Im Bad at adding onto things but this has my jaw dropped bc as pointed above we’ve done company towns before and it was terrible!! In particular if you want a real gnarly example of what could go wrong, check out what happened in Pullman Illinois in 1894. Putting life and living in the hands of the employer is a horrific idea bc when times get “tough” economically, their interests are not on the conditions of their workers (lmao as if they are now or ever have been). There’s a reason Pullman’s family was so worried about workers desecrating his body after death that they buried the bitch in concrete.
