The 2024 Gender Census is now open!

[ Link to survey ]

The 11th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 13th June 2024.

It’s short and easy, about 5 minutes probably.

Title: Gender Census 2024.

Text: If you can't easily put yourself into just one of these two boxes, you are invited to take part.

Two boxes, one green malachite with a Venus symbol on it, one pink rhodochrosite with a Mars symbol on it.

After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.

If you think you might have friends and followers who’d be interested, please do reblog this blog post, and share the survey URL by email or at AFK social groups or on other social networks. Every share is extremely helpful - it’s what helped us get 40,000 responses last year.

Survey URL: https://survey.gendercensus.com

The survey is open to anyone anywhere who speaks English and feels that the gender binary doesn’t fully describe their experience of themselves and their gender(s) or lack thereof.

For the curious, you can also spy on some graphs and demographic data for the incoming responses here.

Thank you so much!

Happy International Museums Day to the following people:

The guy who called me the Whore of Babylon for teaching kids about Ancient Egypt as I stood there and nodded.

The woman who was deeply incensed that staff wouldn't open the cases so she could touch the organic objects.

The one guy who made me translate hieroglyphs on a stele for him, then was mad because it didn't say what he wanted it to say, and reported me for 'lying' to the public.

The parents who objected to the taxidermied animals having taxidermied genitalia because it was unseemly.

Those kids on a school trip who got on the floor in front of a mummy and started chanting 'we worship Ra' as their teacher desperately tried to get them to leave.

That one guy who...uh...really liked geodes. No, they were not a special interest. He really, really liked geodes.

Propaganda For Chef (Vincenzo):
Propaganda For Chef (Vincenzo):
Tumblr
Ok so here is my summary of how to be a successful Ringbearer: First and most obviously: how good a character would be at travelling to and

Propaganda for Chef (Vincenzo):

If he had help from friends he could probably get to Mordor just fine. On his own I don't think he'd be skilled enough. He does have friends though so that should work out. He could maybe be tempted with giving Gwynne a better life or something, other than trying for that he generally seems pretty happy to just go with whatever life throws at him.

Propaganda for Tad Cooper:

In bearded dragon form he could maybe be smuggled into Mordor by a buddy but Richard's not the most capable man. As a dragon he could just fly in, stealth and need for directions be damned. Dragons in Middle Earth are notoriously difficult to kill so he wouldn't be in much danger. As a dragon though he probably couldn't carry the ring unless he could carry someone on his back and they carry the ring. He doesn't seem to want much from life though other than to look out for loved ones so tempting him would be hard.
