A little nighttime nonsense about Itoshi brothers and the Divine Comedy

Warnings: This is not some serious analysis. I just had an interesting thought that I wanted to think about. Also, I have read the Divine Comedy not in English, so some terms may be incorrect.

Recently, I had a strange idea that Rin and Sae are pretty similar to Dante and Virgil, especially in their childhood. I mean, the dynamics of student and mentor, a little bit of the dynamics of son and father, the difficulties that Dante overcomes with the help of Virgil. It all reminds me of the relationship between Sae and Rin, even their characters a bit similar. Virgil is positioned in Dante's work as a strict but wise mentor who can be quite formidable with the enemy. (Especially in hell, Virgil literally protects Dante from all harm, whether it's dangerous monsters or talking to someone who might not understand Dante. Virgil is also quite sharp-tongued yk.) While Dante admits himself to be more "unreasonable", in need of training and patronage from Virgil, whom he immensely respects and looks up to only from the bottom up. Does this remind you of anyone?

And it also makes me think about the parallels of Dante's path and Rin's path. Once in purgatory, Dante goes through the purification of sins and himself admits that his gravest sin is pride (Btw, his contemporaries noted that Dante was also a rather short-tempered man, although he did not describe it in his Divine Comedy.) But if Dante is going his way to become more righteous and get the right to go to heaven, then Rin, especially judging by the last chapters, seems to be going straight to hell. I love this manga more and more and it doesn't even need to do anything for it.

I find it very symbolic that the paths of Rin and Sae parted in the same way as the paths of Dante and Virgil parted. Virgil was not a believer during his lifetime and because of this he was sent to limbo, while for Dante "all is not lost yet", and therefore Virgil helps him go through hell and purgatory. It all reminds me a hell of a lot of the brothers' way, too. Now I wonder if Sae, like Virgil, will end up in hell, probably for the most minor sin, and where the road of destruction will lead Rin if he has already refused to ascend to heaven. (And, if my memory serves me correctly, Virgil disappeared completely unexpectedly when Dante's soul was cleansed. It's funny how many parallels can be found between two works that were created 7 centuries apart)

(Although right now, Rin and Sae's relationship is more like that of Dante and Virgil from Devil may cry. Rin is emo Dante from dmc 2… Now I can't get this thought out of my head)

Someday the day will come when I will finally stop hearing from some people thoughts like "psychology is not a science" and then the universe will probably collapse into a singularity. Ugh.
