Warm water surrounds your body, leaving steam to billow up into all your senses until the warmth soothes your cold skin and aching muscles. You let yourself sink further into the sensation and dip your head under the water. Tingles rush from your scalp to your toes, and you exhale a deep sigh of relief under the surface. Bubbles follow your heave of air. Blinking in the water does little to nothing — it’s a dark green dredge underneath the surface and you can hardly see two inches in front of your face even with the light of the sun pouring across the pool. There’s no panic in your bones; rather, it’s an overwhelming sense of peace that secures itself in your body, even as a faded and distorted memory replays in your mind for what has to be the sixth time in an hour.

Stepping onto the bridge with Wooyoung in tow is an experience to say the very least. Mostly because it is eerily quiet when you arrive, so startlingly empty that you pause the second you step into the room. Hongjoong sits still as a statue in his usual place even though he has truly no need to be in the captain’s chair since you aren’t going anywhere quite yet. The only movements he makes are to cross one leg over the other back and forth every few seconds like he can’t stay put for too long. Other than that, he makes no effort to acknowledge your presence at the edge of the bridge, which would be expected if not for the crucial nature of your mission.

The stench in the air is some cross between smoke and rotting food. It’s enough to make your nose wrinkle in disgust, something you’ve done several times over the past twenty minutes since getting here, but Hongjoong is still sitting beside you and tinkering with his wristband in the same position he’s been in since arriving. A chain-link fence and a row of boxes are all that separate you from your target — the military complex in the Upper Echelon just as Jisung detailed to Hongjoong the day before. It’s closer to the thickest parts of the Smokehouses in the lower area, which is no doubt what’s causing the smell and, in turn, your misery.

“The outside security is a combination of motion sensors, cameras, and guards,” Hongjoong notes, not looking up from his forearm. “Keep monitoring the guards’ patterns for now while we wait. My techie here in Lynder is working on hacking their surveillance systems remotely.”

“Captain won’t hurt him.”

You don’t need to turn to see who has just stepped in, but you do nonetheless at least for the smallest semblance of confirmation. It doesn’t make it any easier to see who stands at the edge of the tunnel, bright light cascading around his tall form and casting crude shadows across the floor as he walks closer to the group. You swallow around nothing in anticipation although nothing could prepare you for what Mingi says next.

“Because I’m the one going in there, not Jongho.”

“Absolutely not!” Yunho blurts without a breath of hesitation, hand jerking down by his side in a fist clenched so tightly that his knuckles go white.

“What is the meaning of this exactly?” Your tone is sharp, eyes glancing over his that glow blue back at you. The gleam reminds you a bit of Nightingale, artificial and unnatural to an unnerving degree. It already puts you at a significant disadvantage to go up against someone who has a cybernetic enhancement. If it came down to it, could you trust yourself to use your Siren abilities? Air hisses through your teeth as you scoff quietly. The man ahead of you shifts his weight from one foot to the other. None of his movements can be trusted at this point, not with the hefty weight of his threat hanging over your head. You push back against the dirt and conceal Jisung’s body behind you as best you can.

“It means we’re going to take a walk, Ghost.” His chin drops as he speaks, and the glint in his eyes turns dangerous. He’s a Spectre surely; that would make the most sense for someone of his caliber, and he already disposed of a Berserker in the form of Atticus at some point with seemingly no trouble at all. Surely that means if there were to be a fight, Jisung would help you but the guarantee isn’t quite strong enough for you to put your faith in the man. “I suggest you cooperate.”

There’s not much to say upon returning to the ship. Hongjoong opts not to say anything to the man at his side, leaving Yeosang to head off in the opposite direction where he no doubt intends to find Wooyoung, and the captain cannot blame him in the slightest. As far as jobs go, this was a rough one, and it was equally rough on Hongjoong’s body as well. His feet ache from the heeled boots strapped to his ankles, his back burns from the strain of having to stand up so straight for so long, and god damn the corset laced around his midsection has overstayed its welcome by several hours.
