Ed is surprised when discovering Lan Fan's gender due to the obligatory "wow, this badass masked fighter is a woman!" cliche that exists less to serve a narrative purpose, and more to subvert the reader's sexist expectations (the target audience being Japanese teenage boys in the 2000's, you understand). But it's still funny within the context of FMA because a few moments before breaking Lan Fan's mask Ed was saying, "You're not better than my teacher," who we know to be a woman, by the way, and possibly the best martial artist in the entire series, so his surprise as the punchline of this trope is incredibly out of place lmao, like, "how shocking that a girl can fight this good?! (Izumi Curtis notwithstanding, I guess.)"
