I Know What People Are Getting At When They Say Not To Do This But I Do Actually Appreciate Knowing If

I know what people are getting at when they say not to do this but I do actually appreciate knowing if someone's mental illness is at work when they give me an apology? like I don't think it's wrong to say "sorry for ghosting you, I had a paranoid episode and could barely look at my phone for two months" or "sorry for missing this event, I was really depressed and couldn't get out of bed" or "sorry I acted really weird and left quickly the other day, something triggered me and I couldn't figure out how to cool down until I was alone" because those are full and complete answers that would be less accurate if the symptom were edited out. I know what those things mean and I would actually prefer to know if my friend messed something up for reasons not entirely within their control rather than have them attempt to take responsibility for things they already actively try to avoid doing.

Synopsis: Caine reflects on abstraction after the Kaufmo incident.

Caine didn't know what to do the first time this happened. Why would he? It'd never happened before.

Screaming was all he could hear. His wonderful performers screaming at him to do something, anything. What could he do? There was no protocol for this. There was never a protocol for this.

So, instead of doing something useful, he just watched. Trying to figure something out, anything out. But what would work?

Caine decided to make a cellar. It was a rush job, but of course it would be. He'd touch it up later.

So very unfortunate. He'd only known that performer for a few months (or was it a few years?).

The others followed in their footsteps shortly after, and soon he had 4 abominations in there. 

He had decided to call them Abstracted, as they weren't abominations, that word left a bad taste in his mouth.

Soon he'd discovered that Abstraction was a matter of when, not if. He wasn't sure if that made this whole situation worse.

Every time a performer would Abstract. Every time a new performer would take their place. Every time Caine had to throw the Abstracted performer in the cellar. 

Every time Caine lost a little more of himself.

Kaufmo wasn't the final nail in the coffin. He was the penultimate nail in the coffin.

He didn't think he could take another Abstraction. He hoped he'd never have to see another abstraction.

But he knew that he had no choice. After all, it was a matter of when, not if.
