Vethic 11 (or If You Want Something More In Character, Sierra 16)

the gap-filler is a terrifying temp that interviews in the thrown-together leftovers of outfits from the other people whose positions it’s ‘filled’

Hey nonnie, I wanted to reach out to ya as someone who has had zero friends before, and as an artist who had one ( @kimmathy BLESSHER) art friend for the first 6-7 years of developing my work. We loners have to stick together! ...well... you get it. Community can be important, but, as bug bug said, different things work for different people. I think one of the most powerful things about community is hearing how other people approach problems. And the thing is, artists are constantly sharing how they tackle problems! Search for tutorials on tumblr or dA or youtube, go to libraries and flip through books, buy some short tuts off gumroad, flip through art magazines in a bookstore, watch sped up drawing seshes, go to streams... Anything! Everything! Seriously, don't even limit yourself by medium. You think an oil painting book won't help you sketch better? Well, I wouldn't spend a lot of money finding out, but I also wouldn't spend a lot of money on a bet against it. I know I learned one of the most eye-opening color tricks of my life from a pixels tutorial I bought off gumroad on a whim. Having a personalized approach, an art friend to help you along, can be helpful, but lemme tell you my favorite little thing. No one else knows your brain like you do. Finding the process that works, the logic chain that helps you work the best... That's something you'll do on your own, no matter how many teachers you have! ITERATE!!! I cannot yell this at people enough! If it doesn't look good and you have another version in you, try again? What looked weird? What challenged you? Look up reference! Look up tutorials! Give it a few days! Erase if you have to! Draw over if you have to! Learn! From! Yourself! And! Your! Mistakes! Another thing community is good for is having another perspective on if your art looks 'off', and the truth is, anyone can do this! Show your friends, show your mom, show your roommate - laymen DO know when something looks weird, even if they can't tell you what to do to fix it. Don't be defensive! And at the end of the day, there are plenty of artists on tumblr who love to help out and answer questions. It never hurts to shoot off an ask, as long as you're polite!! Depression and anxiety can be kickers when it comes to socialization, but don't let yourself fall into the trap of not trying, nonnie. Trust me there. The trick is that, well, there is no trick. Keep at it, nonnie, and have a good time, and you'll get better!

what if other artists don't give you advice or even the time of day..?

You got art friends? There are tons of artists on tumblr who have tutorials, it’s very similar, go on anon and ask them if you’re shy etc. You can still find a way to reach someone some how.
