There Was A Common Refrain After Germanys 2-1 Defeat: That They Had Paid The Price For Being Too Distracted

Germany’s protest will reverberate down the years and generations
Even if Hansi Flick’s side go out in the World Cup group stage after the 2-1 defeat by Japan, some things just matter more

There was a common refrain after Germany’s 2-1 defeat: that they had paid the price for being too distracted by daring to stick up for human rights. As one Qatari reporter’s account, liked more than 200,000 times on social media, put it: “This is what happens when you don’t focus on football.”

The "analysis" is totally nonsense. European leagues have shown support for anti-racism, which is one of the human rights issues. Premier League clubs offer support to Rainbow Laces campaign. Many strongest teams are in Europe. However, even a strong team like FC Bayern Munich sometimes lost the game. 8 out of 26 players on Japan's national team belong to teams in the Bundesliga. Japan’s victory would be a surprise, but not a miracle.

Let us make a prediction. That photograph of the German players with their hands over their mouths will, like the one of the Iran team who bowed their heads when their anthem played against England, reverberate down the years and the generations. Even if they go out of this World Cup in the first round. Some things just matter more.

Football is the most popular sport. National team players are influential. German players are very aware of that. It also means they try to take responsibility for what football is and how football should be.

Japan's victory cheered me up! Bravo to Germany, too.
