And If You Ever Want To Imagine The Future, Imagine A Boot No, Imagine A Sneaker, Laces Trailing, Kicking
“And if you ever want to imagine the future, imagine a boot… no, imagine a sneaker, laces trailing, kicking a pebble; imagine a stick, to poke at interesting things, and throw for a dog that may or may not decide to retrieve it; imagine a tuneless whistle, pounding some luckless popular song into insensibility; imagine a figure, half angel, half human… Slouching hopefully towards Tadfield…. … forever.”

Chapter 1.
"Home fucking sweet home, baby." the young woman set her bag down next to her. Albuquerque. She pondered. She hadn't visited this dusty town in how long? She was still wearing braces, dressing cutely, and playing with her pals five years ago. Oh, wait a minute. She did return to the town almost a year ago. attending her eldest brother's funeral. "Not much has changed," she thought. Still the same old Albie. She just attended it, put her worst face on, and only nodded when people gave her a pat on the shoulder and said, "Poor this little girl," even though she didn't shed a single tear.
Lila's childhood was rough. Her mother died giving birth to her; her father died four years later. and she was raised by her older brothers. Well, practically, brother. People always say it's a risk to have children at a very old age. That's what happens if you are horny at an old age and never use safety or birth control. When it happened, you would say it was a miracle. Godsend.
After Lila's parents died, she was raised by her brothers. Lila and her two brothers are very far apart in age. The age gap between the first child and the youngest child is very large. So her and Chuck weren't very close. Chuck was very stubborn, ignorant, selfish, and smug. That's why he and Lila don't get along. However, Lila and Jimmy used to be very close. Lila adores Jimmy. She always liked his older brother because of his unique heart; Jimmy is someone you wouldn't expect, full of surprises, and only he understands Lila. He was the one who really raised Sarah. Yes, well, it was Chuck who paid all of the needs for Jimmy and Lila in the past, but Chuck was never there. Jimmy was always there.
At the age of 18, Lila received a scholarship to Harvard Medical School. Fully funded. At first, Chuck refused to let her become a doctor; he wanted her to become a lawyer. But Lila insisted she wanted to go to medical school. Jimmy supported her. She deliberately applied to a college far from Albuquerque. She just wants to get away from home. She and Jimmy, who always love adventure, challenge, and something out of the box, When Jimmy heard that her little sister had been accepted, he was very proud and happy for her, and sad too. While Chuck? He couldn't believe that his sister could be accepted to Harvard. in a different way from Jimmy. Anyways, now Lila has decided to settle back in Albuquerque and has decided to apply as an intern doctor at Albuquerque Hospital so she can be close to Jimmy.
Well, the thing is. After Chuck's death, deep down, she knew that Jimmy was devastated by that. She lost contact with Jimmy for a few years but was able to reconnect. And now she has to take care of her only brother. Though Jimmy has a stable career now as a lawyer at HHM, the last time she heard from him, But, still, he's the only family she has now.
Lila plans to have lunch first before going to Jimmy's at the salon, where he once gave her the address. Lila hadn't actually told Jimmy that she had a job offer in Albuquerque. Jimmy would have asked her too many questions; he would have forbidden Sarah to come back to Albuquerque. Well, at least Lila plans to find Jimmy an apartment for himself and, of course, for Lila too. She hoped that they would be neighbors in the apartment, so that if anything happened, they could quickly and easily get help. She's saved some money from her job as a nurse. So, finances are not too problem for Lila at this time.
Lila saw a taxi, and she waved her hand. The taxi stopped, and Lila got inside, saying, "Where to, miss?" The taxi driver looked back. "Umm, I've just been back here for a long time; I'm hungry. Can you show me the best food here?" She said. "Ah, welcome back. "Alright, Los Pollos Hermanos it is."
━━━━━━━━━༻❁༺━━━━━━━━━━
"Oh, It's crowded in here, must be good then?" Lila looked out the window from the taxi looking at Los Pollos Hermanos. "Yes, miss. the chicken is really good, as I must say." The driver stopped the car beside the road in front of the restaurant. Lila nodded and opened her small bag to take the money, she gave it to the driver "Thank you, miss. Have a nice day." Lila smiled then took her belongings and her bag out of the taxi "You too." he drove off.
Luckily, Lila brought a bag that wasn't too big and heavy. The plan is that when she gets an apartment, she will buy new things, including some new clothes. She purposely donated some of her clothes to the hospital so that she wouldn't be too busy carrying a lot of stuff when she moved. As she walked towards the restaurant, she saw a flashy red car that had just been parked. There are two men inside that car, and she noticed that one of them has been staring at her all along, because Lila is the only person out here. She's trying to ignore it. Lots of people have been staring lately. Is it because of her clothes? She think it's not too open. Lila wears high-waisted jeans with a lace green tank top, which is covered by her half-waist leather jacket.
She's inside now, Lila is waiting in line while looking at the menu. There was a sound of a door opening. Lila looked back and saw the men who were riding in the flashy red car earlier. The man who was staring at her earlier looked around for a while before staring directly at Lila. They made eye contact for a while, then he smiled at her, it's almost looked like a grin. "But definitely this man is hot," she thought.
"Miss? Miss?"
"Uh, yeah." Lila shook her head when she heard the voice and immediately turned her gaze straight ahead, not realizing that the queue was now empty. "Yes, sorry." "What's your order, miss?" "Uh, I would like to order the single Pollitos drumstick, with fries, and a vanilla milkshake, please." He nodded and wrote her orders down. "And would you like an extra sauce?" or ketchup?" He asks again. "Do you have a cheese sauce?" She said, "Yes, we do have that; would you like an extra cheese sauce then?" "Yes, please, but separate it from the chicken." The boy nodded; he told her how much the total was, and Lila opened her purse to take some money, but she just remembered that her last cash had been used up to pay for the taxi earlier.
"Oh, shit, I've got no cash." "Do you accept cards?" Lila asked as Lyle looking at his name tag. "I'm so sorry, miss." But we only accept cash." Fuck. This is great. She's starving, and now she has to go to the ATM machine first. "Well, I have to take my cash first, then--"
"No, no. It's okay, the lady's food is on me. Lila looked back and found the man is right behind her. His tall figure made Lila slightly look up. Now she could really see him very clearly. He smiled at her, and when he smiled, his skin pulled up. He has a beautiful smile, and his doe brown eyes look a bit bright under good light, but if you look closely, you can see that there is darkness behind those doe brown eyes. He's a little bit older. His mustache looks great, She likes that. His hair looks nice and neat; he's got a gray streak on it, and when he talks, you can see it moves slightly and falls towards the front very beautifully. God, this man is beautiful. And she just met this man.
"Well. I can pay you after I take-" "No need to. It's on me, señorita." He smiled, and she was carried back. Lila smiled and said, "No, I can't do that." The man chuckled a little bit and said, "It's ok. I insist." She looked at his friend with a leather black jacket beside him, who only looked back at Lila in unamused way. "Well, thank you so much, sir." Lila smiled and stepped aside.
The tall man nodded and smiled at Lila. He came forward and ordered. He wore this pink shirt, with bubble gum blue shoes. It makes him even more handsome and hotter.
"Here you go, miss," Lila took the food and whispered a thank you to Lyle. Lila looked at the man earlier and said, "Once again, thank you so much." He nodded and smiled.
Lila brought her food and sat in a corner near the window. She was still looking at the man. She can't take her eyes off of him. Not long after, her phone rang, and it's from Jackie, her best friend since high school in Albuquerque.
"Hello, Jackie?" She heard a woman's voice panting. "Lila! "Oh fuck, I'm so sorry I forgot to pick you up earlier. I overslept. I'm so fucking sorry." Jackie was talking on the phone while taking a deep breath. "It's fine, Jackie." "Wait, what are you doing right now?" Lila frowned, "I was chasing Cookie, who was chasing the cat next door. I woke up to the sound of their fighting, then I immediately chased him out, and I just realized it was noon!" Jackie has been Lila's best friend since high school. Jackie is an accountant, Lila went to Harvard, while Jackie went to the University of Utah. They kept in touch all of these years; sometimes Jackie visited her in Boston and Lila to Utah. They were inseparable. After graduation, Jackie lived in Albuquerque with her mother. She's half Mexican. Her mother is from Texas, while her father was from Mexico. His father died when she was 15 years old. Jackie has a good relationship with his parents. She also has an older brother, Alfie, who is 10 years older than her. He's alright; he's a little wild, but he's fine. Lila thought.
Lila chuckled hearing her best friend talking. "No, it's fine, I took a taxi earlier." She said. "Where are you right now?" Jackie asked. "I'm having lunch at Los Pollos Hermanos. Heard the chicken is good here." She replied, She then saw The man earlier was walking towards Lila with his friend. He looked at Lila and smiled. "Oh, yes, Los Pollos is so good. The seasoning, the flavour, everything. Next time I'm gonna bring you to the Ice cream store that is the best in town now. Okay, let me know when you're done; I'll pick you up and drop you off at Jimmy's." Jackie spoke in the background, "Okay, I'll text you then." Lila's eyes were still on the man. "See you later, bubbikins." Jackie said, "See you, Jack." She hung up the phone just as the man stopped in front of Lila's table. "Excuse me, Señorita. "Can we sit with you?" he asked. "Yes, of course. It's the least I can do after you paid my lunch." She smiled, and then he slid in to the chair exactly in front of Lila. Now, they are face to face, while the other man just looked at Lila and sat beside him. 'What's the guy's problem?' He looks very bored, angry, and disinterested, and he looks scary. Meanwhile, the pink-shirted man looks friendly, smiling, and cheerful. It's weird.
"I'm Lila, by the way." Lila stretched her hand forward for a handshake. He looked at her and then took her hand. Goodness, his hand was a little bit rough; what did he do?
"Eduardo Salamanca. But you can call me Lalo. "Mucho gusto, Lila." Lalo smiled at her; he has a creepy but nice smile. "Mucho gusto, Lalo." She let go of his hand, then looked at the man next to her. From earlier, this man just stared and remained silent. Lalo noticed her looking at Ignacio. "This is my friend, Ignacio; you can call him Nacho." "He's a little bit grumpy, but he's not going to bite you." Lalo joked as Nacho tilted his head to look at Lalo. "But I am." He said again, It makes Lila laugh. Lalo looked at Nacho as if waiting for a response from him. "Nice to meet you, Lila." He said, still folding his arms, "Nice to meet you too."
"So, I noticed your bags earlier." "Did you just move here?" Ask Lalo. She nodded. "Yes, I just moved here from Boston." Lalo nodded his head and said, "Ah, Boston, eh?" "Why do you want to move from a big city to this dusty little town?" He asks with a playful tone, "I actually grew up here; I moved out for college, looking far away to see the real outside world, expecting to be someone big." "But look at me, back in this city again, 5 years later." Lila smiled, "Let me guess, Harvard medical school?" She opened her mouth with a surprised expression. Lalo gave her a grin. Nacho just looked at Lalo and Lila. "A very good guess. I'm Impressed." She said it while smiling.
Lalo shrugged his shoulder and said, "Well, you're from Boston; I notice you have a very steady hand when you take your food and carry the bags at the same time. And with your smart talks, I'm guessing a nurse or a doctor." His accent is very thick; it's like her ears were washed with honey and very sweet milk, and she wants more.
"Not yet, though." She smiled and ate her last chicken. Lalo's food is almost finished, while Nacho's is still full; it's like he never even touched it. "It must be good to be a good little doctor, isn't it?" saving people's lives." Lalo talked while eating. "Well, as long as I enjoy it, I'll take that." Lila sipped her milkshake; Lalo looked at her while chewing, watching her. How her light brown hair changes when exposed to the sunlight, how her dimples appear when she smiles, and how her heart-shaped lips seem so soft and pink, Her gray eyes lit up as she laughed. "So, Lalo. What do--"
"Is everything to your liking?" Lila's words was suddenly cut short because a man came, dressed neatly, like a manager at this restaurant. Lalo looked at him and said, "Are you kidding me?" He said while pointing at the food in front of him, "This is the best chicken I have ever had." He continued with a smile and kept chewing. The man chuckled, relieved, and said, "Well, I'm delighted to hear that."
But Lalo keeps talking, "No, really." I'm serious. I mean, it's crispy, but it's not dried out, and the seasoning... "It's so... flavorful."
The small thing that Lila noticed was that Lalo was always use his body language while he was talking, whether he was moving his body or making hand gestures. Lalo chuckled; his voice is like a pretty melody, and she craves for more.
"Well, thank you. Is there anything else I can do for you?" The older man said, looking at Lalo and then Nacho. Lalo stepped forward a bit and then spoke, "Is there any chance... and I know the answer is probably no, but is it possible for me to meet the owner?" Lalo looked at Lila for a while, then the man said, "I am the owner."
Lalo widened his eyes as if surprised, and Lila, who saw him, chuckled, "Really?" "How lucky for me." Lalo used his hand gesture and asked, "Would you be interested in franchising?" "Because I would be eager to invest." He looked at him right in the eyes and smiled. "Well, perhaps we should go to my office, where we can discuss it further." Lalo opened his arms and said with excitement, "Excellent!" He then started looking at Nacho. "Don't waste that," pointing at his food and then looking at Lila, "Señorita, I will be right back; don't go anywhere because you haven't paid me with your phone number yet." He smiled widely. Lila blushed and said, "I won't." and then smiled at him.
Lalo slides out of the chair, "This way." The owner said he was smiling, but his smiles faded when he looked at Nacho, while Nacho only looked at him back and opened up his fingers like he said, "I don't know what is happening."
Weird man, indeed. After that, there were only Lila and Nacho alone at the table. He looked at her. Oh, this is so awkward. Lila thought.
"So, Nacho," Lila tried to start the conversation, "what do you and your friend do for a living?" She asked. "He's not my friend." He said it coldly. "Okay." She said, "He's my boss." Then he say again. "Are you guys businessmen or something?" "Because I heard he wants to invest in this restaurant." She said again, "Kind of." He answered are short. Then Lila just nodded, understanding that Nacho wasn't interested in talking to her. She opened her phone just to see a message from Jackie, she replied it with she was done.
After a few minutes of silence and stares, Nacho opened her mouth and said, "You shouldn't be here." Nacho said, and Lila, who heard that and raised her head towards Nacho, said, "I beg your pardon?" She tilted her eyebrows. "You shouldn't be near him." He said it again. Now, she was a little confused: "But why?" She asked again to Nacho. Understand that he refers to Lalo. Why can't Lila be close to Lalo? He seems like a nice, funny, and charismatic man. Nacho didn't say anything else when Lalo suddenly came out the back door smiling. "How is it?" Lila asked Lalo, and Nacho looked at Lila then at Lalo.
"Ah, the chicken man is nice." "He will tell me the next procedure." Lalo is now sitting next to Lila. She can smell his perfume mixed with the smell of cigarettes. He smells very nice.
They were all facing the outside window when they heard a loud car horn. Lila could see Jackie waving her hand from the car. "That's my friend over there, sorry for the sound." She said. "Well, your friend is picking you up?" Lalo asked. She nodded while getting all of her things. "Well, I should get going now." She said again that she was standing up to get off the table.
"Espere un segundo, señorita. I haven't got your number." Lalo takes out his phone. She laughs a little. Lalo held out his phone to Lila, and she took it and typed her phone number, creating a new contact on Lalo's phone.
"Here's my phone number." "Now, you know where to call me." She was smiling and blushing at the same time. She gave her phone number to someone she had just met. This man is so hot, so why not? "Thank you once again, Lalo, and Nacho for the company." She said, and Lalo smiled and nodded at her. letting her go this time. He's still looking at her.
He noticed how she walk, how her body moves when she speaks. He saw her getting into the car, and the car drove off. Nacho, who watched Lalo, realized something: Lalo just found his prey.
Lalo took his milkshake and walked out of Los Pollos, Nacho followed him. Lalo paused for a moment before getting into the car. Looking straight ahead, Nacho was across him.
Lalo said, "What a girl." "Nacho, you got the car's plate number?" Nacho then nodded. Lalo then thought again, still standing beside the car door, "So you say you pick up six keys a week?" "Yeah."
"Where?" He sipped his drink. "He's got a chicken farm way out of town." Nacho said, tapping the roof of the car. "Show me." Lalo said with a cheerful tone and then got into the car. Nacho follow him, The engine starts.
"After that, we have to find where she lives." Lalo said in the car, then threw his drink out the window.

Of Swampy Dreams
Well as promised, here's my little fic based on the dream I had where Arthur shoved me through a window into a swamp, in order to escape from a house we were robbing! Anyway hope you all enjoy!

‘Aw shit,’ you heard Arthur mutter behind you, as you were rifling through a drawer. Thus far this home robbery had not proved fruitful. The most you and Arthur had found was a couple of dollars, some brass candlesticks, a few cans of food and that was about it. Evidently, the tip Arthur had received from a thief he had helped escape the law, was either deliberately wrong or he had mixed up the houses.
‘What is it?’ you asked, glancing over your shoulder.
‘We got company, dammit, why the hell is he back so early?’ Arthur barely let you push the drawer back into place, when he was already hurrying you into a back room. Dusk was creeping in rapidly and you could barely see anything apart from what little light was let in from a window. The window was set quite high up in the wall and there was no other way of getting out what looked like was a glorified store cupboard.
‘Well shit,’ you whispered, ‘How are we going to get out of here?’
Arthur rolled his eyes and pointed to the window.
‘I can’t reach that!’ you snapped.
‘I’ll give you a leg up, but hurry up, quit yappin’!’
He forced open the window and cupped his hands together to form a little step. You sighed heavily and then placed your foot in his hands, while grasping the window frame and inelegantly hoisting yourself up. You were busy muttering under your breath about this all being a pointless waste of time, when you realised as you were wiggling out the window that the murky, stinky swamp of Lagras was right underneath rather than any wrap-around porch or solid ground.
‘Arthur, wait!’ you hissed.
‘We ain’t got time to wait!’
‘The swamp is-!’ But he had already shoved you through the window and you landed in the swamp with a squelchy plop. You were lucky to have taken a breath before you entered the murky water, but as you breached the surface you wiped away the weed and mud from your face, as Arthur landed beside you.
‘You goddamn ass-!’ you began to exclaim, but he was already dragging you off.
‘C’mon, don’t want to wait to get caught, hardly be worth Hosea breakin’ us out of jail. And I assume ya don’t want to get eaten by an alligator?’
You squelched your way out of the bog, sticking to the reeds and bullrushes, so the homeowner would not spot you both. Though you doubted very much he would even notice the missing two dollars and would probably think he had misplaced the candlestick. You made it to the road, though you hated the way your boots were stuck fast to your feet and your clothes were drenched. Arthur whistled for the horses and you glared at him.
‘Some god damn robbery this was!’ you muttered.
‘Look, it don’ always go to plan.’
‘We may as well have pick pockets in Saint Denis or played poker, we’d have earnt more money!’
Arthur sighed and caught your horse’s reins as she ambled up to you both. Lacey nickered softly and Arthur gave her neck an absentminded pat, before gesturing for you to mount up.
‘C’mon, we’ll ride back to Rhodes and I’ll pay for you to have a bath,’ he said.
‘Rhodes? Ride back to Rhodes? I’ve got to ride all the way back-!’
‘Well how else you goin’ to get home?’
‘We are finding a god damn stream or river and I am washing the worse of this off. You can grumble all you want, but you aren’t soaked from head to toe in stinky swamp water!’
You mounted Lacey, without Arthur’s help and he stomped off. You barely waited for him to mount up on Topaz, instead kicking your horse into a quick canter and riding off down the forest path. You heard Arthur mutter something under his breath as you passed him, but he soon caught up with you. The sun was just sinking below the horizon and the hum and whine of insects was slowly growing louder, the boggy warmth from the swamp was cooling rapidly. You knew you weren’t far from the Kamassa River and even though the water would likely be very cold, you would be glad to wash yourself off.
There was a small island ahead of you, right in the middle of the river, and you pushed Lacey across to reach it. Once you had reached the middle, you jumped off Lacey and began to strip off your dress.
‘Woah! Easy!’ Arthur yelled, then quickly turned away as you caught his eye.
‘What am I meant to do?’ You snapped. ‘You get a fire going, so I don’t freeze to death, while I wash off.’
You stomped off over to the river, though you heard Arthur mutter under his breath about you being ‘So goddamn dramatic!’ First you gave your clothes a good wash, though to get out the smell you would probably need to wash them properly back at camp, but a thorough scrub removed most of the mud. Once you were done, you headed back to the fire Arthur had got going and flung your soaked dress over a nearby tree branch. Arthur was determinedly focusing on adding more twigs to the fire and you rolled your eyes at his stubborn back.
‘Not like you ain’t seen Karen or Mary-Beth in their underthings!’ you muttered. Half the women would walk around in the evening and early morning in their chemises or combinations, you included. You didn’t know why Arthur was making a big show of respecting your modesty all of a sudden!
You carefully dipped your toes into the river and hissed at how cold the water was. You bit your lip hard, so you wouldn’t shriek as the water lapped at your calves, then your thighs and your belly. This would be a quick wash and no mistake! You took several breaths, then counted in your head ‘1, 2, 3…’ and dunked yourself under the water. You let out a small scream in the water and quickly surfaced. God damn, it was freezing! Your head felt like it was full of icy needles. You scrubbed yourself furiously, then sloshed your way to the shore.
You suddenly realised that you had been a bit of an idiot. You didn’t have any other clothes and your combinations were completely drenched. You would need to strip off and wear your blanket wrapped around you, hopefully Mr Morgan would not faint in shock!
You darted through the small camp, grabbing the spare blanket from Lacey’s back and making your way into your tent.
‘I thought you was just goin’ to wash yourself off?’ Arthur said, you saw him look up at you, then quickly avert his gaze. Granted you’d forgive the modesty act this time, seeing as your combinations were sticking to your skin and you could easily see your nipples through the thin cotton material.
‘Well I did!’
‘I thought you was just going to wash your hands and face.’
‘Hey, you were the one who decided we should rob a house with nothing in it in a damn swamp! And then you shoved me through a window into said swamp! You don’t get to act like we’ve both been making great, smart decisions here.’
Arthur let out a small huff of laughter and lowered his head. ‘Alrigh’, sorry. But get out those things, ya goin’ to catch ya death.’
‘As if I didn’t know that!’ you grumbled, then walked over to your horse and pulled off the spare blanket you had. You began to strip off your wet clothes and scrubbed yourself dry. Once you were dry and tied your hair up, you wrapped the blanket around you. You brought your combinations with you and flung them over the tree branch. You took a seat by Arthur, next to the fire, and tried to get yourself warm, though you kept shivering with the cold.
‘Yer a damn fool,’ Arthur muttered, bringing out some dried meat and a can of beans he left near the fire to warm up.
‘You’re the one who decided to rob an empty house!’
‘I had a tip!’
‘Oh yeah, and it was a really good one! We’d have made more money shooting an alligator or getting their eggs and selling that in town.’ You managed to say through chattering teeth.
Arthur sighed, then began to rub your arms, almost making you lose your grip on your blanket.
‘Hey, easy! Thought Great Aunt Arthur Morgan was going to faint if he saw my tits!’ you exclaimed.
‘Great Aunt what now?’
‘What? Most men would be quite happy to have a naked cold woman all alone in a wood with them, but you act like you’re going to faint because you saw my ankle!’ you grinned, even though you were cold and Arthur’s hands on your arms were very warm. You couldn’t help wriggling closer to him, in an attempt to get warm.
‘I ain’t like most men and I ain’t goin’ to faint on seein’ your goddamn ankle, just… just tryin’ to be respectful, that’s all.’
‘Oh Arthur, you really are a gentleman, shoving ladies out of windows into swamps and then almost pulling their blanket down when trying to warm them up.’
‘Do you ever shut up?’
‘Only when I’m being shoved through a win-‘
He suddenly cupped your face and pulled you in for a kiss. His hand slipped behind your head, tugging you in closer and you felt your cheeks burn, as his lips met yours and you almost went to put your arms around him, but then remembered the blanket you were still clutching to your chest. He was so warm and smelt of whiskey and smoke and something earthy and sweet. You almost wanted to wrap yourself up in his jacket. Your heart was racing, every nerve ending alive with electricity and he was still kissing you, passionately, deliciously. Finally, he pulled away, though his hands still gently cupped your face, as he gazed into your eyes and a shy smile graced his lips.
‘Sorry, ya still stink of the swamp,’ he said.
You smacked his arm, though you couldn’t help laughing. ‘Well you owe me a new dress!’ You smiled gratefully as he pulled off his jacket and draped it around your shoulders.
‘Sure, think it’s the least I can do.’

“The thing that intrigued me about ‘Breaking Bad’ from day one was the idea of taking a character and transforming him.” –Vince Gilligan
