Thank you so much for looking at my fanart!
I'm glad I did my best to draw themšš
One thing I worry about in society is how autistic people seem to be more at risk for getting in trouble for things they didnāt even do all because of not understanding the situation in the first place
For example: I remember one time I was shopping at a supermarket, and after paying, a staff member walked up to me, and without explaining why, asked me if they could look inside my bag. I was only aware they suspected me of shoplifting (which I hadnāt) because of a previous post Iād read about another autistic in a similar situation. Imagine if an autistic person, unaware of the hidden context, declined to let them look inside the bag. Theyād already be deemed as suspicious when in reality, they just didnāt want someone to look inside
Another time I was about to go to a university party organised by the university itself. I was carrying an empty Coca-Cola bottle ONLY because I was drinking one beforehand, and couldnāt find a bin. Without warning, a staff member grabbed my empty bottle and took it away. At first I thought they were just being helpful until I saw the stern look on their face, and then I was confused (only later did I realise they might have thought I would refill it with alcohol later on or something). When I was unable to get in due to not having enough money, I had a shutdown due to the noise and confusion, and was then screamed at to get out despite the fact I did nothing wrong
This is the kind of thing autistic people have to deal with. Society has to learn to understand that just because a person isnāt reacting the way you expect, and seemsĀ āsuspiciousā, doesnāt mean they are. Thereās a high chance theyāre an autistic person who may not be fully understanding of the situation at hand, especially when the other person isnāt explicit about whatās going on
In case anyone wants some perspective on how utterly random triggers can be. I havenāt lived in a house with a garage door in four-ish years. Right now at this moment, I honestly canāt recall what they sound like, except something metallic moving and rather clanky.
There was one on tv. I wasnāt even paying attention to it, I had my headphones on and was actively trying to tune the show out. My ears picked up on the sound of the garage door, and a jolt of adrenaline shot through my body as I grabbed my laptop and moved to get out of my seat and run to my room.
I realized what happened after about two seconds.
The sound is gone from my ears, but my heart is still racing and Iām waiting for the door to the house to open, to hear the jingling of my motherās keys and her footsteps moving through the house. My muscles are still tense and Iām fighting the urge to run to my room and stick a board in front of the door.
For years, the sound of a garage door was my warning to pack up what I was doing quickly and retreat to my room if I was out of it.
I canāt remember the sound of the garage door right now, but I canāt tell my brain to stop trying to react to it.
