The stench in the air is some cross between smoke and rotting food. It’s enough to make your nose wrinkle in disgust, something you’ve done several times over the past twenty minutes since getting here, but Hongjoong is still sitting beside you and tinkering with his wristband in the same position he’s been in since arriving. A chain-link fence and a row of boxes are all that separate you from your target — the military complex in the Upper Echelon just as Jisung detailed to Hongjoong the day before. It’s closer to the thickest parts of the Smokehouses in the lower area, which is no doubt what’s causing the smell and, in turn, your misery.

“The outside security is a combination of motion sensors, cameras, and guards,” Hongjoong notes, not looking up from his forearm. “Keep monitoring the guards’ patterns for now while we wait. My techie here in Lynder is working on hacking their surveillance systems remotely.”

You are spared the further pleasure of having to deal with Jisung for the rest of the day, and in fact, he doesn’t return for a handful of days. Minho lingers, mostly on account of looking after you and your bum shoulder. Hyunwoo as well, of course, because it’s his home, and that Starscourge fellow you interacted with a bit in the past. Hyunwoo leaves you well enough alone. You can’t say that you mind all too much. There’s some gratitude for the fact that it’s only your shoulder that’s injured and not something like a leg because you aren’t bedridden or forced to stay inside because of the injury.

Warm water surrounds your body, leaving steam to billow up into all your senses until the warmth soothes your cold skin and aching muscles. You let yourself sink further into the sensation and dip your head under the water. Tingles rush from your scalp to your toes, and you exhale a deep sigh of relief under the surface. Bubbles follow your heave of air. Blinking in the water does little to nothing — it’s a dark green dredge underneath the surface and you can hardly see two inches in front of your face even with the light of the sun pouring across the pool. There’s no panic in your bones; rather, it’s an overwhelming sense of peace that secures itself in your body, even as a faded and distorted memory replays in your mind for what has to be the sixth time in an hour.

“Captain won’t hurt him.”

You don’t need to turn to see who has just stepped in, but you do nonetheless at least for the smallest semblance of confirmation. It doesn’t make it any easier to see who stands at the edge of the tunnel, bright light cascading around his tall form and casting crude shadows across the floor as he walks closer to the group. You swallow around nothing in anticipation although nothing could prepare you for what Mingi says next.

“Because I’m the one going in there, not Jongho.”

“Absolutely not!” Yunho blurts without a breath of hesitation, hand jerking down by his side in a fist clenched so tightly that his knuckles go white.

The black water at your feet is deeper than usual tonight. Less of a shallow lake and moreso a wide hole with a gaping maw that threatens to swallow you should you slip any further into its embrace. You keep yourself sequestered on the sand with knees tucked to your chest and chin resting softly between them. It’s been a bit lonely as well; Wooyoung hasn’t come to join you yet and Daichi has spared you of any further lectures for the time being. Thankfully, the former comes to spare you further solitude before the night begins to drag into something more depressing.

“Did you have a hard time falling asleep?” You blurt the inquiry without looking back over your shoulder, fully confident that the person approaching across the sand is Wooyoung. The hum you receive in response confirms that thought, then his body comes into view in your peripherals moments later. He sinks down to the sand beside you, mimicking your posture almost like a mirror with the way he props his chin on the top of one of his knees.

“A bit,” he says through a yawn, “but you made it easier.”

“Ahem, I hope I’m not interrupting?”

You jerk your chin up at the sound of the new voice entering San’s cramped clinic room, and your voice dies in the back of your throat when none other than Hyunjae enters. The book in your lap falls shut, page lost when your fingers don’t catch the place quickly enough.

“Ah, no, you’re not interrupting anything!” You speak through a smile as you slip off the edge of San’s bed, and the man’s hand escapes yours as you move. “Sorry, I found this book on your shelf and borrowed it, I hope you don’t mind.”

“Not at all, please feel free to peruse the books as you see fit! I just came to let you know that Nightingale won’t be here for another two or three hours. I know I said he was on his way, but apparently, he got a surprise lead he had to go after right away. He said he’ll come straight here after he’s done though.” The doctor drags a hand through his neatly parted locks, mussing the way it sits around his forehead. “I’m sorry for not having much for either of you to do in the meantime.”
