She lifted her head to look at you, “really?” A few tears fell onto her cheeks, and you lifted your hand to wipe them.

hey grandma,

it tears my heart open knowing that you might not remember me soon. you saved me from the hell that was my mom’s grip and you gave me so many opportunities. i noticed so early on that you had begun repeating yourself and forgetting things i had just told you. i figured it was because you were busy with work and still recovering from your surgery. now we know different. now we know there’s something eating at your brain and making you forget. you didn’t want me to know, someone else had to tell me. i know i might soon have to let go, but i’m not strong enough to keep going without you. i’ll never be strong enough. you know better than anyone else that i don’t have good coping mechanisms. you know i’m just going to bottle it up and pretend to be okay until it gets out of hand again and i end up hurting myself.

i’d rather be the ray of sunshine. i’d rather pretend it’s all okay, then maybe i can trick myself into believing it.
