I heard someone on a podcast compare solo indie game developers to writers attempting to write the next great novel. I like that comparison because this truly is a a passion project and a massive undertaking. I started making my video game (currently untitled) in August of 2018 by scrapping all my previous progress on old projects that were going nowhere (!) and starting fresh.
I'm glad I made this chart to mark my progress by. Each biome is a different level or stage of the game. The biomes are split into "Side A" (Art, Music, Map, Activty, Confrontation, and Revise/Complete) and "Side B" (Art, Music, Map, Finite State Machine, Puzzle/Confrontation, and Revise/Complete). As you can see in the Graveyard Biome, I've completed the Side A portion and am now working on Side B.
People are always asking how my progress is coming along... So here you go! It feels like I'm working at a snail's pace... But I'm a team of only one person, and I only work on Monday-Friday from 9-5 in order to prevent burnout and to maintain a good life/work balance. Once 4 of the 8 biomes are complete, I'll start looking for playtesters locally. And once all 8 biomes are complete, I'm going to make a cowdfunding site and gear up to travel to video game conventions for marketing and playtesting!
