SHE'S SO NORMAL YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW NORMAL SHE IS

got to the post-awakening makoann scene in the kaneshiro arc and it’s making me feel crazy again. I genuinely think it might be one of my favorite scenes in the game; it’s a smaller moment and it’s not a huge gamechanger for the plot, but it’s such a strong character moment. one of my favorite things about ann and makoto is how flawed and emotionally driven they are without being demonized, because it makes them feel more human. ann in particular is still recovering from an incredibly traumatizing ordeal, and getting her vengeance isn’t enough to simply make those feelings vanish. in reality, kamoshida was an adult man who horrifically abused his authority to force vulnerable teenagers, and young girls especially, into a situation in which they were powerless. it is irrational for either ann or makoto to blame themselves for his actions when he was the one who took advantage of his position of power. but just because it’s irrational isn’t going to stop the two from feeling guilty anyway. which makes sense.

their feelings are complex and messy and sometimes cause them to lash out, but they’re always still allowed to feel them. there are a lot of significant issues with the way persona 5 treats its female characters, but it’s so important to me that ann and makoto were allowed to have this conflict, and instead of it being trivialized and portrayed as a petty gag, it was given weight and they were able to genuinely reconcile and understand each other. they use this conflict to develop good humor and a more compassionate relationship with each other. the fact that makoto doesn’t just admire ann the way she would any phantom thief but instead explicitly has a unique appreciation for the qualities that make ann lovable and valuable as an individual such as her unwavering kindness, ferocity, and bluntness drives me insane. their negative, tumultuous first impressions concluded in them saying “you and I are the same” and finding ways to connect with and look up to the other person, and to want to be better because of it… I also love the way that the context lends a vulnerability and intimacy to their use of each other’s first names and how flustered ann becomes as a result, not just because it’s gay as hell lol but because it’s a perfect example of what I consider to be so humanizing about this scene.
