Why Do Sims Age Up at 6 p.m.? A Hidden Detail from The Sims 2 Development

In honor of The Sims 2’s 20th anniversary, I’d like to share an interesting fact about the aging mechanics in the game! 🎂

Why do Sims age up at 6 p.m.? Initially, during the game’s development, Sims were supposed to transition to the next life stage at 7 p.m. However, due to bug #37450, the time was changed to 6 p.m. Meanwhile, lighting transitions still happen at 7 p.m., creating an interesting discrepancy in the game’s schedule.

This fact was found in the objects.package file of the base game under the Text List (STR#) resource. The resource name is Dialog prim string set, group 0x7F07FBBC, instance 0x0000012, in the English language section. The developers’ comment explains the time change:

8/1 change - time changed from 7 p.m. to 6 p.m. per bug 37450. Lighting transition is at 7 p.m., apparently.

This changed from 2 days to one day.

Note - this is the notification when a Sim is one day away from their age transition.

Today, September 18, in Chile we are celebrating our anniversary since the First Government meeting, which helped us consolidate our country as an independent country yayy

Sadly, I received an anonymous ask months ago telling me that Nervous could not be Hispanic because of physical appearance. During Hispanic Heritage Month, we try to prove everything that is contrary to that "belief"

If you are not a Hispanic person (or non Latino), I want you to know that comments like this are racist and violate the identity of many Hispanics, no matter if they are white or not; that you pigeonhole Hispanics/Latinos with certain physical features is horrible considering that we are a region of the world full of diversity.

If you think this is exaggerated, let me tell you that it is not. Our identity is just as important as yours.

By and large, the Curious brothers could have done without this duty visit to Willow Creek Hospital. Closely observing the changes in his body, Pascal quickly became convinced that the strange pain in his stomach had nothing to do with the stale pizza.

— Congratulations! — shining like a polished nickel, Nurse Jenny Smith pokes her finger at the screen of the ecography machine. — You have a... a baby! What a blessing, a pure-blooded alien! Do you want to take a look, Pascal?

— Congrats, brother, — Vidcund puts on a solemn face. — Your pregnancy is a priceless gift for all the Curious family. Due to you and your descendant, we can get closer to unraveling the mysteries of the space!

— Only the very genius sims are worthy of such an honor, — echoed Lazlo, trying to outshout Jenny's enthusiastic chirping. — Father would be proud of you, Pa!

Pascal remains silent and covers his eyes with his hand. The tiny alien inside him is noway to blame, but he doesn't want to look at the screen. Tears come to his throat. The warm feeling of family togetherness is joined by the acrid bitterness of resentment. None of them can to understand what he's been through!

Of course, the probing procedure was neither news nor a surprise to the young scientist. But reading about it in a dozen monographs is not the same as experiencing it firsthand! Flashes of horrible memories pass through Pascal's closed eyes, and an intense feeling of the global abnormality of everything that is happening overwhelms him.

Конечно же, процедура зондирования не была ни новостью, ни сюрпризом для молодого ученого. Но прочитать об этом в десятке монографий — совсем не то же самое, что испытать на собственной шкуре! Перед закрытыми глазами Паскаля проносятся вспышки жутких воспоминаний, и острое чувство глобальной неправильности всего происходящего накрывает его с головой.

👽 Presenting... Swapped Strangetown! 👽

🎈 A little gift for the 20th birthday of the Sims 2! 🎁

Love Strangetown, but tired of playing the same stories over and over? Well, here's a brand new version of Strangetown for you to sink your teeth into! 🏜️

A few years ago I made a series of pictures around the concept of the Strangetown premades, but with their backstories shuffled around to make new stories. A few times now people have asked if it's a real neighbourhood they can download so, well, now it is!

Features:

Same sims, different stories: General Buzz is now the mysterious widower of 13 Dead End Lane, Loki Beaker lives on 2 Cover Up Road with his wife and sister and is expecting an alien baby, Pollination Tech #9 is now in the military, and so on!

New relationships: Olive Specter and Glabe Curious have a rivalry that dates back to high school, Chloe and Ripp are dating, Glarn and PT9 are old enemies, and more!

Some changes to the canon timeline, for example Glarn still being alive and his abduction being more recent. There are other tweaks, too, like the teens all being a little younger.

Brand new lots for every household, combining their old and new aesthetics

New aspirations for some sims!

Main hood install instructions: Unzip STSW and place in My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\Neighbourhoods folder.

Notes & Known Issues:

The neighbourhood makes use of all EPs and Stuff Packs. EPs are definitely all required, but it should still be playable without all SPs. Some items will be missing though!

Some of the memories and ages of sims might not match up 100%, I shuffled things around a bit so there might be continuity issues if you look too close! 😅

Deceased sims do not have memories (this was already the case in the original hood, I didn't feel like adding them) and may not have correct relationships

Graves should be fine. If you have issues with them not appearing, try running the hood checker!

This neighbourhood uses @meetmetotheriver's Strangetown as a base (thank you for your hard work, meetme!), and so does not come with Bella Goth. Also, Glabe is interpreted as Glarn's sister, which I kept.

Welcome Wagons will show up! (unless you have a mod that disables them)

A few NPCs such as drivers spawned during play are included.

I did tweak the LTWs, but turn-ons are randomised. Obviously feel free to tweak any of these to suit your headcanons/storylines/etc, like you would with the basegame Strangetown.

Kirsten Loste is pretty much a blank slate, just like Ajay is in vanilla Strangetown
