Chapter Four: The Body

summary: Nancy fills Y/N in on the events that proceeded Barb’s disappearance and go talk to Jonathan.
word count: 2240
“Faceless..?” You whispered, leaning back in your seat as Nancy spoke softly into your ear from the desk behind you. You couldn’t help but be a bit skeptical. Everything she told you about Barb’s disappearance seemed more like the plot of the movies Robin made you watch than something that would happen in the small, safe town of Hawkins. “Maybe it was a mask-“
“It was not a mask,” Nancy frowned, catching the eyes of a few students around you. She sighed before lowering her voice again. “You don’t believe me either, do you?”
“No! It’s not that I don’t believe you,” You shook your head. “It’s just a hard concept to grasp, is all.. Wait- you said you told Steve? What did he have to say about all this?”
“He’s more worried about his parents finding out about the party than about what happened to Barb,” She huffed.
“Shocker..” You muttered under your breath. “I meant did he believe you when you told him about the monster?”
“Wh- I never said it was a monster.”
“A faceless thing that might’ve been the cause of two deaths? I think that qualifies as a monster, Nance,” You said matter of factly.
“Oh my god,” She rolled her eyes. “No, I don’t think he did. He tried to but.. He probably thinks I’m crazy.”
“Yeah, well, that makes two of us,” You smirked, earning a soft punch to the shoulder. “I’m kidding!”
Sort of.
“Nancy Wheeler?” The school secretary called from the doorway, making you both jump away from one another. Everyone’s eyes suddenly shifted to your friend who wore a deer-in-headlights look. “Come with me please.”
She shot you a glance and mouthed Cops. She hesitantly grabbed her bag and following behind the woman. Once class was dismissed, you made a bee line towards her locker. You were only met with the sight of Nancy gathering her things before she walked out of the school with her mother. Must’ve been some talk if her mom checked her before lunch.
You made your way back to your locker, mindlessly unlocking and opening it before you realized there was something out of the ordinary in there. You reached out and grab a piece of paper that read:
Meet me at my house after school. I need your help.
-Pants
“Help?” Robin asked as she peered over your shoulder. You quickly turned around and pressed the note to your chest. “Why does Nancy need your help?”
“Uh, you know, just- um,” You stopped yourself and took a deep breath. “.. Homework?”
“You’re a horrible liar.”
“Yeah, it was worth a shot,” You sighed, making her chuckle. “I don’t think I’m supposed to tell anyone. Trust me, if I could, you’d be the first know.”
“Mm,” She hummed with disapproval.
“Mm?” You echoed. “What do you mean mm?”
“You sure are spending a lot of time with Nancy,” She mumbled, catching the odd look you gave her. “Hey, I’m not trying to get on your case or anything, I just.. I don’t know, dude. Just watch your back. She might be an old friend but that doesn’t make her a good one.”
You nodded, not quite sure how to respond to that as you folded up the piece of paper and shoved it in your bag. You couldn’t help but wonder if what she was saying would still apply if she knew the whole story. She wasn’t wrong, but maybe she was missing too many details to be right.
“Anyways,” She looped her arm around yours before walking towards the cafeteria. “You’ll never guess what happened in band today!”
You loved that about Robin. She was never resentful; the most kindhearted person you’d ever met. Out of all of your friends, she was the only one that could bounce back from a heavy conversation as if nothing happened.
“-And then Emily suck her head in a tuba! It was really funny until we realized we couldn’t get it off. I hear they’re still trying to get it off..”
———
“Hi, Mrs. Wheeler,” You greeted as the door opened to reveal your friend’s beauty queen of a mother. “Is Nancy home? She seemed pretty upset before she left school. I wanted to come check up on her.”
“Oh, that’s so sweet of you, Y/N! I think that’s exactly what she needs right now,” She smiled, stepping aside to let you in. “She’s in her room.”
You thanked her and made your way upstairs, walking past a the other kids’ bedrooms before you finally arrived at Nancy’s. You could tell things were tense; her door was almost never closed. You brought your hand up and knocked gently.
“Go away, Mom! I already told you I don’t wanna talk!” She shouted from the other side.
“It’s me, you idiot,” You laughed, hearing as she scrambled to her feet before she opened the door.
“I need you to come look at this,” She said, pulling you in and leading you to her room, you tossed your backpack on the ground as you approached her bed. She held out her hand and presented the torn photograph on her bed. “What do you see?”
“Uh.. Barb sitting on a diving board,” You responded, looking back up at her. “Why?”
“Look closer,” Nancy pointed at the top right corner. You looked for a moment before shrugging and glancing back at her. “Right there. Look right-“
“Dude, obviously you’re seeing something I’m not. Just tell me what I’m looking at because all I see is a disfigured tree.”
“That’s the faceless man I saw!”
Your eyebrows raised before leaning in, trying to truly take in the picture and find the silhouette of anything else but a tree.
“I don’t see it,” You finally said, making her roll her eyes. “It’s too dark. Who took this picture? Maybe they can brighten it and enlarge it.”
“Jonathan Byres took this the night she disappeared,” Nancy handed you the picture before fetching her bag.
“Oh,” This must’ve been from the same series of pictures that resulted in Steve breaking his camera. And if that were true, this picture was taken moments before she disappeared.
“We need to go find him and talk to him!” She nodded. “Maybe he saw something I didn’t or maybe he can at least confirm that I’m not crazy.”
“Is it bad that I’d rather just believe you’re crazy?” You sighed. “If that thing is real, then..”
“Yeah,” She pursed her lips, looking you in the eyes. “Then it could be the cause of the disappearances.. Look, I totally understand if you don’t wanna come. This is-“
“Are we walking or riding our bikes?” You bent down and slung your bag over your shoulders. She smiled.
———
“Nancy!” You whisper yelled as you followed her through the funeral home. “This is crazy! I don’t think now is the time to ask him for this favor. He’s literally in the middle of..”
Your voice trailed off as you both stumbled upon a room filled with caskets. It suddenly all felt real to you; your missing friend, the death of your brother’s friend. The caskets before you would be their final resting place. You swallowed the knot in your throat, not wanting to make a scene in front of the boy who is burying his baby brother.
“Can you just give me a second?” He asked the mortician.
“Of course.”
“Hey,” Jonathan phrased it as more of a question.
“Hey,” You both muttered before Nancy spoke up. “Your mom, um… She said you’d be here. I just— Can we talk for a second?”
The three of you walked out and took a seat in the chairs that lined the hallway, Nancy separating you both. You pulled out the picture, assuring him you were only asking him about the object in the corner.
“It looks like it could be some kind of perspective distortion, but I wasn’t using the wide angle,” He explained softly. He’d always been a quiet person but you didn’t miss the way that your friend to bring out a more gentle side of the boy. “But I don’t know. It’s weird.”
“And you’re sure you didn’t see anyone else out there?” Nancy asked.
“No,” He said with certainty. “And she was there one second and then.. gone. I figured she bolted.”
“The cops think she ran away,” You added, earning his gaze. “But they don’t know Barb. She’d never do that.”
“Yeah, and I went back to Steve’s, and I thought I-.. saw something. Some weird man or-“ She took a breath before back tracking. “I don’t know what it was.”
You kept your eyes on Jonathan’s face as she spoke, noticing the way his eyes widened as if he recognized the spiel. She only caught a glimpse, mistaking it as rejection.
“I’m sorry,” She said quickly, taking your hand in hers and standing up. “We shouldn’t have come here today. I’m so sorry.”
“Wait,” You placed a hand on her shoulder. “Jonathan, you looked like you had something to say to that. We aren’t here to judge or reject any theories. Just looking for answers is all.”
“Y/N, let’s just g-“
“What’d he look like?“ He spoke up. “This man you saw in the woods.”
“I-I don’t know,” Nancy stammered. “It was almost like he- he didn’t have-“
“Didn’t have a face?” He asked. Your lips part. He did recognize the spiel.
“How did you know that?” She asked.
“I need to show you something,” He stood up. “Follow me.”
He walked quickly, you both had to jog to keep up as he led you to the school. He weaved his way through the hallways until you stumbled upon the dark room that the photography club used to process their film. You didn’t speak, allowing him to set up his station. He seemed to be particularly fond of Nancy, so you kept your distance, hoping it would encourage him to talk comfortably. As he busied his hands, he explained that his mother explained the same creature that Nancy saw.
“Did she say anything else?” She questioned. “Like where it might’ve gone to?”
“No, just that it came out of the wall,” He said as the machine dinged. You took a moment to wander around the room, observing the photos people took, careful not to touch anything.
“How long does this take?” You heard her ask.
“Not long.”
“Have you been.. doing this awhile?”
“What?”
“Photography?”
“Yeah,” He muttered. “I guess I’d rather observe people than, you know..”
“Talk to them?” She smiled up at him. Even in the darkness, you recognized that look in her eyes; the same one she gave Steve.
“I know. It’s weird.”
“No-“
“No, it is,” He stammered. “It’s just, sometimes people don’t really say what they’re thinking. But you capture the right moment, it says more.”
“What was I saying?” She asked. You blinked. Is she flirting?
“What?” Jonathan asked, holding eye contact with her. Is he flirting?
You turned around to hide the smile on your face. You didn’t want to ruin their (weirdly timed) moment.
“When you took my picture.”
“I, uh.. I shouldn’t have taken that,” He whispered. “I’m sorry. It’s just-“
“That’s it,” Nancy’s face fell. You quickly rushed over, peaking over their shoulders. “That’s what I saw.”
“What?!” You squeaked, running over to see the picture. That was definitely not a tree.
“My mom. I thought she was crazy. ‘Cause she said that’s not Will’s body. That he’s alive.”
“And if he’s alive,” You breathed, looking up at them.
“Then Barbara is too,” Nancy finished.
———
“You can’t tell anyone,” Nancy told you as you walked up to her house. “About what we saw. Not even Robin.”
“I can’t tell anyone that there’s some sort of faceless murderer running around Hawkins?!” You scoffed.
“We don’t know that it’s killing anyone-“
“We need to tell the cops, Nancy!”
“They won’t believe us!” She shook her head before placing a hand on your shoulder. “You’ve heard the way people talk about Joyce- the way they look at her. Everyone thinks she’s crazy. Especially the cops! Look, we just need to find out a little more and gather more proof before we go to the cops or else we’re the new town loonies.”
“I’d rather be labeled as a loonie than watch someone else go missing,” You protested.
“Please,” She breathed. “Just another week, okay? If someone else goes missing or if we collect enough evidence by then, we’ll go to the cops, alright? Just.. Just trust me on this.”
“Trust you?” You scoffed, not meaning for it to come out quite as rude. You almost didn’t process your tone until she dropped her hand from your shoulder. “Shit. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean-.. Okay, fine. I’ll trust you. But the second someone else goes missing, we are going to the police, promise?”
“Yeah,” She nodded, keeping her gaze lowered. “I promise.”
“Why do I get the feeling we are in way over our heads?” You mumbled.
“Because there’s a big possibility that we are,” She pursed her lips. “Call me when you get home so I know you made it.”
“Okay,” You breathed, looking at your friend. You hesitated for a moment before reaching out and wrapping your arms around her. She naturally did the same.
“Be careful,” She whispered, holding you a bit tighter before you let go and went your own way.

I’m accepting name ideas for this series!! I’m stumpeddd
a/n: I apologize for the short chapters in season one of this series. My vision for Y/N in this season is to show her background with other characters/how she fits into the show. I really want her to feel as though she’s been in the show from the get-go. I want to build her as her own character; independent, capable, and strong. Think of S1 as more of a prequel to the rest of the series.

Chapter 5
S2 Episode Five

SUMMARY: The pack get word that Derek is trying to kill Lydia, and make it their mission to protect her.
WORD COUNT: 6224
“Hey,” The all-too-familiar voice purred as you opened your locker. You rolled your eyes, not needing to look towards it to know who it was.
“Aren’t you supposed to be running from the law or something?” You answered.
“Who says I’m not just teasing the law now by coming to school?” Isaac smiled, leaning on the locker next to yours to get a better view of you. You cursed the empty hallways, wishing you wouldn’t have shown up so early that morning.
“I doubt your pack daddy would approve of that,” You chuckled, looking over to see the smug look on his face falter. “Or did he let you off of your leash for the day?”
“Ouch,” He held his chest sarcastically before smiling. “What happened to you? You used to be such a sweetheart.”
“That was before you gave me a reason not to be. Did you need something or are you just trying to get on my nerves?” You scoffed, closing your locker to look into his playful gaze. “Again.”
“A little of both,” He smirked. “But my pack daddy wouldn’t approve of what I’m about to tell you so I’m gonna need you to come with me.”
“I’m not going anywhere with you.”
“Suit yourself,” Isaac shrugged, looking over your shoulder. “Scott’s looking for you anyway. I’m sure you’d so much rather hear another one of his pathetic apologies instead of Derek’s plan to kill someone today.”
You looked behind you to see the boys walk around the corner in deep conversation. Stiles waved his hands around as he passionately explained something and Scott listened intently. Luckily, they were so submerged in the conversation that you went unnoticed in the midst of small crowds of students. However, you weren’t quite ready to face your best friend.
You placed your hands on Isaac’s chest and quickly pushed him into the nearby empty classroom. His brows shot up in surprise as he stumbled back, catching himself on a desk.
“You have two minutes, asshole,” You frowned, looking down at your wristwatch. “What do you mean Derek is going to kill someone today?”
“I only need one,” He grinned. “He gave Jackson the Kanima’s venom last night to see if it would paralyze him and it did. So it can’t be him. He think it might be Lydia.”
“What the fuck?!” You furrowed your brows in suspicion. “Wait, why are you telling me this? Why should I believe you?”
“Maybe I’m telling you because I wanted a moment alone with you,” His lips curved into a coy smile, making you frown. “And you should believe me because we have a bond.”
“Ew, would you stop saying that? We do not have a fucking bond!” You snapped.
“I’m serious! I wouldn’t lie to you,” He sincerely admitted. “I don’t even think I could if I tried.”
“Yeah, okay,” You brushed off sarcastically. You hated that he was getting in your head. You wholeheartedly believed it was a scheme but he was becoming a little too convincing. You didn’t know what to believe anymore. “What makes Derek think Lydia is the Kanima?”
“Peter gave her the bite. There are only two things that happen when someone gets bitten, turn or die. She did neither and now we have a Kanima on our hands.”
“What if she’s somehow immune to the bite? How do you know she won’t be immune to the venom too?”
“He said it’s not possible to be immune to the bite. It’s never been done before,” He shook his head, leaning on the desk behind him.
“Oh, so it must be true if Derek said it,” You scoffed. “Your blind devotion will lead to your downfall.“
“I could say the same to you,” He shrugged. You narrowed your eyes, not quite ready to defend the boy he spoke of. “If you wouldn’t have listened to Scott, this would all be over by now. We’re just finishing the job that you couldn’t follow through on the other night.. You can’t save everyone, Y/N.“
“Don’t talk to me about the other night. That’s between my pack and me. I don’t care to hear your opinions or commentary,” You hissed, feeling a dark cloud of anger begin to sneak it’s way back into your subconscious. You took a breath when you saw his face fall, attempting to take your emotions and thoughts back under your control. “Look, there’s a better way of going about this. I don’t want to kill an innocent teenager if we aren’t one hundred percent sure that she really is the Kanima. Forgive me for trying to spare the life of my best friend.”
“You were so eager to kill an innocent teenager the other night. What happened?” He smirked. You clenched your jaw, feeling the storm of emotions quickly brewing in your chest. “Suddenly your morals shift because your afraid of losing someone you love?”
You fell to silence for a moment as you recollected your thoughts, clenching your fists in an attempt to prevent any black mist from forming. “You’re playing with fire, Isaac. Don’t taunt me-.”
“For telling the truth?” He scoffed. “You were fully ready to kill someone’s kid, sibling or friend by the pool. But now that it might be yours, you hesitate?”
With that comment, you felt something snap within you; you were no longer in control of your emotions- your magic. You felt your eyes darken, similar to the way they did the other night. Your fists felt hot as they began to emit the black mist that often decorated them now. His boyish grin faded as you stepped toward him, making him almost trip on the desk he leaned on as he tried to step away.
He attempted to stand up before you held your hand out, making him sit back on the desk as you leaned in close, sensing and feeding off of his fear.
“You forget who you’re talking to, Lahey,” You smiled as your fingers brushed his neck. “Do you realize how easy it would be for me to cut off the circulation to your head? All I have to do is think about the veins and arteries in your neck, and they’ll pop.”
“Let me go-“
“Ah, ah, ah. I’m talking,” You cooed, pressing your finger against his lips and sealing them shut with the help of the black mist. You chuckled dryly. “I think we both know that if you really wanted to help me, you wouldn’t be sitting here mocking and judging me. No, I’m not too convinced you were trying to help me at all. I think Derek sent you to talk to me.”
“Mmm! Mmm!” He mumbled.
“Let me make myself perfectly clear, Isaac,” Your smiled quickly dropped before your tone darkened. “If you so much as touch a hair on her head, I will not hesitate to kill you and your pack. Slowly and painfully. Got it?“
He nodded spitefully before you smiled again, waving your hand to unseal his lips.
“What happened to your pack’s moral code?” He spat, making you let out a breathy chuckle.
“You chose the wrong pack member for that,” You responded before nonchalantly stepping back as if nothing happened. The cloud of black that once covered your hands evaporated as you reached for the door. “Thanks for the heads up though. I gotta get to class.”
“Are you just gonna leave me sitting here?!” Isaac cried as you reached for the door. “I can’t move!”
“Oh, I actually don’t know how to undo that. Don’t worry though, it should wear off soon,” You smiled before leaving the room. You readjusted your backpack as you walked down the now heavily populated hallways of Beacon Hills, looking for your boyfriend. You felt a smirk form on your face, remembering the look of utter fear on Isaac’s face when he couldn’t speak.
You loved the feeling that was left in your body. The power you felt when you hovered above him, the way your magic pumped through your veins like a drug, the chaos you created in his mind; it was addicting.
“Hey! You’ll never guess what my dad told me this morning!” Stiles smiled before looking into your eyes. “Did you cry? Your eyes are bloodshot. Oh my god, are you high?”
“What? No! My allergies are just acting up,” You played it off. “What’s your dad tell you? Wait, is it about Isaac coming back?”
“What the hell? Yeah, actually. How’d you know that?” He tilted his head. Something was off about you this morning, he sensed it but decided against asking about it again.
“He pulled me into a classroom and told me. He also told me that Derek’s going to make Lydia eat the Kanima’s venom to see if she has a reaction to it,” You lowered your voice. “They’re gonna kill her if she doesn’t.”
“Wait, what? They’re gonna kill her? But she didn’t even have a reaction to the bite. What if she’s immune to the supernatural?”
“That’s what I said. But apparently Derek’s convinced that it’s not possible,” You shook your head. “We need a plan.”
“Follow up question: since when are you and Isaac friends?” He questioned.
“We’re not. He just won’t leave me alone,” You huffed. “He thinks I cast some sort of bonding spell when I stopped him from killing you at the Sheriff’s Department a while back.”
“On the night of the full moon. Yeah, I remember that,” He nodded, grabbing his backpack from his locker. “What do you think?”
“I think that theory has Derek written all over it,” You rolled your eyes as you both began walking to class. You felt odd not telling him about the magic you used only minutes prior, but you knew now wasn’t the time to bring up another issue. You needed to focus on Lydia.
It had absolutely nothing to do with the euphoria that came with the magic pumping through your veins and the confidence it brought with it. Or the fact that the sensation went away when you healed yourself with Scott’s blood, leaving you with a light and clear, yet uncomfortably empty mind. It was not your black-misted subconscious clouding your judgement because this was solely for Lydia’s well-being. At least, that’s what you kept telling yourself.
“I don’t know. I’d be on my knees if you looked at me the way you looked at him,” Stiles smirked.
“I’ve had you on your knees for less,” You smiled, making his lips part as a subtle blush rose to his cheeks at your reference to the previous night’s events. You two have been getting hot and heavy for the past few days, not quite going all the way due to parental interruptions but going far enough to almost make due. It was not only your comment that caught him off guard, it was the confidence you said it with too. That alone almost drop to his knees on the spot
“Anyways. Could you catch Scott up on Lydia’s situation? We need to take turns staying by her side today. I got her covered up til Math. Then it’s up to you guys until Chem,” You continued casually before giggling at his flustered appearance. “You feeling okay, baby? You look a little flushed.”
“You fucking asshole. I gotta get to class,” He chuckled as the first bell rang, looking down at your smug look. Before walking off, he leaned down next to your ear and mumbled, “For the record, though, I plan on having you begging you on your knees tonight.”
“I don’t beg,” You narrowed your eyes playfully.
“Yeah? We’ll see about that,” He smiled before kissing your cheek and turned on his heels to walk away, leaving you with the same pink tint on your own cheeks. You let out a small laugh before turning to head the class.
“Why are you so giddy?” Lydia grinned as you took your usual spot beside her.
“No reason,” You responded, making her laugh.
You spent the rest of the day by her side, switching off with Allison or the boys when you didn’t have a shared class. The first three hours dragged along slowly. You kept catching Erica and Isaac’s dirty glares and hushed voices. The anticipation was killing you. You caught yourself looking over your shoulder constantly and keeping Lydia nearby at all times. You even followed her to the bathroom in second hour. You finally let out a breath of relief when you switched shifts with the boys.
After a quick stop to your locker, you made your way down the corridors of the school to your next class. You were lost in thought when you felt a hand grab your upper arm and pull you aside. You quickly whipped around to see your best friend staring back at you.
“Scott, what the fuck?” You gasped. “Jesus you scared the shit out of me. Who’s on Lydia duty?”
“She’s with Allison. Can we talk about the other night?” He sighed. “I hate fighting with you.”
“I don’t have anything to say to you,” You frowned.
“Well, I do,” Scott began, not letting go of your arm in fear of you walking away. “Y/N, I’m so sorry for reacting the way I did at the pool. I know there were a million better ways of having a discussion about our different views and opinions. I blew it way out of proportion. I‘m just.. I don’t know. I’m just scared of the possibility of your magic making you crazy, you know? So I assumed you weren’t in the right headspace but I get now that you were. I’m sorry for doubting you. And for yelling at you. I still don’t necessarily agree with what you did but I really am sorry for being such a dick.”
“You really were a dick, huh?” You smiled, making him laugh.
“So we good?” He grinned. You nodded before he pulled you into a hug. “You promise to tell me if you feel like you’re going crazy?”
“Mhm,” You smiled. It wasn’t a lie; you weren’t going crazy yet. You were just riding the magic high for a little longer.
“Okay,” He chuckled. “I’m gonna go to class. Meet us afterwards?”
———
“Someone help me?” You read off of Stiles’ phone. “What the hell?”
“Maybe she knows!” Scott offered, earning a glare from his best friends. “What?”
“Leave this to the big boys, alright?” Stiles patted his shoulder before turning to you. Allison smiled sympathetically at her boyfriend, holding his hand. “What do you think?”
“Honestly? I don’t think this has any correlation to Derek. You remember how she screamed at the ice rink? It might just be a case of PTSD,” You said, looking down at the screen again. “A really weird one.”
“So what’s the plan for chemistry? I heard we’re doing something weird today. I don’t know if we’ll be able to keep an eye on her the whole time,” Allison spoke up. The four of you looked into the classroom to see Lydia mindlessly doodling in her notebook. You moved aside as the last student from the previous class walked past you before you got an idea.
“Hey, your name’s Nicole, right?” You smiled at the girl, earning a friendly lab. “What are we doing in Chem today?”
“Some lab where we turn goo into crystals. We switched partners a few times,” She answered kindly.
“How many times?” Allison asked.
“Like four.”
“Okay, thanks!” You smiled before turning back to the pack. “Four. That’s perfect! We just have to take turns as her partner!”
“Will do.”
“Sounds good.”
“Shoot.. Guys, we have company,” Allison said as you all walked in. You all rushed to take the seat next to Lydia, earning an odd glare from her and the rest of class.
“I mean I know I’m popular but this is new,” She blinked. You all chuckled before Mr Harris spoke up. He began with his usual insult before explaining the lab.
“You’re going to combine efforts through a round of group experiments. Let’s see if two heads are indeed better than one. Or in this group’s case,” He said, looking over at the four of you hovering above Lydia. “Less than one. Erica, you take the first station. You’ll start with-“
He paused when the hands of virtually every teen boy’s hands flew up.
“I didn’t ask for volunteers. Put your hormonal hands down. You’ll start with Mr. McCall,” Mr Harris said before looking over at the four of you again, assigning you all to your stations. Allison was up first with Lydia followed by you then Scott.
Towards the end of class, Stiles switched seats with the girl next to you to have the chance to be your partner for the last rotation.
“Hi,” He greeted.
“Hi,” You smiled. “You’re going to get in trouble.”
“No, I won’t!”
“Mr. Stilinski,” Mr. Harris called as if on cue, drawing all eyes on your boyfriend. “You’re supposed to be at Station Two.”
“But-“
“I don’t want to hear an excuse. You’re lucky I decided against giving you detention. Go!”
“Fine..” Stiles grumbled, gathering his stuff and plopping down at Station Two. He looked over at his partner to see Isaac staring back at him with a smirk. “Great. Of course he’d put me with the killer werewolf.”
“I haven’t killed anyone yet,” Isaac smiled before looking at Lydia who was leaning forward, talking to you. Stiles followed his gaze before frowning.
“If you keep trying to make a move on my girlfriend or lay a hand on her best friend, I’m gonna turn your little werewolf ass into a fur coat and give it to her as a birthday present,” Stiles threatened as he continued the experiment next to Isaac.
“Oh?” Isaac chuckled. “I’ll stop trying to make a move when I stop smelling her attraction towards me..”
“Spare me the fake details,” Stiles muttered, mixing the concoction in front of him. “I mean.. if you genuinely believe there’s some sort of special bond between you two, be my guest. She’s not into you, my guy. Just know I’m not too worried about it.”
“I would be,” Isaac chuckled, catching Stiles’ attention. “Don’t get me wrong, she likes you. Loves you even. But there’s a science behind attraction. Pheromones. And I can smell them. She digs me, bro. On a biological level.”
“I’m actually surprised you know such a big word,” Stiles said condescendingly. “Can you even spell the word pheromone?”
“Are you calling me dumb?”
“The fact that you’re asking me for clarification,” Stiles began, looking straight into Isaac’s eyes. “Answers your question.”
“I don’t like you.”
“Cry me a river,” Stiles scoffed.
“Mm, no. I think I’ll fuck your girlfriend instead,” Isaac smiled as he looked back at you, gaining Stiles’ wide-eyed death glare. Isaac shrugged. “I’ve never been very good at crying.”
“Alright, class! Move to your last station!”
“I thought we were only moving four times,” Scott asked Harris.
“Mr. McCall, I’d be more concerned with the state of your crystal than the amount of stations I’m making you move to,” He replied. You all looked at one another before seeing Isaac slip into the seat next to Lydia. There wasn’t much you could do but finish your projects and keep an eye on her from a distance.
You finished your project with another student, proudly lifting up a crystal. You looked to your left only to be greeted by Stiles holding up something that looked like cement in his beaker.
“Now for the part of that last experiment I’m sure you’ll all enjoy,” Mr. Harris smiled. “You can eat it.”
Stiles shot you a look of disgust, making you giggle.
“Go ahead,” You smiled from the desk beside him. “Eat it.”
He scrunched his nose. “Hell no! This looks like the cafeteria’s mashed potatoes.”
“Here, you can eat mine,” You held up your crystal and held it out for him to take a bite. He smiled and took a bite, only for the rest of it to crumble into pieces.
“Oh, man,” He mumbled. “I was gonna give the other half to you.”
“LYDIA!” Scott jumped up, making everyone gasp from his volume. Your eyes quickly shifted to Lydia who sat in her seat in shock, waiting for Scott to say something.
“What?” She asked.
“Uh..” Scot hesitated before realizing he couldn’t do anything about the crystal that was covered in venom. “Nothing.”
The class fell to silence, all watching him as he stood awkwardly behind her before he took his seat again.
She took a bite into the crystal. You waited for her to have a reaction but it never came. The bell rang a few minutes later and she practically skipped out of the classroom.
“Follow me,” Stiles took your hand and led you all to Coach’s empty office for a quick talk.
“Derek’s outside waiting for Lydia,” Scott explained.
“Waiting to kill her?” Allison asked.
“If he thinks she’s the Kanima, then yes,” He nodded. “Especially after what happened at the pool.”
“It’s not her,” Stiles argued.
“Stiles, she didn’t pass the test, man. Nothing happened,” Scott said softly.
“No, it can’t be her,” You agreed. “I feel like I should have some sort of gut feeling, you know?”
“It doesn’t matter because Derek thinks it’s her,” Allison intervened. “So either we can convince him that he’s wrong, or we’ve gotta figure out a way to protect her.”
“I doubt he’ll try anything here,” You chimed in.
“True. Not at school anyways,” Scott nodded.
“What about after school?” Allison questioned. You and Scott fell silent again. “Well what if we can prove Derek’s wrong?”
“By 3:00?” Stiles scoffed.
“Yeah, there could be something in the bestiary!”
“Oh, you mean the 900-page book written in archaic Latin that none of us can read?” Stiles deadpanned. “Good luck with that.”
“Actually I think I might be able to translate it,” You said, gaining everyone’s eyes. “What? You told me to learn Latin so I’ve been learning Latin. I can’t translate it perfectly but I can try.”
“That’ll do. Uh, I can talk to Derek,” Scott suggested. “Maybe convince him to give us a chance to prove that it’s not her. But if anything happens, you guys let me handle it, okay?”
“What does that mean?” Al asked.
“It means you can’t heal like I do,” He admitted.
She reached into her bag and grabbed a crossbow. “I can protect myself.”
“Same here,” You smiled. Stiles gave you a look. “What?”
“You still can’t control it, Y/N. It’s probably better if you don’t use magic today,” He spoke softly. “Let’s just keep you out of the crossfire, yeah?”
“Come on! I can be of use today,” You pouted.
“Same,” Allison nodded.
“No, he’s right. I don’t want you guys getting hurt,” Scott nodded before turning to his girlfriend.
“Fine,” You sighed, leaning next to Stiles. You looked over at him and saw him messing with Allison’s crossbow as Scott spoke to her. You zoned out slightly as you watched Stiles pretend to aim and shoot it at Scott.
“Seriously, if anything goes wrong, you call me, okay? I don’t care if your dad finds out. Call, text, scream, yell, whatever. I’ll hear you and I’ll find you as fast as I can,” He grabbed her face, looking deeply into her eyes.
You heard a snort come from your boyfriend. You looked up at Stiles to see that he was laughing at the theatrics of the couple in front of you.
“Stop that,” You whispered to your boyfriend, trying to hold back a laugh as the couple continued on with their conversation. “Let them have their moment.”
“I can’t help it. They’re so dramatic,” He whispered back, catching Scott’s attention.
“Can you guys fuck off?” He huffed. You no liner could hold back a chuckle. Stiles grinned before taking your face into his hands. “Can you blame me for being nervous-“
“Call, text, scream, yell, whatever!” He exclaimed with exaggerated passion.
“You promise you’ll hear me and find me as fast as you can?!” You grabbed at your chest before he kissed you dramatically.
“You two really couldn’t be more perfect for each other if you tried,” Allison rolled her eyes.
“Quick, let’s see who can get their tongue furthest down the other one’s throat!” Stiles pulled away briefly only to lean back in with his tongue sticking out.
“Ew,” You laughed, pushing him away and making him giggle. “Sorry, Scotty. I promise we’ll be careful. If worst comes to worst, I got their backs.“
“Thanks, Y/N,” He smiled, pulling you in for a quick hug. “Be careful, asshole.”
“You too,” You muttered before letting go.
He nodded before turning around and walking back into the hallway. The three of you waited for a moment before Stiles went to go find Lydia. You followed Allison to the library so that you could connect the flash drive to a computer. You took the seat next to hers as she pulled up the page that spoke of the Kanima.
“God, this might be a little out of my reach,” You breathed as you attempted to read the words.
“It’s okay, just try.”
“Okay, uh,” You cleared your throat before continuing. “Kanima. Like the wolf, it’s power is greatest at the moon’s peak… Hold on, what does this mean..?”
“You speak French and take Spanish, fill in the blank,” Allison sighed. You have her a look, annoyed with her pushy tone. “Uh, sorry. I meant to say please.”
“Alright, it says that like the wolf, the Kanima is a social creature, but where the wolf seeks a pack, the Kanima seeks… a friend?” You finished. “What does that mean?”
“Maybe it’s lonely?” Allison asked before a look of realization dawned upon her. “Oh my god. Like a teenager.”
You gathered Lydia and Jackson as soon as the bell rang and drove them to Scott’s house. As soon as you all got into the foyer, Stiles turned around and locked every single lock on the front door before turning around to see Lydia’s confused and unamused look
“Uh, there’s been a few break-ins around the neighborhood,” Stiles pursed his lips.
You grabbed a nearby chair and placed it under the door handle, shifting their attention to you.
“And a murder,” You added.
“Yeah, it was bad,” Stiles agreed, trying not to smile. Lydia furrowed her brows, opening her mouth to say something before Jackson beat her to it.
“Lydia, follow me. I need to talk to you for a minute,” He said before leading her to Scott’s room.
“Nice job, you two,” Allison chuckled. “That was almost convincing!”
“Almost?” You and Stiles questioned.
“Well, I for one think we were pretty damn good,” He smiled, giving you a high five.
The three of you continued to chat for the next hour, choosing to ignore the argument that was taking place upstairs. You made sure to lock every door and window around the house. You opted to stay at the entrance of the house because it allowed you to have a better view of the street.
“The sun’s going down,” You mumbled, gaining the attention of the two teenagers. “They should be coming soon.”
“They’re here,” Allison whispered, peeking out of the window. Stiles’ eyes widened before he scrambled to the nearest window, taking a look for himself. “We need to call Scott.”
“Here,” Stiles dug his phone out of his pocket and handed it to Allison. She told Scott it was time for him to come home before hanging up and handing it back to Stiles. You all sat around for another ten minutes, waiting in anticipation for them to attack but nothing happened. “What are you doing?”
You looked over at Allison to see her messing on her phone. She looked up with teary eyes.
“I think… I think I have to call my dad,” Her voice was shaky.
“No, but if he finds you here, you and Scott-“ Stiles protested.
“I know,” She interrupted, making the room fall to silence. “But what are we supposed to do? They’re not here to scare us, okay? They’re here to kill Lydia.”
You all stopped and glanced back at the pack of werewolves that slowly paced around in the front yard. You looked over at Allison, seeing her antsy hands debate on calling her father.
“I got an idea,” Stiles said, looking at Allison. “Just shoot one of them.”
“Are you serious?” She breathed.
“We told Scott we could protect ourselves, so let’s do it,” Stiles spoke as if he didn’t know who he was convincing; the two of you or himself. “Or at least give it a shot, right?”
“Okay,” Allison said.
“What about me?” You asked.
“Hold off for a second. They don’t think we’re going to fight. So if one of them gets hit, I guarantee they’ll take off,” He shrugged. “So just shoot one of them.”
Allison slowly moved the curtain and looked out again. “Which one?”
“Derek. Yeah, shoot him. Preferably in the head,” Stiles said.
“If Scott can catch an arrow, Derek definitely can,” Allison shook her head.
“Okay, then shoot Isaac,” Stiles muttered, recalling their earlier conversation. “Again, preferably in the head.”
“Isaac’s not out there.”
“What do you mean? I just saw him,” You protested, peeking out to see only the other three standing together. You felt your stomach drop before seeing Allison aim. You looked over at her right as a hand reached out for her and knocked her to the ground. “What the-“
You felt someone flip you over their shoulder, and next thing you knew, you were lying on the floor gasping for the air that got knocked out of you.
“Hey!” Stiles shouted before Isaac sent him flying backwards into the wall. He groaned as he hit the floor. He looked up to see Isaac was making his way back to you. “Now, Y/N! Use your magic now!”
You smiled. The energy you’d been pushing down since that morning all rushed into you within milliseconds. It was a different sensation than before; your hands no longer misted and your chest didn’t feel as heavy. This was less overwhelming and less powerful but easier to control. It wasn’t coming from a place of emotions, you’d consciously summoned the magic.
“Y-your eyes are glowing green!” Stiles called, worried it was a bad sign.
“You sure want a round two, Lahey?” You smirked, hopping back onto your feet. “You weren’t much of a match this morning. What changed?”
“I’m actually trying to hurt you now,” He smiled before lunging at you. You held out your hand, focusing on and sent him flying back.
“This is you trying? How cute!” You laughed, looking at Allison and motioning upstairs with your head. She nodded and ran up. “Go.”
He growled with frustration before jumping on his feet and running towards you. You put your hand up but he dodged the force you sent his way. Your eyes widened before you jumped out of his way, kicking off of a nearby wall and running around him. He was right on your heels though. You thought you’d successfully dodged him before you felt his hand grab a fistful of you hair and pull you back, sending your body flying towards the front door. You grunted before looking up to see you’d landed between Erica’s legs.
“And you call yourself a witch,” She sneered, lifting you up by your shirt and holding you in the air. “Where is she?”
“Who? You’re gonna have to be a little more specific. There are a few women here,” You smiled.
She frowned before launching you into the dining room table. You felt the wood break against your back as you flew into it. You groaned again, feeling the pain erupt in your ribs as you rolled on your side. You coughed as you sat up, seeing dribbles of blood fly from your lips. Erica giggled before slowly making her way back to you. She pushed your shoulder back into the broken table, making you hiss from pain.
“I’m gonna ask you one more time. And if you don’t answer me, well,” She hovered above you and looked to her left. You saw Isaac holding his claws up to Stiles’ neck, similar to the way Peter held Kate in her last moments. “We kill him.”
You felt your chest tighten with anxiety before a wave of anger settled into your chest. Before you knew it, you felt the familiar black mist take over your mind one again. Your eyes no longer shine green; instead, they were now completely dark, the black covering even the whites in your eyes. Your hands began to mist and the pain in your body subsided into nothingness as magic pumped powerfully through every vein in your body.
“That little magic trick with your eyes doesn’t scare me, princess. Where is she?” Erica purred. “WHERE IS SH-“
She grabbed at her throat as she tried to choke in some air. You stared blankly at her, not moving a muscle as you lifted her and launched her backwards with lethal force. Your eyes snapped towards the claws that teased at your boyfriend’s flesh. Isaac’s eyes widened with fear before his wrist snapped backwards, touching the back of his forearm. He screeched in pain and dropped to the ground, gripping his arm.
“Okay, Y/N! That’s enough!” Stiles cried as you walked toward Isaac. You looked up blankly before fixing your gaze on the boy whimpering on the floor again. “Y/N! Don’t!”
You lifted your hand, not knowing exactly what force would come out, wanting nothing more than to see the boy who threatened your boyfriend dead, when out of the corner of your eye, you saw Erica run up stairs. Your head snapped her way before running towards the stairs to stop her from finding Lydia.
“Scott!” Stiles breathed as he saw his best friend run into the dining room. “She’s out of control again!”
“Who? Lydia?!” He asked, looking over to see you running up the stairs. “Oh shit..”
Scott didn’t hesitate to follow you, jumping over the rubble and onto the stairs. He grabbed your arm and pulled you back. He almost gasped at the sight of your eyes; completely overtaken by darkness, ready to kill.
“Let go of me! She’s going after Allison!”
Allison. He faltered; every cell in his body was telling him to go protect his girlfriend. But something told him that if he left you in this state, you’d kill Derek’s pack without hesitation. He smelled your craving to kill; there was a chance you wouldn’t just stop with his pack. Morally, he couldn’t leave you alone, regardless of Allison’s dangerous situation.
“Look at me!” He shouted, showing his golden eyes.
“Let go!” You pleaded.
“I SAID LOOK AT ME!” He roared. Your body instantly stopped fighting his grip, relaxing into his touch as you looked into his eyes. “Snap out of it! Fight it! You’re stronger than this.”
He watched as the whites of your eyes and your Y/E/C orbs returned to normal. You gasped before blinking in confusion, looking around at your surroundings.
“You good?” He asked urgently.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m good,” You nodded before looking towards his room. “Oh my god, Allison. Erica was-”
“Go find Stiles, I got Al,” He ordered before running off.
You slowly made your way back downstairs, grabbing at your throbbing ribs as you hobbled into the entryway. You quickly found your boyfriend, hovering over Isaac. They both looked up at you as you walked into the dining room. Your heart sank at the look of fear they both gave you. What have you done?
You awkwardly wrapped your arms around yourself, opening your mouth to say something before hearing Scott come back downstairs with Erica dangled limply on his shoulder. He grabbed the collar of Isaac’s shirt before opening the door and throwing them both out of the house. Allison and Stiles both followed Scott out but you hesitated, not knowing if they wanted to be near you. You didn’t even want to be near you.
Stiles noticed your hesitation and reached out his hand, inviting you to come with him. You looked at it before back into his warm gaze, taking his hand into yours as he guided you onto the porch. The four of you looked down at Derek proudly.
“I think I’m finally getting why you keep refusing me, Scott,” The Alpha spoke. “You’re not an Omega. You’re already an Alpha of your own pack… But you know you can’t beat me.”
“I can hold you off until the cops get here,” Scott responded as distant sirens grew louder. Footsteps scurried along the roof, catching everyone’s attention. You all ran out from under the roof to catch a glimpse of the Kanima. It looked over at you all and screeched before running off. You felt Stiles grab your waist and pull you in subconsciously.
Lydia’s heels clanked on the ground as she ran out of the house.
“Would someone please tell me what the hell is going on!?” She demanded.
“…It’s Jackson,” Scott muttered.

“-Is everything in the box?” You asked as you walked up to the kitchen table and dug through it, making a mental note of everything inside of it. “Bear trap, gun, bullets, Nancy’s got the gasoline… Jonathan! We need a yo-yo, a lighter, a hammer, and some nails for these bats.”
“On it.”
“So how exactly are we planning on… luring it out?” Nancy looked up at you from the other side of the table. You pursed your lips, reaching in your bag and taking out the pocket knives you lent your brother when he went out looking for Will. “Oh… All of us?”
“No, just me,” You deadpanned. “Yes, dumbass. All of us.”
“Add sanitizing those knives to the list of things to do,” Jonathan muttered from behind you.
You began by screwing in a multitude of bulbs into the dangling christmas lights throughout the house. Jonathan bolted the bear trap to the hallway floor, Nancy loaded the gun and poured gasoline on the carpet, you hammered some nails into a baseball bat and set up the yo-yo alarm before you all came together to finish setting up the bear trap.
“Remember-“
“Straight into Will’s room and-“
“Don’t step on the trap.”
“Wait for the yo-yo to move-“
“Then..” Jonathan struck the lighter. You all let out a shaky breath. “Okay, you ready?”
“Ready,” Nancy said. You looked down to see them holding the knifes up to their palms.
“You idiots are going to cut your palms?” You scoffed, gaining their gaze. “That’s like the stupidest and most painful place to cut. You’re going to need your hands. Cut into your non-dominant upper arms where you normally get vaccines. Jesus, must I walk you through everything?”
They rolled their eyes and moved the knives to their upper arms. You all counted to three and sliced, hissing in pain before quickly moving to the couch. You all sterilized your wounds with alcohol, wincing again as the dripping cotton swab was wiped repeatedly over the cuts. Then you cut off pieces of gauze, giving it to everyone so they could wrap their lacerations securely.
Just as you finished up, there was a faint creaking on the porch. You all looked up.
“Did you hear that?” Nancy whispered. You reached for a bat, wrapping your hand securely around it.
“It’s just the wind,” Jonathan breathed before looking at Nancy. “Don’t worry. My mom, she said the lights speak when it comes.”
“Speak?” She asked.
“Like, think of them as alarms,” He said. She looked up before she continued to wrap his arm.
“Is this too tight?” She asked with a certain look in your eyes that told you that now was a good time to go get a glass of water.
You stood up and began walking to the kitchen when a loud and repetitive banging on the door almost made you fall to the ground from fear.
“Jonathan!” Steve’s voice called. You turned to look at the couple on the couch with confusion. “Are you there, man? It’s-It’s Steve! Listen, I just want to talk!”
You whipped the door open to see a bloodied Steve standing on the porch.
“What are you doing here?!” You hissed.
“He-Y/N? I could as you the same-“
“You need to leave, Steve!” You urged.
“I’m not trying to start anything, okay?”
“I don’t care about that. You need to-“
“No, no, no. Listen, I messed up, okay? I messed up! I messed up. Okay?” His voice raised before it fell into almost a whimper. “Really. Please. I just want to make things right. Starting with you.”
“You’re forgiven!” You said quickly, making him furrow his brows with confusion. “I don’t have time for your excuses. I need you to leave! You have no idea what you just-“
“No, no excuses! Please- just.. Please?” He looked sincerely into your eyes with his own warm gaze. You hated to admit it, but you almost forgot why you were kicking him out to begin with. “What I said about you.. Y/N, I’m so sorry. I had no right. I told them I took you home and they took it as something it wasn’t and hyped me up for it so-so I played along.”
“Steve-“
“Wait. Let me finish,” He shook his head, keeping his eyes on yours as he continued. “I told them that I lied about the whole thing, okay? I told them that I never took you home in that way… I’m sorry, Y/N..”
You furrowed your brows before he leaned his forehead against the doorframe and pouted, making you smile. You all of the sudden understood why Nancy liked him. Strictly from a physical standpoint, of course. You had to cut her some slack; he was very handsome.
“You don’t have to forgive me. I just wanted to let you know that your name is cleared up. Now, could you please let me talk to Jonathan? Please. Ple-..” His gaze caught your bandage and his voice trailed off. “Wh-.. Hey, what happened to your arm?”
He looked up with genuine concern before pulling your arm in for a closer look. You really understood her fascination with that look in his eyes.
“Is that blood?” He muttered. You yanked your arm back.
“It’s nothing!” You said a little too eagerly. “It was an accident.
“Yeah? What’s going on?” He frowned.
“Nothing, Steve. Just leave-“
“Wait a sec. Did he do this to you? Where’s Nancy? Is she hurt too?” He raised his voice, pushing against the door.
“No!” You tried to keep it closed but he out-powered you.
“Y/N, let me in!”
“Nancy? A little help here?!” You called as he pushed the door open. “No. No! No, Steve!”
“What is this- What the fuck-“ He stammered as he looked around at your set up. Nancy and Jonathan were on their feet.
“You need to get out of here!” Jonathan rushed up to him.
“Woah, woah- What is all-“
“Steve, listen to him!”
“I’m not asking you! I’m telling you, get out of here!” Jonathan continued, pushing against his chest.
“What is that smell?” Steve began yelling as he realized just how bad this whole scene was. “Is that gasoline?!
“Steve, get out!” Nancy said pulling up a handgun.
“Nancy, what the fuck?!” You gasped.
“W-wa-wait- WHAT?!” Steve shouted. “What is going on?!”
“You have five seconds to get out of here!” She ordered.
“Okay, is this a joke? Stop. Put the gun down!”
“Nancy-“ You urged.
“I’m doing this for you, Steve.”
“CAN WE JUST CALM DOWN?!” You finally cried. “Put the damn gun down. It’s too late for him to leave. He’s in on this now.”
“Wait. What? In on what?”
“I’m gonna need you to trust me, okay?” You turned to him. He drew in a breath before you interrupted him again.
“Trust you?! I’m literally at gunpoint-“
“STEVE!” You shouted. “You trusted me once. I’m gonna need you to do it again because all of our lives depend on this. Trust me. Trust us.”
He looked over at Nancy and watched as she put the gun down before he nodded.
“Okay, I promise I’ll explain everything as soon as we’re done here but until then? No questions, alright? No time. We’re in danger. Real danger. Look at me,” You placed your hand on his chest to get his attention, gaining his wide eyed gaze. He took the bat you handed him. “There’s a bear trap in the hallway, make sure not to step on it. It’ll shatter your leg. Here’s the important part: stay two steps behind me at all times, and follow every order I give you, got it? I’m just going to need you to fight like hell with us if you wanna live-“
“Y/N,” Nancy muttered from behind you. You turned around and grabbed the other bat. “The lights.”
They began to flicker all around you. Under any other circumstances, you’d dare to call it a beautiful sight. But in that moment, it was the scariest thing you’d ever seen.
“Oh, God. It’s here,” You whispered.
“What? What’s here?!” Steve shouted.
“Where is it?” Nancy pressed her back against Jonathan as they spun around looking for the monster.
“Where is what?!”
“Steve, no questions! Put your back against mine! Now!” You shouted. He followed your orders. “You see anything?”
“No!”
You all pressed against one another, looking around anxiously. It felt like an eternity of anticipation before the wall began to crumble before you. Nancy began shooting at it.
“RUN!” You screamed, feeling Steve’s hand grab at your waist and pull you away instinctively. You grabbed his wrist and pulled him behind you as you ran into the hallway. “JUMP!”
You both jumped over the bear trap with Jonathan and Nancy hot on your heels.
“OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD!” Steve shrieked from behind you.
You pulled him into Will’s room and waited for Jonathan and Nancy to come through before slamming it shut.
“JESUS! JESUS!” He turned to you. “What the hell was that?!”
“Shut up!” You all shouted just as the monster screeched in the hallway. Nancy pointed the gun towards the door, Jonathan held his lighter, and you kept your bat up, ready to swing at any given moment. Steve did the same with his. You all panted from fear as it continued to taunt you outside of the door.
“What’s it doing?” Nancy asked.
“I don’t know,” Jonathan breathed.
“Some predators like to play with their pray before killing it,” You whispered, earning a quick and dirty glance from Nancy. “You asked!”
She scoffed before you all returned to looking at the yellow yo-yo, waiting for the beast to step into your trap. The electricity around you jolted around you, making it hard to keep an eye on the yo-yo. Then the lights went back to normal as a piercing silence fell upon the house. You all paused and looked at one another.
“You hear anything?” Nancy asked, looking at Jonathan.
“No,” He said, putting down the lighter’s lid and reaching for the door.
“What are you doing?” Steve hissed. “It might be playing with us!”
“Or it’s gone,” Nancy huffed before Jonathan opened the door. He stepped out slowly; you all followed behind him, looking around only to see an empty house. You made your way out of the hallway and into the living room, scanning every inch of the premises for any signs of life.
“This is crazy. This is crazy. This is crazy. This is crazy! This is CRAZY! THIS IS CRAZY!” Steve lunged for the phone, pressing three number before dialing. Nancy walked up and took it out of his hand, smashing it against the wall. “What are you doing?! Are you insane?”
“It’s going to come back!” She shouted. “So you need to leave. Right. Now.”
He blinked before dashing to the door and slamming it behind him. You all scoffed, looking at one another with annoyed expressions at his cowardice, but you barely had a moment to recollect yourselves before the lights began to flicker again. You all pressed your backs to one another, twirling around in an effort to try to get a glimpse of it.
“Where is it?” Nancy gasped.
“Come on,” Jonathan muttered. “Come on, you son of a bitch!”
“You see it?!” You called, looking everywhere yet nowhere at once as the lights flickered before it suddenly went black.
Only the sounds of your breathing bounced through the room as you tried to listen for any of the monster’s sounds. It wasn’t until you heard a low growl from directly in front of you that you realized one thing; you were it’s next victim.
“Y/N!” Your friends shouted from behind you. You swung your bat, hitting the monster as hard as you could. It almost reacted as if you’d hit it with a pool noodle, only getting angrier with every swing. Finally, it knocked you off of your feet and you landed on your back with a thud before you felt the heavy weight of the monster on top of you.
You felt it slowly crawl on top of you, feeling its moist skin secretions lubricate your body. You felt your breathing pick up to an unhealthy rate as it’s head finally hovered over your own. It didn’t even have eyes. It’s entire head was occupied by its flower-shaped mouth. It opened it to show you just how big it could get.
You looked into the mouth of the beast, feeling it’s hot breath and seeing as it salivated over you. It was craving the blood you’d taunted it with. It’s spit began dripping on your face as it got closer and closer. A cold chill ran down your body, bringing on goosebumps and the racing of your heart.
“Y/N! NO! Y/N!” Jonathan shouted, lifting the bat you’d dropped.
“Don’t attack it,” You choked out through the fear. “Run.”
It let out another growl of excitement as it expanded its mouth. It didn’t even have a head. It was just mouth. You let out a sob and clenched your eyes shut, prepping for the nothingness that was bound to ensue.
“GO TO HELL, YOU SON OF A BITCH!” Nancy shouted before firing off her pistol. Then the beast released you from its clutches and arose to face her. She continued to fire a series of shots at its chest and head to no avail. It seemed to only get more angry. You scrambled back, grabbing your bat from Jonathan’s grip.
The sound of the gun firing was replaced with only clicking. She was out of bullets. You hopped to your feet, ready to land more blows before you heard a grunt and a thud. You looked up to see Steve swinging his bat, landing and dodging blows alike. Finally, he struck it hard, sending it stumble back. You ran up and hit it with all of your force, making it stumble straight into the trap.
“HE’S IN THE TRAP!” Steve shouted.
“HE’S STUCK!” Nancy screamed.
“NOW, JONATHAN! NOW!” You cried.
He struck the lighter before throwing it onto the carpet, sending it up into flames along with the monster. It screeched in pain as you felt the heat of the fire hit you. You covered your face and wrapped an around your best friend as the boys stepped forward to shield you from the heat.
You watched for only a moment longer before Jonathan grabbed the fire extinguisher and put out the flames. You all began coughing as the lights turned back on around you, revealing the heavy amount of smoke in the house. You all panted as you approached the trap.
Only there was nothing in it.
“Where’d it go?” Nancy asked.
“It has to be dead,” Jonathan panted. “It has to be.”
“Guys,” You muttered, pointing up. The string of light bulbs down the hallway began to illuminate one by one, unlike that the erratic light show from before. You all stepped back as the lights approached you. Steve stayed in front of you all, holding his bat in a ready position. You all breathed heavily as you watched it stop and return back to where it came from.
You followed it into the kitchen before Jonathan let out a breath. “Mom? Is that you?”
The light eventually gave out as the presence exited the house. You followed it into the porch, watching as the light post out front began to flicker as well.
“Where’s it going?” Nancy asked.
“I don’t think that’s the monster,” You breathed, earning their gazes. “I think it’s them.”
“Well, what now?” She breathed. You let out a sigh, dropping your bat before taking her into your arms. She didn’t hesitate to return the embrace. You didn’t have to say anything or explain the sudden burst of affection. She knew that it was your way of saying thank you for saving your life. And her hug said the same.
You all sat around in the living room for about an hour before you heard sirens rushing every which way in Hawkins. Somehow, you all knew the fight was over. Hopper made his way to the house to let you know Will made it to the hospital alive and that he’d be alright. Nancy insisted on riding with Jonathan alone, leaving you to hitch a ride with Steve.
“What you did tonight,” You said as soon as Steve put the car into park. He looked over at you to see your gaze was locked on the illuminated Hawkins Emergency Room sign. “You could’ve just as easily drove away, but you chose to come inside and fight. I don’t think we would be alive right now if it wasn’t for you.”
“Why was-uh.. Why was Nancy just standing there shooting at that thing anyway?” He asked, shifting his weight to face you.
“She was trying to distract it because it was on top of me,” You whispered, making his lips part. “It was so close that I could feel it’s breath a-and see every pour in its skin. When it opened its mouth, I-I couldn’t do anything besides close my eyes and just.. wait.”
“Jesus,” He breathed, shaking his head.
“I was so sure. I was already thinking about how my mom and brother would react to the news. But then she started shooting,” You wiped at your cheek, letting out a breathy chuckle before finally turning to look at him. “She’s the most selfless person I know, Steve. And up until today, I always thought she was way too good for you. But you really proved yourself tonight. If you still want her as much as I think you do, I’ll put in a good word for you.”
“Seriously?” He grinned.
“Yeah,” You chuckled. “Seriously.”
“Wait.. Does this mean we’re friends again, Henderson?” He dragged out his words.
“Do you really think that I’d be friends with someone who puts Like A Virgin on a make out cassette?” You teased, making him throw his head back in laughter. “Keep dreaming, Harrington. That ship sailed a long time ago.”
“Yeah, we’ll see about that,” He chuckled as you both opened your doors to head into the hospital. “I have a way of rubbing off on people.”
“Oh, is that so?” You laughed. “Makes sense. Making a good first impression was never really your strong suit.”
“True. But I’ve rubbed off on you before,” He smirked.
“Oh please! That was totally different!” You rolled your eyes.
“How so?” He laughed. “Because we were kids? Or because it resulted in sharing our first kisses together?”
“Both!” You shook your head, laughing along with him. “Don’t tell Nancy about that.”
“No way!” He stopped, looking at you with an amused smile. “You never told her?”
“We said it was a practice run and swore we’d never tell anyone,” You turned to face him.
“You stuck to your promise? After all of this time?” He asked softly.
“Well, yeah,” You shrugged. “You didn’t?”
“Hell no,” He scoffed. “I bragged about that kiss for like a year.”
“Huh, so he’s arrogant and a promise breaker,” You smirked, making him chuckle. “Remind me again why I’m putting a good word in for you?”
“Something about saving your life?” He stepped forward, tilting his head and looking down at you with the same smug smile.
“Oh, yeah,” You mocked his facial expression, pushing him away by his chest. He laughed again.
“Wait up, Jonathan!” You heard around the corner. You both turned just in time to see Jonathan jog around the corner of the hospital with Nancy hot on his heels. They both smiled when they saw you. “We left before you! How’d you beat us here?”
“Have you seen the way Steve drives?” You smiled as you all fell into step with one another as you walked into the building. “It’s like he has nine lives or something.”
“Hey! Not true!”
Once you all made your way up to the waiting room, you and Nancy ran into the arms of your brothers, noticing they were a bit despondent. You later found out it was because of the fact that they saw Eleven’s heroic sacrifice in the high school’s science lab.
You all sat anxiously in the waiting room for hours as you waiting for someone to come fetch the boys so they could talk to their friend. In the meantime, you took your usual seat next to Nancy. You took her hand into your own and squeezed. She smiled at you, allowing her tired head to drop on your shoulder. Your brother sat next to you, he placed his head in your lap and fell fast asleep.
No one spoke a word.
You began to doze off before you heard Mike shout, “Guys! Will is up! Will is up!”
The boys all darted into the hospital room.
“We should go and make sure they behave,” Nancy told you. You nodded, rubbing the sleep out of your eyes before standing up and following behind them. It was sweet, watching them all excitedly rant to their old friend. You were so invested in their conversation that you didn’t even notice Nancy was gone until Jonathan turned around.
“Oh, hey, Y/N,” He smiled.
“Hey,” You bumped his shoulder with yours, wincing at the pain that shot through you. “Fuck, I forgot about that.”
“I mean, at least we’ll have cool matching scars now,” He smiled.
“Yeah, matching tattoos are for losers,” You agreed, making him chuckle. “So how is he? And your mom?”
“My mom made it out without a scratch and Will’s going to make a full recovery.”
“Thank God,” You let out a breath. “How about you?”
“I feel like I should be asking you that instead.”
“Well, I enough nightmare fuel for a lifetime but other than that?” You shrugged. “I’m mostly okay.”
“Well, then, I’m mostly happy to hear that,” He said. You smiled, placing a gentle hand on his arm before telling Dustin it was time to go.
— 6 MONTHS LATER —
“Ooh, I like this song! Is it new?” Robin looked over at you from the passenger’s seat of your new car.
“Yeah, my mom got me Foreigner’s new album on cassette for Christmas. This is called I Want To Know What Love Is,” You grinned. “Isn’t it good? It’s my favorite from this album.”
“God, you’re so lucky! She got you this new car and a cassette? My parents just gave me ugly sweaters!” She ran her hand over your dashboard in awe, making you laugh.
“It’s not new! It’s almost ten years old,” You laughed as you admired your step dad’s old 1976 Baby Blue Ford Bronco. He told her to give it to you when you got your license but she decided to wait until Christmas Eve since it was at around the same time.
“Jesus, Dustin is taking forever. You might have to run in there,” She frowned.
“Yeah, I’ll be back,” You sighed, hopping out of the car as soon as another one pulled in. You smiled, watching as Jonathan stepped out and jogged to catch up to you. “You here for your little brother too?”
“Yeah, my mom’s almost done with dinner. Woah! Is this yours?” He asked with wide eyes, rubbing a hand over the hood of the SUV.
“Yup! My mom gave it to be today,” You grinned before you both began heading towards the Wheeler’s front door. “It was my step dad’s.”
“Oh, I thought it looked familiar!” He knocked on the door. “That’s pretty cool! Guess you won’t be asking me for any more rides from school then?”
“Don’t you worry, this baby breaks down on the regular,” You chuckled, patting his back. “Can’t get rid of me that easily!”
“Damn it,” He snapped his fingers in a fake and playful frustration as the door opened.
“Hey, kiddos! My goodness, you two make a handsome couple,” Mrs. Wheeler grinned.
“Oh- we’re not-“
“Oh, uh. No, it’s like that that-“
You both looked at one another and laughed before you both said, “We’re just friends.”
“Well, the boys are in the basement,” She smiled, stepping aside to let you in. You said your thank you’s before making your way to the basement, making jokes about her comment and giggling at the wild idea.
“Geez, what’s that smell?” Jonathan smiled as he walked down the stairs. “You guys been playing games all day or just farting?”
The kids erupted into a fit of giggles, blaming on and the other for the smell before both Will and Dustin grabbed their bags and followed you back upstairs.
“Hey, kids!” Mrs. Wheeler greeted again. “Wish your moms a merry Christmas for me, okay?”
“Yeah, thank you!”
“Merry Christmas to you, too!” You said sweetly before turning and heading to the door.
“Hey! Jonathan! Y/N! Wait up!” Nancy called as she ran downstairs, carrying two gifts and handing them to you both. “Merry Christmas.”
“Hold on, I got yours in here somewhere,” You grinned, digging in your backpack until you got the small box. You’d gotten a job and saved up to get Nancy a gold necklace, Jonathan a leather wallet, and you’d given Robin a silver ring as well. You handed them both their own gifts, leaving Jonathan stammering.
“Uh- Thanks,” He breathed. “Um, I-I didn’t get you guys anything. I-I feel bad.”
“I got something for Steve too, could you give it to him if you see him?” You asked.
“He’s in the living room,” She giggled. You nodded before heading over there and seeing him on the couch. He sat up a little straighter when he saw you.
“Hey, Y/N!” He smiled. You tossed him the gift. He scrambled to catch it but finally stabilized it in his hands before furrowing his brows. “What’s this?”
You looked over at Nancy’s father before smiling and waving Steve into the hallway. He gladly followed.
“It’s a proper mixtape for you and Nancy to listen to when you’re together,” You whispered. His lips part before they pulled up into a smile of his own. “I guess it’s my gift to the both of you.”
“You’re kidding,” He threw his head back in laughter, opening it to reveal a cassette with a multitude of songs written in your handwriting on the paper inside and the words Stancy’s Mixtape written in cursive on the front. “I can’t believe you remembered!”
“What? That you put Madonna and Cindy Lauper on a make out playlist? Oh, you are never living that one down,” You smirked, making him chuckle. You looked down to explain the cassette and missed the way his eyes never left your face. “It’s got a lot of songs she told me that she liked and some I think you might like too. I wrote them all right here. Except for the last one. That one’s a surprise.”
“So does this mean we’re friends again?“ He looked into your eyes with a playful smile. You shook your head. “Bullshit! I think I’m starting to rub off on you. Because this seems like a very friendly gift from someone who doesn’t consider me as a friend.”
“Think of this as a thank you. You saved our lives so this is me saving your relationship. I think if that poor girl has to listen to Don’t Stop Believing one more time with your tongue down her throat, she’s going to rip her hair out.”
“Wh- She told me she liked that one!”
“She lied,” You shrugged, making him chuckle again. He looked at you in a way that made chills run down your spine. Surely it was nothing more than an admirable look from a friend, but the way his eyes danced around your face always made you nervous.
There was an odd tension between the two of you ever since that night six months ago. There were times you acted like friends, others where you acted like you absolutely hated one another. Then there were moments like these, where you’d both look into each other’s eyes like there was nothing else in the world you’d rather look at. But you always interrupted them by looking away and respecting the fact that this boy was nothing more to you than your friend’s boyfriend.
“Anyways,” You looked at your feet for a moment before looking back up. “I should probably-“
“Yeah, yeah, of course!” He blinked, before taking one last look at the mixtape and shooting you one last smile. “Thank you. I really appreciate this. Merry Christmas, Y/N.”
“Merry Christmas, Steve,” You placed a relaxed hand on his arm before heading back to the foyer to see Nancy placing a quick kiss on Jonathan’s cheek. You gave her a quick hug and made your way back to the Bronco with your brother.
“Do I get this car when I turn 16?” He asked you.
“Probably,” You shrugged. “I want to go to Columbia for college. There’s not much of a need for cars in New York City.”
“Yes!” He grinned. “Wait- NEW YORK CITY?! That’s like twelve hours away!”
“Exactly,” You laughed. You continued to argue about the fact that Columbia was simply too far away in Dustin’s opinion and not far enough in yours until you got home after dropping Robin off at her house. “-Dustin, it would only be for four years!”
“Then what?”
“Then I’d probably move to Europe,” You smirked.
“MOM!” He shouted as he ran into the house. “Y/N said she hates us!”
“Not true!” You darted after him. “I told him I want to go to Columbia University.”
“In New York City?!” Your mother gasped dramatically, making you laugh. “I think that’s amazing, sweetie! I’ll help pay for it if you get scholarships.”
“What?!” Dustin shouted as the doorbell rang. “I feel like this is a discussion we should have as a family!”
“Is that the friend you were expecting?” Your mother smiled as she set the table.
“We’re having a guest?” Your brother asked.
“Yeah, he didn’t have any family around to celebrate with so I invited him,” You nodded, heading to the front door and opening it to reveal Eddie. “Hey, you! Merry Christmas.”
“Merry Christmas, sweetheart,” He smiled, checking over your shoulder to make sure no one was around before pulling you in for a quick and gentle kiss. “Thanks for inviting me.”
“Of course,” You felt a blush creep into your cheeks from the kiss. God, you liked kissing him. “No one should be alone on Christmas.”
“Eddie? He’s our guest?” Dustin questioned from behind you with a smile. “Oh my god!! Best. Christmas. Ever.”
You invited him in before you all sat around the table and ate your food. You proceeded to watch the movie Eddie had brought from home; How The Grinch Stole Christmas. You waited for both your mother and brother called it a night before you snuck him into your room and had a second celebration of your own. Maybe Dustin was onto something: this Christmas was the one for the books.
