He sfjckinh newly 13 and be had to dea wigh this shit. That's zmth a lot of people don't seem to realize, how old Ed is throughout the series amx what shit he had to go through.

His dad abandoned him and his brother, his mom died, he had to raise Al himself basically, he went through the trauma of literally watching his brother fade from existence (at least on a physical level), he lost two limbs, he had to go through one of the more evasive anx painful surgeries there was, he joined the military, he ended up getting kidnapped and nearly murdered (along with Winry), he basically helped tucker make Nina as a chimera, he dealt with getting poisoned, stabbed a few times, shot at, watching a guy's brains go explode on the pavement, having his automail forcibly disconnected from his nerves a few times, he had his arm blown up while it was still connected to him, he was threatened with either himself dying or both he and his brother, he nearly killed a whole group of people as means of creating a philosopher's stone, he had been hunted by the homunculi and probably regular people too; And this is only some of the shit! It's not even all of it!

That boy has been through hell and back, he's got a lot of trauma and then some.

Remember, he is just a child. (In fmab, leading up to the Promised Day, he's only 15-16. In 03, ep 51, he's 15. Even still, in COS he's only 18, just barely an adult!) A severely traumatized child at that.

But fr though that does make a lot of sense, and can make even more sense of why he reacts violently; Because that term of endearment was strictly used by his mom and only his mom. (Maybe Hoenhiem too but I think he'd break Hoenhiem's jaw if he called him lil man or anything of the sort.)

I can say it's the same for 03 bc Trisha had been seen calling him her "lil man" like a few times; Sloth even went as far as to use the term, which made him freeze up and then react violently.

So it's safe to assume that it definitely stems from there, and in 03 the joke bantering between Pinako and Ed about height is stated as simply that, a joke, so that could also be a reason! That his height is played into as a joke by those he cares about and therefore his typical reaction is to delve into playful banter; He only reacts violently when it comes to strangers or people he doesn't trust/dislikes, so like with Roy he reacts violently. At least initially, I can't say that (over the years of working with the man) he hadn't at least made it feel more playful than downright mocking. But I digress.

I can get it myself, to a varying degree honestly, but I can't really put it into words.

I'm rewatching fmab and I think I've realized something. It's possible I'm overthinking it, so if I am, oh well.

In episode 12 One Is All, All Is One, there is a flashback scene where Ed remembers the scene where his father left. In the scene, his mom calls him "little man." I'm wondering if part of the reason Ed has a huge complex about being called "little" or "short" or things like that is because his mom would use it as a term of endearment for him and for Ed that is still only reserved for his mom. It's probably nothing, but I think it's an interesting thought.
