Mourning Doves, Doves Mourning

I've always loved mourning doves,

I would mimic their cries as a stim when I was small.

As I grew older I learned to mimic other things to blend in,

But I always came back to the doves.

I find their low sad call calming,

It feels like the embrace I called for when my father passed.

Although the cry went unanswered in favor of louder cries,

And that shaped me a lot.

I got support but didn't have the words to say it didn't fit,

It was meant for louder birds,

Space held for brighter colors and faster fliers,

I felt like the odd one out.

I thought maybe I was grieving wrong.

Now I know I was just grieving in my own way.

That experience shaped me in many ways,

I grieve on my own now,

In times of quiet calm when I can hear my doves,

And feel the embrace I needed.
