Matt realizes that Dex has been broken and unstable all this time, too late. Matt thinks that if he weren't so self-obsessed, he would have noticed it sooner.

Matt knows that other people's decisions and actions are not his responsibility, but he cannot stop thinking that if he himself had noticed someone else's condition in time and helped him, then everything would be different now. Maybe he and Dex could even be friends, since he seemed like a good guy. The thought is quick and stupid, but for some reason it’s difficult to forget.
