jungkook talking about how it was so fascinating and fun to see the members singing the song he wrote 🥺
i am so fucking sick of this bullshit. kpop idols, or any other non-American celebrities, are not required to speak up about the race protests in the US, because guess what? they're not American (this is excluding Asian-American idols who for the most part have spoken up about the issue, and should be expected to) I know Americans have a superiority complex the size of Jupiter, but newsflash: non-Americans have less knowledge about the US than an American, despite your best efforts to control global media and popular culture. that becomes much less if they don't speak English. I'm British, one of the most similar cultures to the US with the same language and a similar problem with racist police, but it still manifests differently. I still don't understand a lot of things that are only relevant to the US problem. you might be shaking your head and saying 'well, they need to learn about racism because it's a global issue.' you're right, it is a global issue. that's why you talk about police brutality in Brazil, where black deaths by police far surpasses the US, right? And why you 'cancel' any US celebrity who doesn't talk about it, right? Oh wait, no. Because those black people aren't in the US, so who cares? And these protests are not just about BLM. They are about a specific problem of police brutality and anger at Trump in the US. You cannot hold every non-American to the same standard for talking about US issues as an American, especially when you will never return the favour. Many people don't want to talk about issues outside their own country/region for fear of getting it wrong, because they don't have enough information. I talk about the George Floyd protests in the US because I am horrified by what I see happening (which I only see happening because of the global media bias to the US) and I think it's the right thing to do, especially when my country is supplying the US government with riot gear, and my proximity to US culture and shared language is (hopefully) allowing me to do that in an informed way. Many other non-Americans do not have the same level of information as me, the same language, the same confidence in their ability to understand the issues. Please just think a bit more critically about the responsibilities non-Americans have to talk about this.
