âItâs hand-holding season.â
He says it so matter-of-factly that you donât question him. Youâve been roommates with Yoongi for almost a year now, and heâs always dropping these little tidbits of knowledge, sprinkling them in at random as you go about your days together.
âBack in the 17th century, they paid taxes with rice,â he informs you as he prepares a delicious meal of bibimbap for lunch for the two of you, topping it with a perfectly fried egg.
âDid you know that âwhisky' means âwater of life?ââ he inquires as he pours you a nightcap, which you share on your balcony overlooking the small, busy neighborhood where your apartment resides.
âThe first oranges ever grown werenât actually orange,â he comments as he peels a tangerine, offering you the first slice as always.
Yoongi is many things, but a liar isnât one of them. Heâs overflowing with this obscure trivia, and you long ago stopped doubting that his facts were true. So when he announces itâs hand-holding season and reaches out, you assume itâs some weird winter tradition youâre not familiar with, not being from this area, and accept his hand.
But itâs not just that one moment. No, Yoongi grabs your hand all the time now. On the couch. In line for the bus. At dinner with your friends, all of whom seem unable to stop grinning every time they look at you. Weirdos. Your fingers interlace as he tugs you to his side everywhere you go.
Itâs a little awkward at first. Itâs been so long since someone held your hand that youâd almost forgotten the way it feels, palm pressed against palm, fingers curling around each other. But you get used to it, and before long youâre the one extending a hand, grasping, seeking him out.
âWhy are you two holding hands?â Jungkook queries one movie night with your friends, sprawled out on the floor in front of the couch where you sit by Yoongiâs side. The movie is paused while you wait for Hobi to return from his kitchen with more snacks. Namjoon looks up from his perch on Hobiâs armchair, eyes going wide at Jungkookâs question.
âBecause itâs hand-holding season,â you answer succinctly, sipping on your hot cider.
âHand-holding⊠season?â
âYeah, Jungkook, you know. That time of year when you hold hands. Hand-holding season. Itâs pretty self-explanatory,â Yoongi jumps in, looking at Jungkook.
Jungkook nods slowly. âRight⊠forgot about that one.â
A week later, standing in a cluster with your friends at the bar, listening to some local band perform a mind-boggling mashup of âWhat Child Is This?â and âSweet Child OâMine,â Yoongi excuses himself from the group to get you another drink. His hand drops from yours as he pulls away, and out of the corner of your eye, you catch Jimin and Taehyung snickering.
âWhat?â you inquire, frowning as you realize they were laughing at you. You lower your head, eyes narrowing to thin slits as you glare at your friends, waiting.
âNothing,â Jimin insists, but you arenât convinced and only after threatening to expose his deepest, darkest secret (he didnât break his nose two years ago after getting into a fight defending your honor at a party; he just got so drunk that he ran into a glass door) does he continue, âItâs just⊠the hand-holding. Itâs cute! But like⊠you know thatâs not a thing, right?â
âWhat do you mean, itâs not a âthing?â Itâs some sort of local winter custom or something. Isnât it?â Your voice falters as you catch the look on their faces.
âSweetie,â Taehyung begins, his voice kind, almost pitying, âno. He just wants to hold your hand.â
Thereâs no time to process this before Yoongi returns. He clasps your hand and you stare at where your fingers are laced with his, wondering.
The night rolls on and eventually your friends drift off. Soon itâs only you and Yoongi, but once he sees you fighting to stifle a yawn and failing miserably, you head out into the snowy night, homebound.
Snowflakes swirl around you on the trek home, but the air feels heavy with something else. Something unspoken. Everything around you is covered in a fluffy white blanket that shimmers slightly under the streetlights, and you could easily get lost on these streets just as easily as you get lost in your thoughts. But that familiar sensation at your side, Yoongiâs fingers clutching yours, reassures you. Itâs a comforting weight, anchoring you in the moment.
Back inside your place, you collapse on the couch, wrapping a velvety throw around you as Yoongi brings you both some water. He sits next to you, hand seeking yours immediately. He natters on about something someone did at work but youâre not listening, thinking about Taehyungâs words.
âYoongi,â you interrupt him, and his mouth draws into a straight line as he waits to hear what could be so important that youâd cut him off. âWhat other seasons should I know about?â
He cocks his head questioningly. âHuh?â
âItâs hand-holding season,â you state. âWhatâs next?â
His face remains blank. But heâs quiet a little too long, so you go on.
âIs cuddle season next?â you ask, sliding closer to him until your thighs touch. He peers at you through hooded eyes, swallowing before speaking. âIt could be. Iâm not sure. Iâd have to check.â
âMmm,â you reply, nudging his arm with your own until he lifts it. Nuzzling into him, head resting on his shoulder as his arm falls into place around you, you sigh contentedly. âIf it isnât, it should be.â
Yoongi is uncharacteristically silent for once, but his fingers rub soothing circles on your side as he holds you close.
âYoongi,â you murmur after a moment, voice muffled by his hoodie. Tilting your face up, you peer at your roommate. âI should probably go to bed.â
His dark eyes contain several shades of brown, you realize, with tiny golden flecks glimmering as he gazes warmly at you. From so close, theyâre even more beautiful than you thought.
âYeah, probably a good idea,â he mumbles after a minute, and you rise and bid him goodnight.
Glancing over your shoulder as you pad towards your bedroom, you spy him still on the couch, his fingers tracing gingerly over the spot you just vacated, as if he is searching for your hand even now.
In the morning, Yoongi finds you waiting for him in the kitchen, a mug of coffee ready exactly how he likes it (black). He thanks you, and you wait for him to take a few sips, letting the caffeine jumpstart his brain before you speak.
âSo, I figured it out,â you announce excitedly.
âYou figured it out?â he repeats, brow furrowing.
Nodding, you grab his hand, weaving your fingers together as you tug him towards the hallway by the door.
âI looked it up while you were sleeping. Itâs kissing season next.â
You point up. He does a double take, noticing something tiny and green hanging overhead.
A clump of spinach, tied together with kitchen string, dangling haphazardly from a heating vent.
âWhy is the spinach for our lunch hanging from the ceiling?â
âI told you, kissing season is coming! But⊠we donât have any mistletoe. So I had to make do.â You beam at your roommate as he stares at you, blinking sluggishly, the gears slowly clicking into place.
âKissing season.â
âYes.â
âAnd you determined thisâŠâ
âWhen I looked it up this morning. Online,â you proclaim, embellishing your lie.
âOnline.â His eyebrow quivers minutely, as if he wishes to challenge you, but his expression remains vacant.
âYes.â
âAnd it said kissing season comes after hand-holding season.â
You giggle. âDo you need a little more coffee, sleepyhead? Yes, thatâs what it said. I couldnât find anything about cuddle season. It said to prepare for kissing. So, voila!â You gesture over his head. âI think weâre ready, donât you?â
Yoongi doesnât respond. His face gives nothing away.
So you wait, humming to yourself, hands folded behind your back.
Until he finally breaks.
âI canât believe you bought it for so long,â he laughs, and you shove him away playfully.
âHey! Youâre no better, thinking you had to make up a stupid excuse to hold my hand.â
He grabs your hand again, thumb tracing lightly over your knuckles. âSo I donât need one?â
âNo, dumbass,â you chide affectionately. âYou never did.â
The sweet gummy smile youâve always adored spreads across his face, and you reach out for his other hand, pulling him closer.
âWeâre both just a couple of dumbasses, arenât we?â he mutters softly, nose brushing against yours. You loop both arms around his neck and nod.
âIâm afraid so,â you inform him with a sigh as his lips finally land on yours.
Kissing season, to your delight, never ends.

Itâs always a bit muggy in the flower shop. Namjoon says itâs better for the plants that way, but heâs not the one stuck behind the counter all day. And you regularly remind him of that.Â
âYou know, you could help me with the bouquets,â he counters you, disappearing into the aisles of succulents and large houseplants.Â
For some reason, you never take him up on his offer. Perhaps itâs because you like watching him work on the bouquets from across the store. His dimples come out when he purses his lips in concentration, expertly selecting and trimming the flowers. He typically sends you to the backroom to select a vase, sometimes requesting a couple to choose from.Â
âI donât know how to do it,â you say, cradling two large terracotta vases in your arms. Itâs better that you hold onto them; you canât count on both hands how many times Namjoon has dropped them.Â
âEh, you just make it up.â Namjoon takes the taller vase and gently eases in a dozen red roses. How very cliche. âEveryone talks about all the science and meaning behind flowers, but I think itâs all bull.â Using a pair of special scissors, he clips off a stray thorn. âPeople just want something beautiful.âÂ
You donât have much to add to that, so you return the spare vase to the backroom. Itâs not your area of expertise, and it reminds you a lot of the zodiac signs. It all seems rather convoluted and arbitrary, so you suppose Namjoon is right. People do just want something beautiful.Â
Still, you find yourself staring at the poster Namjoon has taped to the surface of the counter next to the register. Itâs titled, âThe Language of Flowersâ, and you often trace your finger over the colorful drawings of different types of bouquets. The images are rather faded, but customers like reviewing the little chart to find meaning in the flowers they choose for their loved ones. One bouquet, in particular, is faded worse than the rest: the pink camellias.Â
The ring of the bell above the shopâs front door makes you pull your gaze away from the tattered poster. You catch sight of Namjoon in the corner of your eye. He comes around a rather large fiddle-leaf fig and gives the customer walking through the door a dimpled smile.Â
âHoseok hyung! I forgot itâs Thursday,â Namjoon greets the man cheerfully.Â
âYup!â The man lets the âpâ end with a pop.Â
From his appearance, you wouldnât expect him to be a model. Not that Hoseok isnât gorgeous, because he most certainly is. His long face, angular features, and sharp eyes make him stand out in any crowd, and although heâs got a beanie pulled almost completely over his forehead, you can still see his wavy locks curl from the nape of his neck - hair fit for a runway or a concert stage. Itâs just that heâs dressed so simply compared to most Thursdays, this time in a plain long-sleeve t-shirt and pinstriped slacks that look a bit baggy on him in a fashionable way.Â
âGot another photoshoot today?â Namjoon places the rose bouquet on the pick-up shelf.Â
You donât move to speak, just keep your eyes on Hoseok. He thumbs at the leaf of some plant you canât remember the name of (Namjoon would be so disappointed), and you swear his cheeks flush a light pink that matches the tint of his pouty lips.Â
âNot today,â his voice is always lilting, but it seems to lift even higher. âI was just in the area. Thought Iâd stop by.â His eyes lock with you and you find yourself suddenly very busy with organizing the little notecards that people write to accompany their bouquets.Â
âAlways good to see you, hyung,â Namjoon says with another smile. âIâve got a few of your favorites in stock.â With a toss of his head toward the new batch of plants, Namjoon goes behind the counter to take the notecards from your hands. You scowl at him when he bumps his hip into you, jostling you against the counter.
Hoseok nods, his pretty eyes eventually leaving yours as he makes his way toward the plants Namjoon pointed out. Thereâs something so elegant about the way he moves. Not just elegant, but confident and poised. He holds his head high and his shoulders straight, yet somehow relaxed. Itâs an easy confidence; somehow, you can tell it takes no effort at all to move through life with such grace. And his smile? Fucking forget about it. You canât even handle looking at his side profile when he smiles down at the houseplants. Itâs so bright, so cheerful. All teeth and full, pink lips. Never have you wanted to be a philodendron in your life, yet here you are, wishing you could turn green and photosynthesize.Â
âEarth to Y/N,â Namjoon teases, causing you to startle.Â
âFuck off.â The curse doesnât land the way you want it to, but you still have your eyes on the modelâs lean body weaving through the plants.Â
He does this every Thursday, usually around mid-morning, when the early customers rushing to get the plants for the day have managed to make it to wherever it was they were going. Heâll wander, as he does now, caressing leaves and petals with his index finger and thumb, rubbing at the silky plants until his fingertips turn green. You always wonder where he lives, if he has a giant mansion filled to the brim with plants. Exotic ones, common houseplants, flowers - maybe even ones heâs strung up from the ceiling in macrame plant hangers.Â
Except he never buys anything.Â
Well.Â
He buys one thing.Â
âHow about you go check on our customer? See if he needs anything.â Namjoon raises an eyebrow at you and heâs using that voice you like to snort at, the one he uses when heâs trying to assert that he is, in fact, the boss here.Â
This isnât about him asserting his authority, though, and you both know it.Â
With a sigh, you straighten your apron and shuffle into the jungle. Hoseok is crouched down to examine a small monstera deliciosa. Itâs a baby, soon ready to shoot up even taller than you.Â
âDid you know the monstera deliciosa is also called the Swiss cheese plant? Probably because of the holes⊠in the⊠in the leavesâŠâ You rush out the dumb fact, quickly losing steam as your eyes fall on the bright grin blooming on Hoseokâs face.Â
âI did not, actually.â He stands, delicate hands tucked into the pockets of his slacks. The outfit really shouldnât look good on anyone, but he manages to pull it off. When he leans slightly his shirt rides up, briefly exposing the thick band of his briefs poking out from his pants. A bit of his tummy appears, too, a few light hairs trailing from his belly button into his-
âI, um,â you tear your gaze from him, chastising yourself for being such a creep. âI got a lot of useless shit up here.â You tap your temple and opt for a self-deprecating joke to mask your embarrassment.Â
âDoesnât seem useless to me, Y/N,â Hoseok muses, but he doesnât provide a reason for it to not be.Â
âDo you, um, need anything?âÂ
The smile never fades - maybe even grows brighter? - as Hoseok shakes his head ânoâ.Â
You nod in acknowledgment and quickly turn on your heel to march straight back to the counter. Itâs safe behind the counter. The counter gives you space between yourself and the customer with the disarmingly kind smile and the cute tummy and the eyes that bore into your soul like they can see something you canât.Â
After a few minutes, said customer returns to the front of the store, his purchase in hand. You knew it would be this; itâs always this. Every Thursday, itâs this.Â
You feel your stomach flutter as Hoseok turns to the counter.Â
âFind what you need?â Namjoon manages to appear at all the right times, you think to yourself.Â
âYup.â The âpâ pops again, and Hoseok doesnât take his eyes off you. Youâre dusting off a few display vases, so Namjoon heads to the register to take Hoseokâs credit card.Â
âWant this wrapped up?â Namjoon asks, but the three of you already know the answer.Â
âNo, thank you.â Â
Namjoon nods and quickly steps past you to work on a new bouquet order.Â
The store phone starts ringing, but youâre frozen in place as Hoseok leans against the counter.Â
âI hope you have a good day, Y/N,â he says softly. The smile he wears feels gentler and more⊠intimate as he sets his new purchase on the counter in front of you. With another smile and a wrinkle of his nose, the man sticks his hands in his pockets and slips out the door.Â
You pick up the flower with slow movements, as though youâre afraid of how fragile it is, and bring it to your nose. Itâs sweet; itâs always sweet.Â
âLove and longing.âÂ
You nearly drop the flower and Namjoon lets out a breathy laugh.Â
âWhat the fuck, Joon.â You try to calm your heart, but thereâs a thunderstorm of feelings in your chest.Â
He taps on the flower chart as if you donât already know what a bouquet of pink camellias means. As if you donât spend your days tracing the same image until itâs got a groove in the worn cardstock.Â
âItâs cute. Just wish you'd both stop dancing around each other and actually do something.âÂ
You glare at him even though you agree, but you're scared to admit it. You can't imagine admitting how flustered the model who has made it a habit of gifting you a single pink camellia every Thursday morning makes you.Â
But everyone knows without you having to admit anything at all.Â

âThis is so weird.â
Namjoon looks over at you, his cheeks bulging like a hamster around a buttered dinner roll. Yoongi hadnât been thrilled with their existence. Heâd stressed the importance of serving authentic Korean food, said his grandparents would throw a fit if not, but thatâd thrown the resort into chaos, so Hoseok had to step in, smooth out the wrinkles, tell them the five-star menu looked great, thank you so muchâ
âWhat is?â
âThat,â you say. At the end of your pointer finger are Yoongi and Hoseok, heads knocked together as they speak in a code only they understand. Hoseokâs laughter rings out, prompting a gummy smile from Yoongi. Beside you, Namjoon sighsâa breathy, lovestruck sort of sound. âI canât believe theyâre married.â
Namjoon mirrors Yoongiâs smile. Looks at his two best friends like they hung the stars in the sky. Like theyâre relationship goals, or whatever the kids are saying nowadays. âTheyâre perfect together.â
A choked sort of sound escapes you, prompting a sharp glare from Namjoon. âDonât look at me like that,â you scold him, handing over another roll on a tiny, fancy dish.
Taehyung frowns, reaching for it back. âHey! I was gonnaââ
âNo, you werenât.â You slide it closer to Namjoon, not wanting to risk another lecture on your romance-based cynicism. Over the years youâve heard them all, and the thought of enduring anotherâespecially at Yoongi and Hoseokâs fucking weddingânearly has you retching in your seat.
Becauseâokay, you can see where Namjoonâs coming from. Where heâs all flowers on the first date and proper courting methods and you donât have to let me know you got home safe because Iâm going to walk you there myself, youâre more⊠well, none of that. Dating app hookups, horror stories told over brunch about the guy youâd taken home from the bar who didnât even bother to go down on you before trying to stick it in, months-long situationships that are more like a flashbang than any kind of real relationship.
Namjoon says youâll have more luck if youâre more receptive. You say he needs to stop taking dating advice from Disney movies.
You sigh. Yoongi and Hoseok are cute. They spark a little bit of hope in your chest, a little bit of longing, but you swallow it down along with the rest of your drink. Something fruity and disgusting Jimin had handed you, claiming Taehyung didnât want it because all the sugar would give him a migraine. Something definitely not strong enough if you have any hopes of lasting until the first dance.
âIâm going to the bar,â you announce. âAnyone want anything?â
Jimin and Taehyung immediately pipe up with their orders. Seokjin and Jeongguk donât pay you any attention at all, too busy ripping off pieces of bread and rolling them into tiny balls, trying to toss them into each otherâs mouths from across the table. Namjoon watches them, jaw slack with horror, and immediately announces heâs coming with you.
You immediately forget what youâre supposed to order the kids so you just order two more fruity things and something strong for yourself. Something from the top shelf thatâll burn as it goes down. Namjoon orders something boring your grandfather would drink and looks very pleased as he mixes it around with a little cocktail straw, ice clanking against the glass as itâs twirled around.
Itâs at this exact moment that you realize, not for the first time, how attractive he is. How devastating his dimpled cheeks areâall the time, but especially when he smiles. How golden his skin looks under the amber lighting of this fancy hotel ballroom. How his eyes seem to twinkle when he looks at his two best friends so overwhelmed by love and happiness and the pure joy that accompanies a lifelong promise to love someone forever.
And thisâthis simply will not do, so you order another drink. Something stronger than the last one, which had been infinitely stronger than the first.
Namjoon doesnât notice, too busy pointing out people youâd supposedly gone to school with that you wouldnât be able to name with a gun to your head. He smiles at each one, whispering their names to you before they approach to say hello and youâre put in an awkward situation. But Namjoonâs just like that. Remembers all these little details about everyoneânot because he has some crazy strong memory, but because he genuinely cares enough to learn.
Itâs horribly endearing.
It makes your stomach hurt.
Because this is not the first time youâve looked at Kim Namjoon and felt the world tilt. Sometimes you look at Kim Namjoon and youâre overcome with such fondness it feels like itâll come spilling out of your ears. Sometimes you look at Kim Namjoon and you start to believe all those ridiculous poems he makes you read about destiny and love and soulmates. But sometimes you look at Kim Namjoon and you want to cry, because Kim Namjoon doesnât look at you the same way.
Time for another drink.
Four turns into five turns into too many. By the time you return to your table, everyone else is gone, taking up space on the dance floor or mingling at other tables like socially well-adjusted adults do. Yoongi and Hoseok are making rounds of their own in between making heart eyes at each other and stealing little kisses that make everyone coo. Which is fine. Youâre beyond buzzed, well on your way to full-on wasted, and seeing Yoongi and Hoseok kiss doesnât fill you with existential dread the way it normally does.
Namjoon would be proud, you think. Maybe the secret to being more receptive to love had been at the bottom of a bottle the entire time.
A displeased scoff pulls you back into the moment. Namjoonâs beside you again, frowning at the empty bread basket. âIâm going to murder Jeongguk and Seokjin.â
âWhy?â you ask, despite thinking itâs not a bad idea regardless of the reason.
Namjoon tilts the basket in your direction. âIâm fucking starving and thereâs only little bread balls left.â Pure agony flashes across his face. âIâm fucking wasted, too. Drank too much on an empty stomach. Hey, did you knowââ
As if by divine intervention, your stomach growls, too. âYeah,â you say, cutting off whatever fun fact Namjoon was about to share with you. Probably something gross about ruminants and camelids. âShit, Iâm hungry, too. Whenâs dinner supposed to be?â
âNo clue. Some fancy place like this, though? Probably late. Hobi said something about springing for the extended cocktail hour.â
You frown. âNot one person in a weird bow tie has offered me a bacon-wrapped scallop on a skewer or a tiny quiche. I feel ripped off.â
âIâm way too drunk to eat a quiche right now. Iâd probably throw up.â
A snort escapes you. âGood, because there arenât any.â You sigh, then, a wistful look on your face as you recall all the nights in university that you and Namjoon had gone to parties. Got too drunk and had to stumble back to your dorms, stopping every so often so he could groan and throw up in some poor bastardâs shrubbery. Sometimes youâd drink a lot but not too much and stumble into a McDonaldâs instead, order way too much food, and eat it on a curb in the parking lot.
âOh my god.â You moan in a way thatâs not appropriate for a wedding reception. Namjoon chokes on a bread ball. âYou know what I just thought about?â
âMcDonaldâs? Because thatâs what Iâm thinking about.â
Chicken nuggets dance at the edge of your vision. Greasy, soggy fries call to you like a siren song. You can feel the burn of that demonic Sprite in the hinges of your jaw, your lips puckering in anticipation. âYeah,â you reply, tone a little dazed. âFuck, Iâm so fucking hungry.â
Namjoon looks around the room. Takes note of where everyone is, what theyâre doing, how long itâll take before theyâre done doing it. âWe couldnât,â he says, but the wistful look in his eyes gives him away. âWe shouldnât.â A pause. âWe shouldnât?â
No, you probably shouldnât. âNo, we probably shouldnât,â you agree, âbut I know from experience we can bribe Taehyung to cover for us if we bring him back a McFlurry. And, really, if you think about it, Yoongi and Hobi canât even be mad because who lets their wedding guests starve.â
Namjoon clicks his tongue. âThatâs a good point.â
âYou say that as if I donât always have good points,â you quip, almost offended at the insinuation.
âYou donât.â
Itâs full-blown offense, now. âExcuse you. What the hell does that mean?â
Namjoon looks ready to fight to the death over this, a PowerPoint presentation full of bulleted lists practically shining behind those eyes of his, but then his stomach rumbles embarrassingly loud and he flushes. âDo you wannaâŠ?â
Those goddamn chicken nuggets are calling to you again. âYeah,â you decide, no hesitation as you stand and hold your hand out to him. Well, you try to stand. All those drinks youâd thrown back are hitting you at once and you teeter a little on your feet, your hand missing Namjoonâs the first four times he tries to grab it. âLetâs go,â you say once thereâs finally contact. Namjoonâs hand is warm, steadying.
You pluck a flute of champagne off the tray of a passing waiter, unable to cope.
For some reason, Namjoon does the same.
***
âI always told you Iâd take you to dinner in Paris.â
You snort, choking on a piece of chicken nugget. The replica Eiffel Tower gleams behind you as you both sit on the sidewalk, too drunk to care about ruining your expensive clothes. âNot once have you ever said that.â
Namjoon frowns, looking far too serious for a discussion like this. âI definitely have.â Looking over at him, you shake your head as you fight off a smile. Namjoon has never told you heâd take you to dinner in Paris. Thatâs not something youâd forget. âWell, Iâve definitely thought about it, then.â
âI donât think that counts,â you say, shoving a handful of fries in your mouth. Your lips are greasy when you smack them together, the salt making them burn a little. âWhat good does it do me if you just think about it and never do it.â
The words seem to strike a chord with him. He looks over at you, gaze sharp and stone cold sober. Not like heâs seeing you for the first time, butâthereâs definitely something there. Something new.
You think he might say something. Feels like the time and place for a confession. Namjoonâs definitely antsy like heâs talking himself up to deliver one, but he just snaps his jaw shut each time he opens it. Shoves more food in his mouth each time you think he might finally do it. Then heâs reaching into his coat pocket to pull out two tiny bottles of liquor heâd nicked from the mini bar in his hotel room.
He offers you one and you take it, unable to wipe the disappointment off your face.
***
The inside of your mouth tastes like battery acid.
Not to mention the throbbing in your skull, the way your entire body protests as soon as you open your eyes to golden sunlight. Your brain seems to be protesting most of all, seemingly taking the day off from recalling everything that happened once you and Namjoon had left the reception the night before. Fast food seems to have been involved, judging from the way your stomach roils, but thereâs only a Windows shutdown screen beyond that.
âWow, I feel like shit.â
You startle, barely resisting the urge to scream. Whether itâs out of fear or the overwhelming sense of disappointment that youâd taken someone back to your room that was almost certainly subpar, youâre not sure. Youâre far too hungover to deal with the awkward this was great, but I have places to be talk.
But that voiceâyouâd know that voice anywhere, and that overwhelming sense of disappointment turns into an overwhelming sense of dread. Having sex with Namjoon has always been at the very top of your list of No Good, Very Bad Ideas. A logistical nightmare, if youâre being honest and completely putting aside the two billion daydreams youâve had about how itâd feel to get railed by your best friend. Not to mention youâd done it drunk, because now you know how it feels to get railed by your best friend and you canât even remember.
You swallow, trying desperately to keep the nausea at bay. Youâre never eating McDonaldâs again. âUm. Didâdid weâŠ?â
Namjoonâs silent only as long as it takes for him to take stock of the situation. The gears are clearly whirring in that giant brain of his, and if you didnât feel like your entire world was falling apart, youâd spare a moment to appreciate how fucking hot he looks when heâs thinking. âI donâtââ He takes a peek beneath the duvet and immediately looks less green. âWell, Iâm still wearing my suit pants, so I donâtâI donât think we did.â
âOh.â You take a peek, too. âI'm still in my dress.â
Namjoon nods. âThatâs⊠thatâs good, right?â
âYeah. Yes.â
âDo you remember anything after we left the reception?â
You stay planted on your back, refusing to meet his eye. The ceiling is nice. A great ceiling. Has probably seen lots of debauchery. âI vaguely recall choking on a chicken nugget.â
âOkay. Thatâsâitâs a start.â
âYeah. Do you?â Namjoon shakes his head. âOkay. Well, I guessâmaybe we just ate McDonaldâs and went back to the reception?â
Namjoon nods again, but itâs very weak and not at all convincing. âYeah, maybe. Heyâmaybe we can try, uh, checking our phones? We promised Tae a McFlurry. He definitely wouldâve thrown a fit if we forgot.â
âGood point.â
You can see Namjoon smile in your peripheral vision. âYou say that as if I donât always have good points,â he teases gently, parroting your words from the night before.
Despite the clusterfuck in which youâve found yourselves, you smile, too.
And itâs immediately wiped off your face once you grab your phone and take a look at your lock screen.
Because there, set as your wallpaper, right below the time and the onslaught of text messages asking where you were, is a picture of you and Namjoon, clearly taken the night before.
Because youâre in your dressâthe expensive one Jimin has insisted on, and thank god he did because you look incredibleâand Namjoonâs in his suit.
Because thereâs a man youâve never seen before standing in between you, smiling at you both.
Because heâs dressed like Elvis.
Because you and Namjoon are kissing, each of you holding up one side of a sign that says JUST MARRIED!
âOh no,â Namjoon wails. âOh no, oh fuck, please noââ
You want to say something, maybe give him some kind of reassurance or comfort, but you canât stop staring. Your life is in shambles and all you can think about is how good you look together. How it mustâve felt to finally kiss him, if those plush lips felt as good as youâve concluded they must.
Namjoon holds his left hand in front of him. Itâs shaking horribly, but not badly enough to obscure the thin gold band on his ring finger. âPlease tell me we didnâtâŠâ He takes in a deep breath, tries not to hyperventilate. âOh my god. Oh my fucking god.â
He reaches for your hand, then. Finds it beneath the comforter and holds it up, face crumpling immediately as he sees a matching ring on your finger.
And itâs not really the point, all things considered, but Namjoonâs reaction makes you want to cry. Of course he doesnât want to be married to you, but the obvious and enthusiastic rejection still stings. Youâre not sure what other response you expected, but this oneâs about as bad as it can get.
You roll onto your side. Pretend to be rifling through your things so Namjoon doesnât see the swell of tears on your lash line. âI, um. Iâm sure it wo-wonât be hard to get it annulled.â You thumb away the wetness beneath your eyes. âIâm sure thereâs a million places. Weâreâweâre not the first people to get drunk and wake up married, you know?â
Namjoon hears the thickness in your voice. Thereâs no way he doesnât, because you can hear it too and itâs impossible to hide. And he just sighs, places his hand cautiously on the swell of your hip. âIâm sorry,â he says, and youâre not sure heâs ever sounded so small. âI shouldnât haveâŠâ He trails off, clearly unsure what heâs apologizing for.
âYeah. Itâsâitâs fine. Maybe we should just⊠take some time. Come up with a plan. We can reconvene in a few hours once weâre thinking more clearly.â
Namjoon just nods. He doesnât say another word as you gather your things and slink down the hall to your own room.
***
âYou did WHAT?â
Sighing, you pinch the bridge of your nose and tell yourself not to cry. Youâd done enough of that in the shower. Over all four cups of coffee, too. âDonâtâplease donât yell at me.â
âWhy not?â Hoseok huffs on the other end of the phone. You can hear Yoongi asking stupid questions in the background.
âBecause,â you argue weakly. âIâI just feel stupid, okay? You know Iâve had feelings for Namjoon forever, and maybe something couldâve come from that, once upon a time, but we just fucked up so bad thereâs no coming back from it.â A shaky exhale.âHeâs probably never going to speak to me again, so not only do I have to mourn a relationship that never was and never will be, Iâm also going to lose my best friend. And get a divorce. All before noon.â
Hoseok scoffs. âFirst of all, Iâm your best friend, so that part is clearly untrue. And secondly, youâre not getting a divorce, youâre getting an annulment.â
Let no man say Jung Hoseok isnât comforting.
âWow, thanks a lot, Hobi. Youâre a real pal.â
He clicks his tongue. âWow yourself! Youâre the one who called me in a panic the day after my wedding! I was blissfully getting railed by my husbandââ
âOkay,â you sigh. âI get it. Iâm sorry, Iâll let you go.â
âHey, no, thatâsâI didnât mean it like that. Iâm sorry. I just⊠didnât expect this. Iâm sorry.â
âYou and me both.â
Hoseokâs tone is impossibly soft when he speaks again. âWhat are you gonna do?â
âWhat choice do we have? Weâll obviously get it annulled and pretend this never happened.â
He hesitates. âYeah, IâI guess thatâs the best idea, huh?â
Before you can answer, thereâs a knock on the door. You bid Hoseok a quick goodbye before you move to answer it, feet dragging the entire way. Youâre not surprised to see Namjoon, but that doesnât stop your hands from shaking. Doesnât mean the sight of him doesnât take your breath away.
âHi,â you say, trying to offer up a smile. âCome in.â
Youâre not sure what to do with all your nervous energy so you perch on the edge of the bed, run your sweaty hands up and down your thighs. Namjoon doesnât seem to be faring much better. Canât seem to leave his hair alone. Canât keep his eyes off the floor.
Finally he sighs, sits next to you on the bed. Not close enough to touch, but close enough for you to feel his body heat. âIâm going to ask you a question, and I want you to be honest with me, okay? And I mean honest-honest. Thereâs no wrong answer here.â
You gulp. âEr, okay.â
Namjoon gulps, too, Adamâs apple bobbing obviously in his throat. âDoyouhavefeelingsforme?â
You blink. âWhat.â
âDoyouhavefeelingsforme,â he repeats.
âJoonie, can you slow down? I canât understand a fucking thing youâre saying.â
He whimpers. Takes a deep breath. âDo. You. Have. Feelings. For me.â
Oh. Well, this certainly feels like a question that has a right or wrong answer. Feels like a question thatâll decide the fate of the universe, one that has an impossible amount of consequences.
âUh,â you respond eloquently.
Eyes still locked on the floor, Namjoon grabs your hand. You try to ignore the feeling of his wedding band against your skin. âHonest-honest, remember?â
Of course you remember, but how can you possibly put years of feelings into words? How can you justify being in love with your best friend for so long and never telling him despite there being no secrets between you? How can you tell the truth and be selfish enough to ask him to stay, to fix the mess the two of you have made? Because you can be honest, you can deal with the repercussions, but you canât stomach losing your best friend.
But, if nothing else, you can at least give him what heâs asking for.
âYes.â
Namjoon slumps. Releases a very fractured breath, and this is it, you think. This is the part where he lets you down with a kindness only Namjoon possesses. This is the part where he regrets to inform you he doesnât feel the same and extends a half-assed offer to still be friends because he feels obligated to.
Instead, this is the part where he says, âThank fuck,â and laughs at your dumbfounded expression. Then he moves in to kiss it off your face entirely, and yes, those plush, pillowy lips of his do feel just as good as youâve imagined. Better, even.
The two of you kiss for what feels like hours. He kisses you slowly and with intent. Kisses you until you feel all the love you have for him returned tenfold. Kisses you until youâre dizzy and drunk on him. Kisses you until youâre laughing until you cry that the first time the two of you are kissing is as husband and wife. Kisses you until you donât care about the consequences. Kisses you until heâs pulling away to sayâ
âMaybe itâs too soon to ask, but do you want to, maybe, like⊠stay married?â
And then youâre laughing again, tears staining your cheeks that Namjoon thumbs away even though he doesnât get it. Doesnât know why youâre laughing, if itâs at him or with him or at the situation.
âSorry,â you giggle, âitâs justâyouâre the first person to ever ask me that.â
Namjoonâs smile is large and infectious. Has his dimples displayed prominently. âOh, really?â He presses another kiss to your temple. âSo this isnât a habit of yours, getting drunk at weddings and waking up married?â
You press your no into his mouth. âJust this once.â
âAnd whatâs the verdict?â he asks, tone teasing but thereâs vulnerability beneath it. âNo wrong answer again. I know this is really backwards.â
You go quiet. âYouâd want to stay married? You, Kim Namjoon, the most traditional man on the face of the earth?â
He scoffs. âI am notââ
âMr. House in the Suburbs With a White Picket Fence?â
âCome onââ
âMr. Two Kids and a Dog? Mr. Five-Hundred Wedding Guests? Mr. One True Love? Mr. Wifeguyââ
Namjoon groans. âI want a divorce.â
âItâs an annulment, not a divorce.â
âThen I want that, too.â
You shriek with laughter, rolling onto your side to face him. Namjoon is gorgeous all the time, but heâs most gorgeous when heâs happy. That pure, untainted happiness you see on him now. âDo you really?â
âNo,â he answers, whisper-soft. âDo you?â
Maybe itâs the dumbest idea youâve ever had, or maybe itâs the smartest, but you press another no into his mouth.
