Crystal and her parents, right? They don't reach out often. But when they do (she hates the hopeful spark that ignites in her chest each time, but she hasn't been able to douse it, yet) it's usually to request Crystal's presence at an event. And she--goes. Because that tiny spark whispers, what if? What if they missed you, this time? What if? And it's awful. It's high class snobbery and judgement and thinly veiled insults and. Ugh. Until Edwin tags along one time.

Charles & Niko are out, which means Edwin is in his extra bitchy Charles-less state of being (Crystal gets it, honestly) so she's like. Hey. Fancy party + auction w/rare books. You in? And Edwin is just (dramatic huffy sigh) fine, alright. And they're five feet in the door before Crystal gets forced into an awful conversation and struggling to keep it from bothering her (think of the diner & the girls' laughter) (this shouldn't bother her goddammit) but then Edwin murmurs the most sarcastic, snappy sentence she's ever heard at one of these (something about, this one would be terrible company even with cocaine involved) and she. Laughs. Has to clap a hand over mouth to to muffle it. And Edwin just...doesn't stop.

He and Crystal make up a nonsense system for judging peoples outfits, the items being sold, the quality of the food, and the salt-rank of any non-subtle insults being tossed around.

Eventually, they do decide to duck out. Edwin didn't look at any of the books. Crystal didn't try to talk with her parents.

Neither of them mind that much.

(It becomes a thing for them. Have fun on your date, Charles will joke, and they both make gagging motions.)
