Don't buy/let your family buy the automatic self-cleaner litterboxes that are being heavily advertised currently ! They're cute, but they're badly designed and have actually killed several cats !

They are sold under several brand names, but if you type "deadly self-cleaning litterbox" you'll find sources on the matter and images of the litterbox in question. The youtube channel One Man Five Cats also exposed how dangerous the thing is and demonstrates with inanimate object how the accidents happened, so check it out if you want more info on it.
