“Is this the one you like? Or is it this one?”

Jungkook examines the two nearly identical cases in his hands, racking his brain to remember what you had just told him thirty minutes ago.

“He hates this brand,” you had emphasized, tapping on the box. “Make sure you get the other one.”

“Babe, I got it,” he had responded, tightening the straps of his carrier, adjusting Jungwoo to be snug against his chest. “Have a little faith.”

You were unconvinced, staring at him with a hand on your hip and a concerned frown.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to write down a list?”

The sheer hubris of his past self, to refuse—

Jungwoo, of course, does not respond to his father’s question—one, because he’s fast asleep, and two, because he’s six months old—not quite old enough to do much else other than be picky about his formula. 

Still, Jungkook and his son are a package deal now. He especially appreciates the company while running mundane errands—people tend to be (for some strange reason) much more helpful while he has an infant strapped to his chest.

“Excuse me.”

A saccharine-sweet voice pulls Jungkook from his thoughts, drawing his attention to the short, smiling woman who has appeared at his side.

“I couldn’t help but notice you’re trying to decide between those two brands.”

She bats her eyelashes as she speaks, gaze drifting between Jungkook and his carbon copy.

“My sister has a three-month old,” she explains. “He refuses to drink that one—Nestle is probably the safer option.”

Jungkook sighs in relief, a smile spreading across his face.

“Thanks, you’re a life-saver,” he says, shelving the unwanted box and placing the Nestle case into his cart. “He’s really picky, I’d be screwed if I got the wrong one.”

The woman’s smile broadens, and she reaches to tuck a lock of her russet hair behind her ear.

“Of course. My sister’s on her own too, I know how tough it can be.”

The sentence flies over Jungkook’s head. 

Though, in his defense, he’s running on three hours of sleep, and it slipped his mind to put his ring back on after training this morning.

“Yeah, for such a little guy, he sure can throw a tantrum,” Jungkook jokes with a grin, fondly stroking his son’s soft hair.

“He’s really cute,” the woman comments, biting back her smile as she tips forward on her heels for a better view of the infant.

Jungkook happily angles his body to show off his face in baby form, cradling Jungwoo’s small body in his large, ink-covered hands. He fails to notice the woman’s eyes lingering on the floral designs, her gaze following the strokes that pattern his entire arm, up to his bicep. (Her eyes stay there for a few extra seconds.)

“What’s his name?”

“Jungwoo,” he responds with an absentminded smile, his gaze fixed on his son’s small hand, which is now wrapped around his thumb. 

It takes a few moments for Jungkook’s attention to drift back to his new acquaintance, and that’s when he notices her fascination with his ink.

“Oh, yeah,” he says sheepishly, pointing out the calligraphy of his son’s name that’s etched into his forearm. “I know it’s a little cheesy, but I had to.”

“Not at all,” she blurts out, her smile broadening at the endearing sight. “That’s very sweet.”

She remains blissfully unaware of the artwork that decorates his other arm—your initials woven into a bold neo-traditional rose.

“Anyways, thanks for your help,” he says, reaching for his cart. “I hope you have a g—”

“Oh, um—sorry, this might be forward,” she interrupts him hastily, seizing the opportunity. 

It’s not everyday that you meet a man with a bunny-like smile, a boxer’s build, and the tenderness of a saint. She’s just as enamored as you were when you first laid eyes on him. 

“I’m really good with babies. I don’t have any kids myself, not even a boyfriend or anything,” she adds not-so-subtly, with a shy smile, “but if you ever need anything—I’d be happy to help. Can I give you my number?”

Jungkook may be sleep deprived, but he certainly isn’t dumb.

What he is, however, is too hopelessly lovestruck to comprehend the signals. The thought doesn’t even cross his mind, that anyone could be interested in him, not when his own interests are so singular.

His face lights up, sowing seeds of false hope inadvertently.

“Actually, my wife’s been looking around for a babysitter,” he says excitedly, completely missing the way the poor woman’s face falls. “I’ll have her give you a call.”

It takes him a moment to pull his phone out of his pocket while he has his arms full with a baby and a diaper bag, but he manages to hand it to her with a beaming face.

“Sorry, your name was?”

She mumbles it under her breath, suddenly less enthusiastic—much to his confusion.

And he remains confused when you tell him a few days later that she’d given him a fake number.

“She seemed like she really wanted to!” he defends himself fervently. “I just don’t understand why she would offer her number and then—”

You don’t need to hear the rest to understand what had transpired. And his doe-eyed insistence is a little too endearing for you to resist—you give him a small kiss, chuckling to yourself when he returns the gesture with a bemused look.

“What was that for?”

“Nothing. You’re just cute.”

He seems slightly skeptical, but a follow-up kiss, one that lingers a little longer, erases the incident from his mind entirely.
