i think one of the hardest things about learning a new language and getting to a level where you can actually talk about complex topics or current events is the lack of cultural knowledge you have because often you can’t just *literally* translate something as you would say it in your own language because if you do that, it takes on a whole other (often problematic or even unknowingly racist) meaning… like you don’t know the connotations of those words for native speakers and it’s not actually that easy to find out what the right words are
