Alternate Hail Marys

The modern Hail Mary was birthed in the sixteenth century; prior to this, the Hail Mary existed both as shortened versions of the modern one, and with completely different structures. The earliest form of the prayer, dating to the twelfth century, was simply “Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb”, itself a combination of two Biblical verses that have been used together since the seventh century. By the beginning of the fourteenth century, the name “Jesus” was added to the end (in case you weren’t sure who Mary’s son was, I guess?). But this wasn’t the only “Hail Mary” being circulated among the Catholic laity and monastic orders. In fact, there are a number of German and Latin Marian psalters and early rosary forms that were composed of 150 different Ave Marias each! Here are a couple of examples of some of these other Hail Marys. “Hail Mary, rose without thorns, You were born to comfort me. A queen of high birth, help me that I shall not be lost.” (13th Century) “Hail Mary, branch of Jesse, From you came the Noble One, Jesus, your Child, whose sweet Name Took away from us all our sins.” (late 13th, early 14th Century) “I greet you, rose garden of heaven, The chosen, the pure, the tender one. You noble, sweet rose blossom, Entreat God for me through your goodness.” (14th Century) These different Hail Mary’s were usually correlated to one of the psalms; the prayer would attempt to summarize the theme of a particular psalm, and then connect that theme to Mary or Jesus. “Hail Mary” devotions like this would continue to be composed up until the seventeenth century, but the sheer diversity found even within a single devotion made it hard to memorize; the modern rosary, with its singular form of the Hail Mary and its focus on the narrative of Christ’s life, was much easier to perform without having a written text in front of the devotee. Hate diet culture so much bitches will b like “don’t eat processed carbs they’re so bad for you” like and??? So what?? God did not give us grain and stone to grind it with for no reason. Bread is inevitable. Bread is food for the heart and the soul. U think I’m gonna give that up in pursuit of instagram fitness?? U think I’m gonna deny myself the simple pleasure of toast with jam so I can endlessly chase an ever-shifting standard of beauty that ultimately means nothing? In 20 years I will no longer be beautiful and in 60 my body will be vacant food for other, smaller creatures. But the taste of fresh bread? Of homemade donuts and still-warm pie? I will carry the taste on my tongue into whatever follows this life. So like. Stop telling me I should diet lmao. I’m not abt to martyr myself just to get a man to look at me.

[image description: books, PDFs, and podcasts aimed towards white Christians and/or sharing the theologies and insights of of people of color, all of which can be found in the doc linked below. The last image reads, “Reminder for white Christians! While self-education and education of our communities is a vital step, it is only the first step in anti-racism. Being ‘woke’ means nothing if we do not then take action. So check out some of these resources, educate yourself, educate your people, AND start doing the hard work of justice!! That means joining and supplying protests, speaking out online and in real life, voting, and elevating the voices of BIPOC within our churches and elsewhere.” /end id]

___________

Many incredible anti-racist resource lists are going around (like this one, this one, and this one) - but none that I’ve seen have offered Christian-specific / church-specific resources.

So I’ve created a google doc with resources cultivated particularly for white Christians who want to do the work to recognize their own racism and strive towards anti-racism for themselves and for their communities. The doc has way more resources listed than just those pictured here.

If you have ideas for additional resources - books, articles, sites, podcasts, the social media accounts of BIPOC, and more - please let me know!
