Watching the Umbrella Academy and thinking about how much of a shame it was that Merlin didn’t have any Klaus-like powers. Obviously, to talk to loved ones, sure, but also to fuck around with Uther’s ghost like Klaus does Ben.

Arthur: is my father here?

Merlin: ....no. As it turns out, ghosts can’t travel on sacred land 🤷‍♀️

Uther, standing behind Merlin: are you kidding me?

Or, Merlin openly using magic as Uther rages in the background but there’s nothing he can really do bc technically Merlin can control him.

Merlin: you wanna watch me use magic?

Uther: I hope you die a painful death

Merlin: oooh I’m gonna make a butterfly...you better watch outttttt

pt 1 So I have this weird headcanon about Uther based around if the characters were reincarnated rather than resurrected. So Uther is obviously older and might regain his memories earlier than everyone else. But what if Arthur doesn’t remember in each life uness he meets Merlin. So in my idea Uther goes through his lifetimes trying to prevent Arthur and Merlin from meeting so that he doesn't infect his son with his ideals - aka in Uther's mind - stealing away Arthur's love and support and

I really like this. In general, this would be a cool book idea bc if we had no knowledge of the series then the audience would 100% probably take Uther’s side in the beginning. Then as the the story progresses you realize he’s actually a villain which is just a concept I’ve always loved.

AND YES. One thing I felt a little failed on in the series is that Uther had always been the ‘big bad’ for me to which I assumed there would be this grand scene vanquishing him. Only... there wasn’t and I was just left to be very, very confused. Like, even if Morgana didn’t get any redemption and stayed a villain I just kinda assumed Uther would have a antagonist ending. But a clown stabbed him... which was hilarious, but still. Also, Uther accidentally destroying the world via his BS is 100% on brand.

I can’t decide if I would choose for Uther to be redeemed or vanquished. I almost want to say vanquishing makes the most sense narrative-wise. Excalibur could probably end the resurrection altogether so if Arthur kills him with that then Uther is probs permanently dead. However, there is also some satisfaction in Uther becoming a more complex character via this particular storyline. I think it would be interesting to see how many ways you could try to mold his character while keeping the fundamentals the same. I’ve never been able to create a fully ‘redeemable’ Uther in anything I’ve written, but this seems like the opportunity to do it if it was framed as a desperate fight to save his son from people depicted as monsters. I think, if done correctly, having him subtly flip sides when realizing he’s wrong would be really cool. Especially if he’s only getting limited memories at first so he’s just slowly realizing he’s actually the bad guy. Coming to terms that you’re an awful person is another fun trope.

Also, the side Merthur potential during all of this... just Merlin and Arthur in the background meeting again and again in all those different ways is ~beautiful~ content. A thousand AUs in one fic.

Amazing TED talk on the way the strict gender binary harms us, by XY intersex woman Emily Quinn

image

Here’s an extract of her talk:

“I have a vagina. Just thought you should know. Just thought you should know. I look like a woman. I’m dressed like one, I guess. The thing is, I also have balls….I’m not male or female. I’m intersex.

“Most people assume that you’re biologically either a man or a woman, but it’s actually a lot more complex than that. There are so many ways somebody could be intersex.

In my case, it means I was born with XY chromosomes, which you probably know as male chromosomes. And I was born with a vagina and balls inside my body. I don’t respond to testosterone, so during puberty, I grew breasts… I don’t actually have a uterus – I was born without one, so I don’t menstruate, I can’t have biological children…

“We put people in boxes based on their genitalia. Before a baby’s even born, we ask whether it’s a boy or a girl, as if it actually matters; as if you’re going to be less excited about having a baby if it doesn’t have the genitals you wanted; as if what’s between somebody’s legs tells you anything about that person.

Are they kind, generous, funny? Smart? Who do they want to be when they grow up? Genitals don’t actually tell you anything. Yet, we define ourselves by them. In this society, we love putting people into boxes and labeling each other…

“But there’s one really big problem: biological sex is not black or white. It’s on a spectrum. Besides your genitalia, you also have your chromosomes, your gonads, like ovaries or testicles. You have your internal sex organs, your hormone production, your hormone response and your secondary sex characteristics, like breast development, body hair, etc.

Those seven areas of biological sex all have so much variation, yet we only get two options: male or female. Which is kind of absurd to me, because I can’t think of a single other human trait that there’s only two options for: skin color, hair, height, eyes…”

Listen to the whole talk here. Believe me, it is worth your time!
