“Wei Ying.”

The cup slipped from your grasp, forgotten in your shock. He was alive, he was here.

“How?” You gaped at him, not even blinking as the cup shattered against the floor.

Wei Wuxian gazed back at you wordlessly, then turned away. He was going to run, find somewhere he’d never hurt anyone and he would never have to face you again, he was going to—a firm grip on this wrist held him fast. Your hand. Wei Wuxian swallowed the lump in his throat, and mustered up a cheeky smile.

“Hello there. I’m sorry, I seem to have gotten lost on my way,” he said, aiming for nonchalance, but his voice cracked at the last syllable.

“Where have you been?” You whispered. “It’s been years, I thought you were gone.”

Wei Wuxian couldn’t meet your eyes. He searched the ground beneath your feet, eyes landing on the shattered remnants of your teacup, as he struggled to find the right words. One hand came up to nervously rub his nose.
