On The Female Characters In The Movie
On the female characters in the movie
Not only is the movie racist, it also messed up such amazing female characters.
- Book!Miss P: is old but wise, conservative but sweet and caring, strong willed, emotional but manages to stay clear headed - Movie!Miss P: is young, pretty and charismatic, which is a trope I like but not for this character; I have a feeling she’s going to be flirtatious and out-going and that’s just not Miss P. - Book!Emma: is really emotional although she doesn’t show it, feels everything but tries to hide it so it doesn’t cloud her decisions, angry and assertive, doesn’t change when she gets together with Jacob - Movie!Emma: this makes me the most angry. See, I like the sweet, dreamy girl types like Luna Lovegood. But I could relate so much to Emma in the books - she feels everything at once, she cares and she gets angry and makes irrational decisions and I loved her for that. And they just took that away. - Book!Bronwyn: completely obliterates the “butch, strong female who is mean to everybody” trope and is instead this sweet, caring big sister who carries around her siblings on her shoulders and gives them good night kisses. - Movie!Bronwyn: is just a little girl? The opportunity to make her a big sister figure has been taken away entirely. Now, she’s just cute. - Book!Olive: brave, assertive even for her age, willing to do anything for her friends, doesn’t give up hope, loves her family unconditionally. - Movie!Olive: seems to be aged up only to be the love interest for Enoch, which just wasn’t necessary (because they had 0 interactions in the book and Hugh and Fiona exist too). I have the ugly feeling that she will stand in his shadow. - Book!Fiona: is definitely a girl of colour, has PTSD but still was a sweet and lovable character, deserved a better ending of her character arc but still - Movie!Fiona: is seemingly neurotypical, a little white girl without further backstory and cute braids - Claire hasn’t changed, really, so I’m not going to elaborate on her.
The movie took these characters from the book and changed them in such ways that a big part of who they were supposed to be disappeared. Now they’re just pretty and cute.

swan queen + first and last words
Rest in peace Jacob Portman.
Rest in peace Emma Bloom. Rest in peace Olive. Rest in peace Miss Peregrine. Rest in peace to the (personally) best book ever, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. You were funny, and unique, and great in so many ways the world never saw before. You were the perfect balance of fantasy and reality, free and grounded; and you managed to pull off a story about magic and love and life in a way no one has ever been able to do.
After years of waiting for a movie, we all surely hoped that this would be your shot, your big premier, your shining moment. We anxiously and excitedly waited for the results of the trailer, expecting all the best things. When we heard the news, all those who knew you as I did were much affected. Some of us asked, “why you?” Others wept silent tears. Still others angrily demanded explanation.
To a reader who loved the book as much as I did, this is an outrage. To just change a few minor or medium details, or have a few wrong castings, would be acceptable. But to change two of the most important characters in every way shape and form, and to do it so to change the entire meaning of the story, and to do all of this to make it “look cooler” – you have lost every ounce of respect. This movie is NOT Miss Peregrine’s. It is but the same script as every other chiche magic/superpower/teen movie, with names from the original novel sloppily pasted on top.
If you have ever loved a book so much that you would get amnesia only to re-read it, and if you have ever had that loved book turned into an entirely different movie altogether, please repost this message, as a farewell and a warning.
Rest in peace, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children
Only if SWEN was canon... 😞 #vivalaswanqueen
