanism by which voicing the magical formulas actually produces the magical effect they encode! "Of course voicing the spell makes it happen, are you dumb?", but we now actually know where the magic comes from.
The only problem is that those two theories are completely incompatible. Anyone who tries to inscribe a rune to determine the source of any given magic flow get blind - because wherever they look, they see the overwhelming concentration of everything possible all at once, at every point in space. "The space itself can't exist", the blinded sages speak, "in such a crucible, nothing can exist". The theoretical rune that could represent any given magic flow would be so complex and energetically taxing, that just inscribing it would tear the space around it apart. Sone genius brought out a theory that while energy flows themselves can't be described, the energetic halo that they disperse around them - can.
What's especially infuriating, is that everything the runes can describe at the most basic consists of those flows. We know that - we have a direct conversion formula that can separate anything into the basic energy. Applying it to a drop of your own sweat releases so much energy you would get vaporized if you attempted this.
Hey, worldbuilding idea concerning "what if magic, but it's a science": the more you learn about magic, the more obvious it is that we actually know fuck-all about it. Like a layman will say "ghostly forces are more sensitive to the haunting ghost's relatives due to the bond of bloodlines" with the same obvious confidence as "a rock falls to the ground because it's heavy", while students of the magical arts are baffled by these forces, along the lines of "fucking magnets, how do they work." Nobody knows how any of this actually works.
An ancient mage who is famed to be the most wise of all the ways of magic will sigh at another confusing dead end, admitting something like "in all levels except physical, the fae do not exist", and someone with only happenstance experience with the supernatural goes "what are you talking about, of course they exist, I've seen them", and the mage, exasperated, agrees. Yes, of course they do exist. But they shouldn't. And we don't know how that works.
The more you post, the more I feel like I would be right at home in Finland.
It's that time of the year again when I once again remember my in-built speed-heating system: regardless of how cold it is outside, I can remain warm by just keeping up a sufficient walking speed. It's about +7C out there, and I think it dipped below zero last night, and today on my way somewhere I had to take my jacket and hoodie off and walk the rest of the way in just a t-shirt or I would have started sweating. It would be theoretically possible for me to make this way completely ass naked wearing nothing but shoes in the heart of the winter without freezing to death nor getting arrested by simply walking at the speed of light, becoming invisible to the human eye.
But if I am forced to stop, even for a moment, I cannot keep up my vital functions and I will die, precisely the way that sharks don't.

This night was weird, I was constantly waking up because of sirens and weird dreams, at some point I've heard my bf say "Don't doze off!" so vividly, I turned to check if he's awake (he wasn't). An hour or so later I've woken up with the most intense cramp in my calf I've ever had, while still not being sure whether I'm actually awake, borderline surreal. And then I have to drive at 9am, with the sun frying my eyes and transforming every road sign into biblically accurate angels.
