Alright, So I've Probably Got This Translation Of The First Story In The Mononoke Spin-off Book About
Alright, so I've probably got this translation of the first story in the Mononoke spin-off book about as good as I can get it with my (non-existent) Japanese skills. It's a step up from machine translation and several steps down from like...what an actual translator can do, but I did my best and it's at least coherent enough to keep up with what's going on
So obligitory disclaimer, I don't own the original book or any of the ideas in it, you can go buy it the raw version off of Book Walker for about $5 USD, this is just a fan translation because if this book ends up with an official translation in my lifetime, I will be shocked, but I still wanted to read it. So uh. Don't sue me please and thank you
And of course, it's not Mononoke if it doesn't qualify for a mile-long content warning list, which is as follows:
-Graphic depictions of violence -Graphic depictions of child abuse (verbal and physical) -Graphic depictions of animal abuse -Body horror -Mentions of human trafficking -Mentions of sexual assault -Mild swearing -Non-graphic nudity
-I think that's all of them but let me know if I missed something
Anyway, all that out of the way, here's the link to the google doc for anyone interested, hope folks get something out of it

Mononoke is so up my lane like its stylistic it's experimental it has great character design it has 2-3 episode arcs the artstyle in the umi bouzu arc had huge gustav klimt inspiration it focuses on edo japan the tales are purely japanese in it's writing its abt youkai/ayakashi/mononoke it gives a story to the lived experiences of women in japan its sympathetic its heart wrenching it handles harsh topics with compassion its beautiful
Alright, gonna be posting the translation stuff and other Mononoke-related stuff here going forward, anyway!
Got the second story from the Mononoke book translated and edited. Took me a while to get what this one was going for, and I think I still don't necessarily understand all of it even still, but is it really Mononoke if you're not sitting there staring at the screen like 'wtf' for at least some of it and going to need a few exposures before it really sinks in?
And if you haven't had a chance to check out the first story (Kamaitachi) and you would like to, you can find it here
So again, obligatory disclaimer that I don't own any of the rights to this book and this is just a fan translation done by someone making slow but steady progress in Japanese. You can buy a digital version of the raw version of the book on Bookwalker for $5 (i need to find the link for that again, but that's where I got it)
And then, for content warnings, let me know if I missed any big ones:
-Mentions of period-accurate pederasty -Graphic depictions of violence -Attempted ritual suicide -Body horror
With all that being said, here's link to the translation below:
I also just want to check in, is sharing through Google docs generally accessible for everyone or would there be a better format to share it in? If I knew more about OTW policies on fan translations I would rather stick it on ao3, but since I don't and since this isn't fan fiction I'm playing it safe and not going that route for now, but if anyone's got suggestions for a more convenient way to share, I'd appreciate it
That's it from me for now, hope y'all enjoy :)
