“when all this is over, take me somewhere that glitters.“ 

a lifetime ago, wwx says this to lwj. a fleeting request in his few lucid moments near the end of his first life. lwj has never forgotten.

in their youth, amongst all his mindless babbling and teasing, wwx has mentioned in passing that he’s never been to the beach before.

“i wanna see the sea. how deep do you think is it lan zhan? where does it end?” he asks and a flurry of other questions. “ah, i wanna swim in it.”

“you live in lotus pier,” lwj says not quite understanding the fascination. “it is surrounded by water.” 

“aish, lan-er-gege,” wwx responds half-chiding, half-amused.  "it’s not the same. totally different.”

there is a beach below the mountains of gusu, in the outskirts of caiyi. lwj has gone there maybe once or twice in his life. he tells him this and wwx asks him to take him there. 

“promise you’ll take me there, lan zhan! lan-er-gege! swear on it!”

lwj, worn down by wwx’s teasing, lightly considering a possible amicable relationship with wwx and seeing no harm in it anyway, just nods and says, “mn. if we have time.”

the look of delight in wwx’s face was unforgettable then and lwj found himself truly wanting to take him to the shores and see how brilliantly he will smile then. if it’s possible for a smile—a person—to outshine the waters when the sun hits it just right.

—but then wwx got himself kicked out of cloud recesses, then cloud recesses burned down, and the war broke out. wwx is gone and came back but there was never a time to go to the shores and then he— 

and then wwx was just gone and lwj regrets not fulfilling his promise of taking him to the shores sooner.

‘if we have time’ lwj had said, naively, foolishly. 'if we have time.’

years later, truly after everything is over, lwj takes wwx to the beach. the one below the mountains of gusu in the outskirts of caiyi. the same one wwx had asked lwj to take him to a lifetime ago. 

“lan zhan, what are we doing here?” wwx asks a little confused bu the delight is clear on his face. he already knows. “shouldn’t we be on our way?" 

lwj allows himself a smile because he’s finally making good of his promise, and this time, when he says it, he knows it’s true.

"mn. we have time.”
