new tragic prefall headcanon acquired:

aziraphale and crowley became close in heaven before the fall. but crowley kept asking questions, of course. aziraphale heard (along the heavenly grapevine, word from higher up) that trouble was gathering on the horizon for crowley and tried to warn him. (imagine… they’ve got a favorite little corner of space to meet up in… to be together just beyond the watchful eyes of other angels because crowley’s still building it, it’s a work in progress, hasn’t been brought fully online so to speak: alpha centauri.) angel crowley was one part optimism and one part stubbornness. “ah, you worry too much, cherub. they can’t be so bothered by little old me...”

in the end everyone heard about how close aziraphale and crowley had gotten and an example had to be made both of crowley for the questioning and of aziraphale for being one who associated with dissenters. so after the (sham) trial, what crueler fate, who better to hand down the verdict to crowley than aziraphale himself, in front of all the assembled host?

and so: the night before the sentencing they’re together among the stars (their stars, though crowley shouldn’t think of them as theirs, and aziraphale shouldn’t think of them as a safe place because they’re not anymore. and yet in the hush of space and the wash of bright light… they can both pretend.) aziraphale is distraught. holding crowley’s hands in his, enfolding him in his wings like he can protect him from what’s to come.

“my dearest. you have to believe me. i’m going to be made to say things i don’t mean. and it will hurt terribly.” crowley, of course, tells aziraphale all is forgiven. but aziraphale says, “i’ll never forgive myself.”

and they stay wrapped up in each other for as long as they can. but the next day aziraphale is the one to pronounce to crowley that he has betrayed god and heaven and is going to be cast out. crowley gets dragged to the top of the staircase to hell, manacled and all, but he doesn’t let himself be thrown down it. his white feathers have started to fall out in a little trail behind him. he squares his shoulders and takes the first sauntering step himself because he knows, he knows his questions were never wrong.

and all the while he’s looking over his shoulder, eyes seeking aziraphale at the fore of the crowd. his beautiful aziraphale, who is standing there in official garb, motionless and horrified, having to play the awful part.

so aziraphale sees it the moment the brown in crowley’s eyes first starts to disappear, replaced by serpentine gold…

and then crowley is gone.
