House vs. Home
“For the love of- Inuyasha! I need to go back to my house! My mom is probably worried sick by now! And if you want your ramen, please, LET GO OF MY SHIRT!”
Inuyasha snarled at her from his crouched position below her. Reluctantly he let go of the corner of her shirt, allowing her to stand.
“Keh. Fine, wench, but I’m coming with you.” He stood, towering over her with his height but she was not intimidated by his stature. The girl merely rolled her eyes and grabbed her underweight yellow bag.
“At this point, I’m not even going to try and argue with you anymore. Let’s go.”
He trailed behind her, chin tilted slightly, pleased that he (in his mind anyway) had won their little squabble.
Kagome raised her hand over her head, waving a goodbye to her friends and yelling over to them that they were leaving and would be back soon. They smiled and told her to be careful as always. Together they walked down the work path past the God Tree and to the well.
Grabbing her round the waist, Inuyasha hopped over the lip of the well and they both were surrounded by the familiar warmth and blue lights that accompanied their time travel.
Still holding her tight to him, Inuyasha leaped out of the well and threw the door to the well house open. They were greeted by the harsh summer sun and Souta who had nearly had nailed his older sister in the head with his soccer ball. He smiled apologetically as Inuyasha caught it just inches from her face and tossed it back at the boy, sliding him a stern look as the hanyou and miko walked to the house. Sliding open the front door and kicking off her shoes, Kagome’s mother peeked into the entrance way. Giving them both a kind smile and her daughter a hug. The smell of dinner cooking over the stove more than guaranteed that the two would be staying longer than originally anticipated, though it wasn’t such a surprise to anyway. Inuyasha of course made a show of being displeased with the long stay but everyone knew his front by now and knew he probably really wanted to stay for dinner. Who could resist Mrs. Higurashi’s cooking? Certainly not him.
After a long (and I mean long) speech from Kagome’s grandfather about the rice they were having and how Kagome ought to be careful “messing around” (both of Inuyasha and Kagome’s faces had lit up like Christmas trees to say the least) over the dinner table, everyone quickly finished their meals before they choked on it going down. Kagome helped her mother clear the table and wash dishes while catching up and saying things they thought Inuyasha couldn’t hear and Souta tried for the umpteenth time to explain video games to his hanyou hero while said hero was trying very hard to listen to the girls’ conversation without getting caught by them (though Gramps couldn’t help but notice how the young boy’s dog ears swiveled in the direction of the kitchen and his eyes flicker in that direction.)
Soon everyone had started to settle down causing Kagome to retreat to her bedroom to “study”, Inuyasha following her up the stairs and leaning against the wall behind her bed, trying not to cause any trouble and not distract her.
“You said house.” Well, it wouldn’t have lasted anyhow. Kagome quickly glanced over at him from the corner of her eye with a confused look before turning back to her homework.
“What do you mean?”
“Before. When we were ‘bout to leave. You said wanted to go back to the house.”
“Yah. I guess I did. Why are you asking about it?” She frowned as she saw him shift uncomfortably.
“Well, why didn’t you say home? They both mean the same thing, right?” Her frown deepened and her chair swiveled around so she could face him.
“Uh, no not exactly.” This time he frowned and she giggled at his cute expression.
“What’da ya mean ‘no’. What’s the difference?”
“Well, if you want to be technical about it, they’re synonyms, which means they can be interchange about, used in the same context, but that doesn’t mean they’re exactly the same. A lot of people use house to mean home though. I like to think of it differently than that.”
“How?” She sighed dreamily and rested her cheek in her palm, leaning her elbow on her knee.
“A house, to me, is a building. A dwelling in which you live, where anyone can live. Any of these building on this street are houses. A home is special, though. A home doesn’t have to be a building. It can be anything really. A plant, an animal, a building, or even a person. It’s where you feel safe and there’s just a sort of special feeling that when you’re feeling down you just wanna go there and everything will be alright, even if it won’t be. It’s the one place that’s all for you.” She smiled brightly and spun back around. He blinked several times, left in a daze by her explanation, then he frowned again.
“Where’s yours? Your home I mean. You said this was your house.” She had called this her home before though. Something had changed.
“That was before I met you. My definition changed. You’re my home, Inuyasha.” His heart stopped for a moment before it started to pound furiously in his chest. He was scared she would be able to hear it.
Keh. Guess that makes you mine, wench.

For a while now, I’ve wanted to do something to show off how diverse school uniforms can get in animes. For the sake of the project, I tried to pull from shows from various eras, genres (though it hardly reaches outside of “slice of life” if a school uniform is involved), and well-known as well as a few more obscure ones. I had a lot of fun working on this and I hope everyone enjoys it!
