Been playing Dragon Age games again and got inspired to draw all my favorite companions

Great! So the main thing is that I am in literal awe at how well this piece works as a representation of Harrow's memory in the second book, despite the fact that you HADN'T READ IT YET?!?!

Putting the read more here for anyone who hasn't read Harrow the Ninth yet, because the entire rest of this post is major spoilers for that book 💚

Like okay first level, Harrow is suspended in the water of the pool, separated from Gideon only by the surface of the water. As a metaphor for Harrow's memory block, it's a pretty incredible one! All she has of Gideon in that book is an unreachable mirage that ripples and shifts away from her! It would also imply that the innermost parts of Harrow's mind are represented by the pool! (which is breaking my heart into little pieces so we'll move on)

Second level, we compare what's actually happening here to the events of the first book, keeping in mind how Harrow's memory of them is warped by the events of the second. In GtN, Gideon is an active participant in this scene. She's holding Harrow, and she dives both of them beneath the surface. Harrow thinks Gideon is going to drown her, and only panics when she realizes it's a hug instead. Then HtN happens. I don't in a million years believe that Harrow could convince herself that she shared this scene with Ortus Nigenad. Even if she could, he would never have progressed it in the way that Gideon did. So here, Harrow is beneath the surface alone. Gideon only watches from outside the pool (wow kinda like she's doing in Harrow's body in HtN!) and there's no hug to pull Harrow from the water and the drowning that she thinks she deserves.

And finally, the third level. Harrow's upbringing and culture. In the first book's pool scene, it is the first time (literally ever!) that Gideon has seen Harrow without her face painted. It's a very visual reference to the barriers that Harrow puts up to protect herself from others. But that can't be the case in the pool, which (by her family's rituals!) is the vehicle by which you see the absolute truth. And what's the absolute truth in HtN? Harrow's barriers are up the whole time, reinforced by her own blood, and she is drowning. Gideon is kept out by the thinnest of barriers, yet she is separated all the same. All Harrow would have to do is reach out and they would both be destroyed together! But Harrow has ensured that she will not, cannot reach out, and all Gideon can do is watch the part of the scene that she once led.

Solas trying to use "I have a plan" at the end of trespasser to reassure the inquisitor like he didn't just admit to fucking up his last two big plans literally seconds ago is made even funnier in light of the reveal that he does indeed fuck up that plan

Man is just out in the hinterlands cosplaying. Like replaying the game knowing Solas is the Dread Wolf adds all this cool intrigue and double meaning but replaying it knowing about Blackwall is fucking wild. He looks you in the face and lies directly out of his ass. Solas is all doublespeak and careful omission and Blackwall just fully makes shit up. What a madlad. I'm obsessed with him. he's so fake it til you make it. He would kill it on TikTok just like "oh yeah grey wardens can't get COVID it's right here in the treaties" and no one calls him on it because the treaties are old as fuck and boring. Alistair (who is supposed to be able to sense the Blight) is like oh hey blackwall haha we've definitely met I totally remember you. No you Haven't, Alistair. You've never seen this jackass ever in your life. He looks Solas, god of betrayal, in the eyes and says with full confidence "Yes, I am a Grey Warden." And Solas is like Sure. Iron Bull? Buys his bullshit completely. Leliana? Thinks he's cool. Everyone else is like "you smell like shit but I guess that's just how Wardens smell" and he's like "Damn Right It Is Have I Told You My Vietnam Stories" guy was born in '68. You can flirt with him almost immediately. Character of all time. What the fuck.

forever obsessed with artemis fowl who, upon realizing that he needs a fuckton of money in order to keep searching for his missing and probably dead father, doesn’t reach for his impeccable hacking skills or his ability to flawlessly recreate artistic masterpieces in order to commit art theft but instead runs the most absolutely insane and convoluted plan that’s ever been constructed (rivaled only by the insane and convoluted plans he constructs when he’s older and aided by time and practice). based solely, by the way, off of what basically amounts to the fairy bible which is written entirely in verse AND in a language that no human being has ever been permitted to see let alone translate. and the plan WORKS

Listen companies releasing half-baked games that require paid DLC to feel complete is bad but can we all agree it was objectively funny for Dragon Age 2 to lock the only straight character behind a paywall.
