enough episodes of protocol are out, let’s stop wasting our time and get to the REAL questions
Would you mind talking more about your distinctions between horror and adjacent genres you mentioned?
Horror, more than any other genre, requires deft control of tone and pacing. These are maybe the two hardest things to practice when it comes to writing. Its all in knowing how to build and release tension at exactly the right moments. That takes real practice. Horror is the pastry baking of genre writing.
If tone and pacing aren't balanced, the sauce breaks. You end up with "Adventure fiction but there's vampires." As if the mere presence of a vampire makes a story horror. Hence why every "horror" podcast past it's initial runtime turns into a shounen with a coat of Lovecraft paint. Aren't my superpowers fucked up and saddddddd fuuuuuck.
Or, you end up with half of the booktok horror genre. People poorly emulating Chuck Palahniuk, going for pure balls to the walls shock value with none of Chucks style, skill, or emotional depth. Like, people putting infant cannibalism into their novels just so it can generate internet buzz. Literary Saw movies but without the gonzo self indulgence.
