The moonbeams suffusing through the transparent curtains are as cold as ice at this time of the night. You shiver and wiggle deeper into your cocoon of blankets, but the thick fabric does nothing to shelter you from the chills that run down your spine. You roll over on your side and squeeze your eyes shut against the brightness of the moonlight, knowing that you really should get some sleep before the night is over and you face your doom in the morning.

But there are too many noises that grate on your nerves in the foreign guest room you’re staying in. The clock on the mantle ticks too loudly, and the ancient wooden floor panels seem to ominously groan under the weight of all the ornate furniture. The only familiar sound is the heavy snores of your nursemaid from where she sleeps across the room. For a moment, jealousy clutches your heart, and you want nothing more than to shake her awake so she can suffer with you through your bout of insomnia. But she also has a big day tomorrow, and you refuse to burden her further.

After all, who else knows how to arrange your hair just right for your wedding tomorrow? At the thought of your wedding, you shudder again and pull the covers over your head. But the thick quilts are too expensive—fine silks instead of the soft cotton you’re used to, and they offer you no comfort.

You long to be back in your bed down in the south, to where your mother and sisters remain. But you know you might never see them again. Suddenly, you feel so alone—like a little lamb lost in a lion’s den. There is no familiarity here. And it’s too cold.

Saturday afternoons were reserved for your errands, at least when you had errands. You dreaded having to go to the store to buy groceries, hated having to put gas in your car, and most of all, you hated when your best friends would cancel on you. Namjoon always made doing your errands more fun, if anything, you enjoyed his company when you had to do such mundane things.

Surprisingly enough, Jimin had also told you he would be busy that afternoon so even he was unable to accompany you. You knew Jimin liked doing errands as much as you did, so you weren’t too surprised when he shut you down but promised to see you later in the evening for your movie night with Namjoon at your apartment.

You grumbled as you strapped your crossbody bag over your shoulder, checking to make sure you had your phone, wallet, and keys inside it before you stepped out of the apartment. You locked your door, raising a brow when you heard grunting from beside you.

Jeongguk threw the pillow across the darkened room, a crash sounded as all his deodorants and sunscreens came tumbling down from his dresser onto the floor, plastic pings and clatters accompanying his soft cursing. 

This was the third night in a row. 

Third night of no sleep whatsoever, no matter how many cups of camomile tea he drank before bed, or how much he danced and worked out to tire himself out, or how much asmr he listened to, nothing was working. Tonight, he had even popped a sleeping pill. He was absolutely against using these kind of drugs unless absolutely necessary, but he was desperate. Everytime he was at the edge of blissful oblivion, something would snap him back to consciousness. Whether it was house noises, or the hum of the fan, an annoying itch or a wayward thought or just… the image of your heavenly arms wrapped around him as you cradled him to sleep. 

He knew what he ought to do. He’d known you’d ruined good sleep for him for posterity the moment he’d woken up beside you three mornings prior. You’d been the little spoon, him the big. That’s not how Jeongguk liked his cuddles usually (he didn’t like cuddles period) but you had come to him seeking protection as part of the unsaid roommate loyalty and trust agreement and he had to oblige you.
