The few times we see Abed on his own at lunchtime he does not really have a substantial lunch. Especially early on we'll see him with, like, a banana and a juice box. But he will have a full plate with his friends. And it's not like he seems concerned about gaining weight or anything. Headcanon that he struggles with the actual cafeteria environment because of sensory issues. But his friends noticed this and they try to be there to support him and make sure he has a proper meal. Troy will hold his hand in the crowds. Jeff has gone and gotten his food for him before when he couldn't do it. Britta will raise hell if people are impatient with him. Annie tells him she's proud of him. Shirley brings in sweet baked treats that she knows he will eat just in case, just to fill him up a little. And when she starts Shirley's Sandwiches she can actively check on him from her shop and it's easier for him to approach Shirley than someone he doesn't know so well.
