summary: kaz taps three times. it’s his way to say i love you, i care.

the three times it took jesper to realize that three taps were something more than a meaningless habit.

a/n: did i write this in less than a day? yes. did the inspiration come to me at six am? also yes. what about your other 50 wip, anna? did you write anything for them? nope.

i. tap, tap, tap

Jesper had seen him do it more times than he could count. It was Kaz’s thing. Three taps, index finger hitting a wooden table, thumb brushing against a map or cane harshly meeting the floor. Most times they were fast taps, like a subconscious action, coming and going before anyone could give it any mind. Other times, however, they were slower, more emphasized, as if trying to make a point. Jesper was used to the taps, as he imagined (Y/N) and Inej also were. The sound came prior to every heist, prior to pronouncing the words of luck (no mourners, no funerals).

It was Kaz’s habit, something he probably did without even realizing, and Jesper couldn’t help but find it oddly comforting, a routine that somehow eased his nerves. (The world could be going to war, Ketterdam could be crashing down in flames, and Kaz would still tap three times. There was a sense of safety in that.)

It wasn’t until Jesper had a closer look that he realized the action was perhaps not as meaningless as he believed.

(Y/N) had known Kaz the longest out of all of them. Jesper hadn’t known the Slat without her, he hadn’t known Kaz without her. She’d always been there, a person in which the Dregs often found solace and always obtained an ear to listen without judgment. (Y/N) was a walking contradiction, soft around the edges yet powerful enough to bring the toughest people to their knees. She was everything Kaz wasn’t, maybe that was the reason they complimented each other as well as they did.

Feeling a bit emotional so I feel like this needs to be put out there.

Writers who put content out for you all to read, we get nothing from that. We aren’t paid like influencers are, we do it because we enjoy it. The support you give, fuels the writers in ways you can’t imagine. Sometimes, we can sit behind the screens anxiously waiting to see what you guys think of the latest work we published. Sometimes we can be having a terrible day and one message saying how you enjoyed the work can truly make a bad day into a good day. This goes for the artists and video editors as well <33

Fanfiction writers watching the slow trickle of Views or Likes on their fics just waiting and hoping for a comment or reblog.

Always grateful for Likes, even more thankful for Reblogs, but Comments (even hidden in tags) can turbo charge and power a writer through even the worst of blocks. Or at the very least turn a mundane day into a fantastic one.

Best case: When I see someone "Like" my fic and then immediately get notified that they've become a "Follower" (Wait, has that even happened?), I'm gonna be just like, "Screw sleep--I'm staying up to write more for this New Bestie Whom I Haven't Even Met."

Dear Readers, please don't underestimate how valuable your comments are to writers. Even if it seems trite or generic, or took you 3 seconds to write or has 1 typo for every 10 words. What you do when Az has a nightmare

A/n: my first headcannon!!!! Idk why I’m so excited abt it lol but enjoy <33

you’ll be sleeping soundly with your head on his chest, listening to the rhythmic beating of his heart, feeling his chest rise and fall at a steady pace. 

slowly, his breathing starts becoming rapid and disturbed, which wakes you up. azriel is still asleep but you see his face scrunched in discomfort. down the bond, you feel a crushing panic and a sense of hopelessness strong enough to bring tears to your eyes. 

immediately, you know azriel is having a nightmare and he’s back to that horrendous day he got his scars. 

shifting up, you pull his head to your chest, fingers tangling in his raven hair. you lightly scratch at his scalp while softly humming a random melody and sending all your love for him down the bond. 

azriel starts mumbling in his sleep, asking his stepbrothers to stop, to let him go and it breaks your heart to hear him like that. pulling him against you tighter.

his wings are tucked together painfully tight as if trying to stop his step brothers from touching them. you rub his back, right between his wings, and kiss his head, watching his wings slowly relaxing and draping themselves over the bed.

“it’s okay, baby. it’s just a nightmare. you’re safe and at home, in your bed.”

you continue stroking his hair and humming while occasionally kissing his crown and slowly, azriel’s breathing gets back to normal till he’s sleeping contently with his head on your chest, a small smile on his lips as if he knows you’re there in his sleep. 

the thought warms your heart. 

you stay awake for a little longer, holding his and scratching his scalp till you’re sure he isn’t going to have the nightmare again, then slide down so your head is rests on the pillow and go to sleep. 

in the morning, you wake up to azriel staring up at you with a smile on his face. 

“what?” you ask. “thank you for being there last night. i heard you humming in my dream. you made the nightmare go away.” you give him a smile and kiss his forehead. “anytime, my mate.”
